In this episode we’re treading on some very thin ice, way out of our usual comfort zones… talking very loosely about late 1980s British indie genre, Shoegaze.
After we stumble uncomfortably through a brief (and probably incorrect) history of what it was and how it came to be (try Wikipedia for something better), we haul ourselves onto the solid ground of fuzz pedals! Specifically EHX Big Muff-inspired fuzzes from four different manufacturers, plus a lovely old 1974 Sola Sound Tonebender for good measure.
Add plenty of reverb, a couple of offset guitars, turn it up and watch ’em go!

Shoegazing
Shoegazing (also known as shoegaze) is a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged from the United Kingdom in the late 1980s and reached peak popularity in the early 1990s. The style is typified by significant use of guitar distortion, feedback, obscured vocals and the blurring of component musical parts into indistinguishable "walls of sound". The term "shoegazing" was initially devised by the British music press as a gibe meant to ridicule the stage presence of a wave of groups who stood still during live performances in a detached, introspective, non-confrontational state, often with their heads down; the heavy use of effects pedals also contributed to the image of performers looking down at their feet during concerts. The term was often used contemporaneously with "dream pop."
A loose label given to the shoegazing scene and other affiliated bands in London in the early 1990s was The Scene That Celebrates Itself. In the early 1990s, shoegazing groups were pushed aside by the American grunge movement and early Britpop acts such as Suede, forcing the relatively unknown bands to break up or reinvent their style altogether. In the 2000s, there was renewed interest in the genre among "nu gaze" bands.

Wild Nothing
Wild Nothing is an American indie rock/dream pop band from Blacksburg, Virginia, formed in late 2009 by Jack Tatum. During live performances, Tatum is joined by additional musicians, currently Nathan Goodman (guitar), Jeff Haley (bass), Kevin Knight (keyboards) and Jeremiah Johnson (drums).
To date, Wild Nothing has released two studio albums, Gemini (2010) and Nocturne (2012), and two EPs, Golden Haze (2010) and Empty Estate (2013), to critical acclaim.
History
Jack Tatum (whose full name is John Alexander Tatum) previously played in bands Jack and the Whale and FACEPAINT in the college town of Blacksburg. He began recording under the name Wild Nothing in the summer of 2009. Emerging at a time when a handful of C86-esque groups were in vogue, Tatum's demos garnered attention in indie music circles with a cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting." Tatum signed with the Captured Tracks record label after the success of these demos, and began touring with Haley, Goodman and drummer Max Brooks.

In this episode we’re treading on some very thin ice, way out of our usual comfort zones… talking very loosely about late 1980s British indie genre, Shoegaze.
After we stumble uncomfortably through a brief (and probably incorrect) history of what it was and how it came to be (try Wikipedia for something better), we haul ourselves onto the solid ground of fuzz pedals! Specifically EHX Big Muff-inspired fuzzes from four different manufacturers, plus a lovely old 1974 Sola Sound Tonebender for good measure.
Add plenty of reverb, a couple of offset guitars, turn it up and watch ’em go!
