11. Al-Yawer speaking in Oval Office
STORYLINE:
On a day of renewed violence in the Middle East, US President George W Bush expressed determination to see Iraq hold elections on 30 January 2005.
Meeting interim Iraqi President Ghazi al-Yawer at the White House in Washington on Monday, Bush said that a free society in Iraq "will be a major defeat for the terrorists".
Earlier on Monday, Islamic militants threw explosives at the gate of the US consulate in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, then forced their way into the building, prompting a gun battle that left seven people dead and several injured.
Bush said the attacks were a reminder "that the terrorists are still on the move," and "interested in affecting the will of free countries".
Bush thanked Saudi Arabia for quelling the attack and promised to find out more about who caused it. He said he was confident Saudi Arabia would share information with the United States.
As far as the planned January 30 elections in Iraq, Bush said the US would do everything it could to make the elections in Iraq as safe as possible. But he added that you could never guarantee 100 per cent security.
For his part, al-Yawer expressed resolve to defeat the insurgents, saying, "victory is not only possible, it is a fact".
Al-Yawer said the majority of Iraqis wanted to hold the January elections, insisting only that "some politicians" advocated postponing the vote.
The interim Iraqi president is an influential leader in Sunni Muslim regions of Iraq where the fiercest battles against insurgents have been waged.
While al-Yawer insists he wants elections held on time, other Sunni leaders want it to be postponed, saying the ongoing violence in these areas would stop people from voting.

STORYLINE:
The Sunni Muslim head of the Iraqi Governing Council was chosen as Iraq's new president on Tuesday after America's preferred candidate, former Foreign Minister Adnan Pachachi, turned down the post, council members and officials said.
UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi issued a statement confirming the appointment of Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer as the largely ceremonial head of state.
The announcement breaks the deadlock over appointment of a new Iraqi government to assume power June 30.
Ibrahim al-Jaafari of the Shiite Muslim Dawa party and Rowsch Shaways, speaker of parliament in the Kurdish autonomous region in Irbil, were named vice presidents, Brahimi said.
The rest of the Cabinet was due to be announced later.
A chaotic scenario unfolded after council members angrily accused the American governor of Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, of trying to force the choice of Pachachi for the post.
An aide to Pachachi, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 81-year-old former minister was named president but immediately turned down the post.
Although the Americans had favoured Pachachi, most of the 22-member Governing Council backed al-Yawer, a civil engineer educated in Saudi Arabia and the United States.
Baghdad locals expressed their support for Ghazi al-Yawer saying he was well qualified for the job.

It's my pleasure to stand here in front of you to express on behalf of all Iraqis our deepest gratitude to the United Nations represented by UN General Secretary, his excellency Mr Kofi Annan and our friend, his excellency Mister Lakhdar Brahimi for the great human efforts exerted for assisting Iraqis to step forward towards full sovereignty through the formation of the Ira3qi interim Government which Mister Brahimi spent a great effort with a lot of bravery and distinguished wisdom. We Iraqis also look forward for being granted full sovereignty through a Security Council resolution to enable us to rebuild a free, independent, democratic and federal unified homeland. Thank you very much."
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Iyad Allawi, New Iraqi Prime Minister
"Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I'm going to lay out my vision and my government goals later today in the official ceremony but now really I would like to express my deepest thanks to the United Nations and the Secretary General and to his distinguished envoy Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi for his vital role and support in the political process in Iraq, and for his unique contribution made to Iraq in these difficult times that Iraq's passing through. After 35 years of ruthless tyrannical regime, and after the liberation of Iraq by the coalition forces under the leadership of the United States, we are starting now our march towards sovereignty and democracy and establishing the interim government in Iraq during this critical junction in history of this nation. It is with acknowledgement and deepest appreciation we thank the United Nations and especially the efforts done by Mr. Brahimi, and his capabilities and unique experience in bringing about a positive experience in Iraq.

STORYLINE:
A French journalist missing in Iraq has been "abducted" according to interim Iraqi President Ghazi al-Yawer, who met French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on Thursday.
Al-Yawer promised to do everything in his power to secure the release of 43-year-old Florence Aubenas who worked for the ''''Liberation'''' newspaper.
She disappeared in Iraq on January 5 with her Iraqi interpreter, Hussein Hanoun al-Saadi.
French authorities previously said they did not know whether Aubenas had been kidnapped. The daily newspaper Liberation said it had still had no news from her.
After talks with French President Jacques Chirac, al-Yawer was asked if the war in Iraq was worth it in the light of the US acknowledgment on Wednesday that no weapons of mass destruction had been uncovered and the search had ended.
"What has happened has happened," the Iraqi president told reporters. "But the war rid Iraq of a vicious regime which established a dynasty of villains."
Al-Yawer also said his country must do everything possible to encourage all Iraqis to vote in the elections on 30 January.
He said he and Chirac agreed that the elections must take place on the proposed date.
Paris hopes the elections will end a period of strained relations between the two countries.
Al-Yawer''''s visit should have taken place last September but was postponed after the kidnap of two French journalists in Iraq.
Relations were again tested when Chirac left a European Union summit in Brussels on November 5 without seeing Iraqi interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi.
The French president denied this action was a deliberate snub.
France''''s vigorous opposition to the US-led invasion of Iraq has left Paris with a back-seat role regarding Iraq. That is something France hopes to change.
Al-Yawer''''s three-day visit ends on Friday with a lunch with Foreign Minister Michel Barnier.

STORYLINE:
The Iraqi interim President Ghazi al-Yawer met Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in Rome on Friday ahead of a meeting with the Italian prime minister.
The visit was part of a European tour that took him to Germany on Thursday and also includes Spain, Britain and the European Union headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
Al-Yawer postponed a visit to Paris, originally meant to be the first stop on his European tour.
No official reason has been given, but France and Iraq have faced tension recently over the kidnapping of two French journalists in Iraq.
Friday's visit comes as the Italian government is trying to secure the release of two Italian aid workers kidnapped in Baghdad.
Italy was shocked by the kidnappings of Simona Torretta and Simona Pari, who work for the aid agency "Un Ponte Per..." ("A Bridge To...").
The pair was seized by armed militants with two Iraqis from their offices in Baghdad on Tuesday.
Berlusconi and opposition forces have pledged unity to secure the release of the two Italian women.
At least five Italians have been abducted in Iraq since April, two of whom have been killed by their kidnappers.
Berlusconi was a strong supporter of the war in Iraq, and deployed three thousand Italian troops following the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime.
Italy's troop commitment to help rebuild Iraq was the coalition's third-largest contingent in the war-ravaged country.
Al-Yawer and the new Iraqi government took over from the United States-run Coalition Provisional Authority on June 30.

STORYLINE:
Baghdad residents interviewed by APTN on Wednesday expressed their happiness and satisfaction over the formation of post-occupation government.
Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawer, the tribal chief who was named interim president of Iraq on Tuesday, said Iraqis have had enough of the chaos of occupation and are eager to govern themselves.
The new cabinet - a prime minister, a deputy premier for security and 31 ministers who include six women - will take over day-to-day operations of government ministries immediately, although the U.S.-run Coalition Provisional Authority remains the sole sovereign power in Iraq until June 30.
The Cabinet draws its membership from Iraq's ethnic, religious and cultural mosaic, bringing together lawyers, politicians, academics, human rights activists, engineers and businessmen from a broad spectrum in contrast to Saddam Hussein's regime which revolved around a Sunni Muslim clique from his hometown Tikrit.

15. Wide shot, meeting
STORYLINE:
Iraqi interim President Ghazi al-Yawer threatened on Monday to use a "very sharp sword" to fight insurgents and anyone else threatening the security of the country.
Al-Yawer spoke to reporters during a meeting with Defence Minister Hazem Shaalan and National Guard Brigadier General Muther al-Rashidi.
The country has been wracked by violence since the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime nearly 15 months ago.
Foreign and local fighters have launched numerous attacks on Iraqi civilian targets and against US forces in attempts to thwart the country's postwar reconstruction, killing US troops and hundreds of Iraqi civilians.
Al-Yawer said the roughly 160 thousand coalition forces led by the United States were required to stay in the country because of the danger posed by the rebels.
"Those who claim they are resisting the occupation, the occupation is over now," he said.
Security officials also sought to reassure Iraqis they were trying to restore order.
Al-Rashardi said the national guard has divided the capital, Baghdad, into eight sections to make it easier to control and ensure security there.
"We have very big plans to follow this up," Shaalan said. "We are ready to sacrifice ourselves for our people."
When the amnesty expired, however, he would work for the death penalty to be reintroduced in Iraq.

STORYLINE
Iraq's interim president on Saturday predicted that "most" Iraqis would stay away from the polls during Sunday's election because of security fears but he warned that the election could fail if Sunnis don't participate.
President Ghazi al-Yawer said at a news conference the day before the vote: "We hope that all (people) will take part."
Al-Yawer said: "There is a tiny minority who are boycotting but the majority chose not to take part for fear that their electorates are not going to the ballot boxes in areas which lack security."
It was not clear whether al-Yawer meant that the majority of Iraqis eligible to vote will not do so or that most of those who don't vote will stay away out of fear, rather than political reasons.
Insurgents, based mainly in the Sunni regions north and west of Baghdad, have launched a campaign of violence to wreck the election and have threatened to kill anyone who participates.
Some Sunni clerics have also called on their followers to boycott the vote.
Those two factors are likely to mean a low turnout by Iraq's Sunni Arab minority, while Shiites and Kurds have been eager to vote.
Al-Yawer waned that "any political process that does not have the participation of the Shiites, the Sunnis and the Kurds, it will not be fated to succeed."

7. Journalists speaking with Pachachi
STORYLINE
The veteran Iraqi diplomat Adnan Pachachi, a former foreign minister and a possible future Iraqi leader, has welcomed international efforts to lift UN sanctions against Iraq.
In an interview with APTN on Saturday, Pachachi said he had opposed sanctions since they were introduced and that the sanctions were responsible for "desolation" in Iraq.
Pachachi returned to to his homeland on Tuesday, pledging his support for the proposed interim administration.
He served in several Iraqi governments before the rise to power of the Ba'ath Party.
He left the country in 1956 spending much of the time in London as well as serving as a political aide in the United Arab Emirates.
The man appointed to rebuild Iraq, retired US General Jay Garner, on Monday said that he expected the "emerging leadership" to include Pachachi, as well as possibly a Christian leader, a Sunni Muslim leader and others.
Since Saddam Hussein was ousted last month, opposition representatives have met twice under US sponsorship to try to chart a political course for Iraq.
As many as 500 delegates are expected to gather by late May to try to select an executive leadership for an "interim authority" to govern while Iraqis fashion a new constitution and then hold elections.
