Lake Tharthar, known in Iraq as Buhayrat ath Tharthar (Arabic: بحيرة الثرثار), is a lake situated 120 kilometers north of Baghdad between the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers. It is the largest lake in Iraq. The construction of several dams has made it an important source for irrigation. Its size shrinks and expands dramatically with the seasons. The lake is deep and nutrient poor;[clarification needed] there is very little vegetation except for sparse shrubs, some dense patches of growth and scattered Ziziphus trees. The area is farmed thanks to the use of tube-wells. A few sheep also graze in the area. The lake is threatened due to overfishing. This area was known colloquially as Wadi Tharthar.
Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (Arabic: صدام حسين عبد المجيد التكريتيṢaddām Ḥusayn ʿAbd al-Maǧīd al-Tikrītī; 28 April 1937 – 30 December 2006) was the fifth President of Iraq, serving in this capacity from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. A leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organisation Ba'ath Party – Iraq Region, which espoused ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup, later referred to as the 17 July Revolution, that brought the party to long-term power of Iraq.
As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflict between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and other industries. The state-owned banks were put under his control, leaving the system eventually insolvent mostly due to the Iran–Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions. Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatuses of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were filled with Sunnis, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population.

Iraq marked President Saddam Hussein's 62nd birthday on Wednesday with dancing girls, a military parade and a procession in which more than 100-thousand people took part.
The government organised four elaborate celebrations to mark the occasion, the most impressive of which was in his home-town of Tikrit.
But Saddam was nowhere to be seen, choosing instead to attend a private celebration at one of the presidential palaces in Baghdad where he met children from Iraq's 18 provinces.
The Iraqi government started holding nation-wide celebrations to mark Saddam's birthday in 1985.

Iraq's Shiite-dominated government said the killings of 15 women and children in a U.S. attack on a Sunni area were a "sorrowful matter," but emphasised on Friday that civilian deaths are unavoidable in the fight against al-Qaida in Iraq .
The comments by government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh appeared to be tacit approval of Thursday's raid northwest of Baghdad . They suggested the Iraqi government holds the American military to a different standard when it comes to assaults against suspected Sunni insurgents.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's government has complained loudly to U.S. military officials when Shiite civilians have been killed in American attacks against Mahdi Army militants, and tensions have been high over recent shootings of Iraqi civilians by private security contractors protecting U.S.-government-funded work.
On Friday, al-Dabbagh said the area targeted by American forces was a known base for insurgents, whom he accused of hiding among civilians.
The assault targeting senior al-Qaida in Iraq leaders near Lake Tharthar, about 50 miles northwest of the capital, inflicted one of the heaviest civilian death tolls in the offensive against the terror network in recent months. The military said 19 suspected insurgents, six women and nine children died, and two suspected insurgents, one woman and three children were wounded.
A U.S. spokesman said the military would examine surveillance footage and interview troops to confirm the sequence of events.
He accused al-Qaida fighters of using their relatives and other innocent people to shield themselves.
American troops pursuing them faced small-arms fire, and a subsequent airstrike caused most of the casualties.
Tensions are running high in Iraq over the killings of civilians by U.S. forces and private security guards.

A wave of bombings targeting commercial areas in and around Iraq's capital Baghdad has killed at least 18 civilians, according to officials. The deadliest attack on Sunday took place in Baghdad's Khilani Square, where a car bomb killed at least seven people and wounded 25 others, a police officer said. The car was parked near a Sunni mosque and a gathering of motorcycle vendors. Hours earlier, an explosives-laden car exploded in the town of Mahmudiya, about 30km south of Baghdad, killing at least four civilians, another police officer said. Three people were killed and 13 wounded in another car bomb explosion in Baghdad's southwestern Amil neighborhood, the officer added, while two others were killed in a blast in the nearby Bayaa district. In the capital's eastern suburb of Husseiniyah, a bomb went off in an outdoor market, killing two civilians and wounding six others, police said. Medical officials confirmed the toll, and all officials spoke to the Associated Press news agency on condition of anonymity. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group and other Sunni groups are believed to be behind the attacks. The blasts came as Iraqi security forces continued to clash with ISIL fighters for control of territory in Iraq's Western Anbar province. In an interview with state TV, Interior Ministry spokesman, Brigadier General Saad Maan Ibrahim, said government forces were close to recapturing the town of Garma, just east of the IS-held city of Fallujah, 65km west of the capital. Ibrahim added that fighting was also ongoing to dislodge the fighters from the canal lock system near Lake Tharthar just to the north. ISIL forces attacked the area on Friday, killing a senior officer and around a dozen other soldiers and officers.

Iraqi forces repel IS attacks in Salahudin and Anbar
Iraqi security forces repelled attacks by the so-called Islamic State (IS) terrorists in the provinces of Salahuddin and Anbar, according to security sources.
A provincial security source said that the Iraqi army, backed by volunteers of the Popular Mobilization Forces, repelled an overnight attack by dozens of IS terrorists from two directions on Iraq's largest oil refinery of Baiji, in Salahuddin.
The source added that IS terrorists were forced to withdraw following heavy clashes with the troops which resulted in two huge fires in a few of the refinery facilities.
In Anbar, Iraqi security forces continued their advance to recover the Nadhim al-Taqseem area near Tharthar Lake north of Fallujah, 50 km west of Baghdad.

ISIS Massacres 322 Sunni Tribesmen, Dumping Women and Children In a Well!
http://www.undergroundworldnews.com
The Iraqi government said Sunday that at least 322 members of the Al-Bu Nimr tribe were murdered by Islamic State fighters over the past week, including dozens of women and children whose bodies were found dumped in a well.
Tribal leader Sheikh Naeem al-Ga'oud said that 75 members of his tribe were killed on Sunday while trying to escape the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). They were gunned down and dumped near the town of Haditha.
“The number of people killed by Islamic State from Al-Bu Nimr tribe is 322. The bodies of 50 women and children have also been discovered dumped in a well," the country's Human Rights Ministry said on Sunday.
The Al-Bu Nimr tribe is a Sunni clan that has been fighting the Islamic State. The tribe held IS off in western Anbar province for weeks, before running out of fuel and ammunition. After the clan withdrew, IS rounded up the members and has been executing them since the beginning of last week.
Al-Ga’oud also told Reuters that IS fighters had killed 50 members of his tribe who were fleeing IS in Anbar province on Friday. They were on foot in a desert area of the province near Tharthar Lake when they were intercepted and killed by IS.

3.. The Syrian army and armed forces continued targeting terrorists in the various provinces, regaining control over the town of Ghanya in Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib countryside.
According to a military source, the army killed terrorists of IS in a special operation against one of their dens in Rahoum village in the eastern countryside of Homs province.

4.. The embassy of Saudi Arabia in Kuwait has reportedly taken legal action against a Kuwaiti lawmaker that criticized the kingdom’s military aggression against neighboring Yemen.
The controversial measure was taken after Kuwaiti MP Abdulhameed Dashti criticized the devastating Saudi military campaign across Yemen during an interview with a Lebanese TV channel.
The lawsuit by the Saudi embassy claims that Dashti’s criticism of its air strikes in Yemen insulted the kingdom, said the press reports, citing Saudi embassy authorities.
According to the reports, the legal measure by the Saudi regime is the second against the Shia Kuwaiti lawmaker. In the previous case, Dashti was accused of insulting the kingdom and the Saudi monarchy.
5.. Almost 4,000 Saudi forces fled their border bases in anticipation of Riyadh’s order for launching a ground assault on Yemen, European diplomatic sources said.
The European sources said that the Saudi forces’ mass AWOL forced Riyadh to declare ceasefire and dissuaded it from launching ground attacks against Yemen.
Other reports also said that over 10,000 soldiers from different Saudi military units have fled the army battalions and the National Guard.
Experts believe that the Saudi army lacks strong morale to launch a ground invasion of Yemen and such an attack would be considered as a suicide for Saudi Arabia.
Despite Riyadh’s claims that it is bombing the positions of the Ansarullah fighters, Saudi warplanes are flattening residential areas and civilian infrastructures.
6.. Rajab and Sha'baan are the seventh and eighth months in the Islamic Lunar Calendar. Fasting during these two months is highly recommended even for one day at least. Many hadiths stated by the holy Prophet, peace be upon him and his progeny and the infallible Imams, peace be upon them, recommend fasting during these two months for the benefits one can gain both on spiritual and health levels.

But the Iraqi leader has never attended these public events.
This year he attended a private party with Iraqi children at one of the presidential palaces in Baghdad.
The biggest celebration was in Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.
More than 100-thousand people, many who were bused in, chanted their allegiance to Saddam as they marched through parade grounds decorated with ribbons and his picture.
Izzat Ibrahim, Saddam's deputy on the all-powerful Revolutionary Command Council presided over the celebrations. He cut a round piece of cake about two metres (six feet) in diameter.
The girls danced as loudspeakers blared songs in praise of Saddam.
Armed members of the ruling Baath party brandished automatic rifles, as Iraqi leaders in military fatigues looked on from their marble-coated balcony.
The parade grounds in the eastern outskirts of this agricultural town where Saddam was born 62 years ago, were festooned with ribbons and, like elsewhere in Iraq, were decorated with Saddam's portraits of all sizes and shapes.
The authorities had started busing people to Tikrit since the early morning.
They were quickly organised into groups each carrying a banner indicating the region they have come from and expressing wishes for a long and happy life for the president.
Festivities also took place at al-Tharthar, an artificial lake where Iraqi engineers have constructed a tourist city of 10,000 houses.
A dam on one of the tributaries of the Tigris river was inaugurated at 5 p.m. local time - the hour the authorities say Saddam was born.
The Iraqi vice president Taha Ramadan was on hand to cut the compulsory birthday cake, tour the new developments and drop a line against the U-S and its allies.

US military officials were not immediately available to comment on Wednesday.
But they issued a statement late on Tuesday saying 20 militants had been captured and an undetermined number of rebels killed in what appeared to be the same raid.

A fantastic video that chronicles the 15-month tour of a platoon in the U.S. Army's premiere combat unit - The Third Infantry Division. Follow these soldiers as they enter what was called "the most dangerous city in the world", Ramadi, in the heart of Al Anbar province of Iraq in 2007. Watch in awe as "Anbar Awakening" and "The Surge" develop into a counterinsurgency success story that spreads across the entire country. Witness these soldiers as they then move to the desert north of Ramadi and in the Lake Thar Thar region to ensure that Al Qaeda in Iraq has no respite. A rare glimpse into the life and times of American soldiers in war as it can only be seen through their eyes.
