Suroosh Alvi talks with the CBC's Wendy Mesley about the success of Vice, which rose from a Montreal-based print publication to a multimedia powerhouse.
We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates.
In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. According to the Pakistanis he spoke to, it's all taken a devastating toll on the country and is creating the next generation of militants.

VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.
Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.
Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

Suroosh Alvi is a Pakistani Canadian journalist and film-maker who was among the co-founders of Montreal-based Vice magazine alongside Shane Smith and Gavin McInnes in 1994. As well as being a media critic, Alvi has also worked on creating documentaries about places deemed dangerous in the Middle East and South Asia over the years.

Andrew Richard Capper (born February 14, 1973) is a London-based journalist and global editor of Vice Magazine.
Capper has contributed to wide array of fields related to Vice magazine, having co-founded the UK division of Vice with Andrew Creighton. He also contributes freelance journalism for The Guardian, Observer and NME, having previously the paper's Live Editor.
He has also worked with Jonathan Glazer and J Spaceman of Spiritualized on an installation for The Creator's Project at the Coachella Festival which centred around the Spiritualized song "Ladies & Gentleman, We Are Floating In Space".

We went to Pakistan to invesitage why suicide bombings, IED use, and the Taliban are all growing at alarming rates. In a recent trip to Pakistan to report on the recent spike in the region's violence and bloodshed, Suroosh Alvi heard over and over the same sentiment from people on the ground: America's war on terror is falling flat on its face. The military conflict in neighboring Afghanistan, repeatedly cited by locals, sends a constant flood of guns, refugees, militants, and heroin flowing into Pakistan. Heroin is now actually cheaper than hashish in cities like Lahore, and the Kalashnikov culture, the foundation of which was laid 30 years ago when the CIA financed the mujahideen, is all-consuming. VICE founder Suroosh Alvi travels to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.
Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.
Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

In response, Canada's Conservative government introduced a controversial anti-terrorism bill, which some fear will only further marginalize the country's Muslim population.
VICE founder Suroosh Alvi traveled to Calgary — labeled a “hotbed of terrorism” by Canadian media — to investigate allegations of radicalization among the city's Muslim youth. On Thursday, Suroosh will join On The Line to take your questions.

Back then the rival Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah were engaged in a bloody war for control of this tiny strip of land. Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of Egypt decided to start letting small numbers of folks into Gaza through their Rafah Crossing, we knew we could finally enter the region.

Suroosh ALVI is the co-founder of Vice, a youth media brand operating in 34 countries. He is a traveled journalist and an executive producer of film. In 2012, he traveled to Jamaica with Vice, where he produced the feature length film, "Reincarnated", featuring Snoop Lion, along with Ted CHUNG, senior Partner of Stampede Management, President of Doggy Style Records, CEO of Snoopadelic Productions.
They discuss the international co-production "Reincarnated" wich is part of the official selection.

Back in 1999, I directed a short doc of Shane Smith, Gavin McInnes and Suroosh Alvi moving their growing little magazine 'Vice' to New York from Old Montreal. They were fresh off a big "million dollar deal", and they were still best friends. It was for a show I made called Moving Stories', one of the first "reality shows" in Canada. It now feels like a sleepy NFB doc, which makes it all the more beautiful. Watch for the heartbreaking shot of the Twin Towers. -

Suroosh Alvi of VICE travels to Bin Laden's infamous compound to see what people really think about living next to America's most vilified fugitive. Unsurprisingly, their concern lies less with the proximity of Bin Laden than the chaos that his death has sparked. Although the controversy over whether or not Pakistan was harboring Bin Laden and the "trust deficit" is the primary focus for the American media, Pakistani news is busy covering the onslaught of violence that has broken out since the May 2nd raid. The people have seen a marked increase in American drone attacks, while the Taliban continues its retaliation with a relentless wave of suicide bombings. Anti-American sentiment has never run higher and this turbulent nation clearly has bigger issues than Bin Laden's death to contend with.

Vice Media, which has maintained a largely male following thanks to its guy-centric material (Gross Jar, anyone?) since its 1994 launch, is looking at the ladies to grow its business with the launch of female-focused channel Broadly ... It is backed by Unilever for its launch ... Morrissey came up with the idea for Broadly and approached Vice cofounders Shane Smith and Suroosh Alvi with it in the fall of 2014 and was hired on the spot ... ....
