When we talk about the trolley problem, actually research has been done on the kinds of people who are willing to shove the fat guy over the rails. And what that research has uncovered is that these people tend to be utilitarian's in our society, okay. They tend to be people who are able to get the job done, who are less morally squeamish.
Now I've actually presented a variation of this dilemma to various psychopaths. I'll give an example of what the variation of the dilemma is. Imagine that you are a transplant surgeon. And you have five patients all in need of a transplant, heart, lungs, whatever. Okay? And they're all gonna die if they don't get that transplant, but there are no matching donors available.
Just by chance, a young traveler happens to walk past your surgery one day for just a regular check-up. And it turns out, hypothetically, that he is a direct match for all five, okay.
Now imagine that you are the transplant surgeon. Imagine if there was no come back to you, if that traveler somehow disappeared, okay. Would it be right to kill that young traveler in order to take his five organs to transplant them into your five patients?
Now, most people -- again it's the five and one life score. It's exactly like the trolley problem. But most people would say absolutely not. No, that's just not right. It's ethically not right to kill that person. But I've given this to psychopathic killers and they've said, well actually, you know what? Imagine if you were the families of those five guys. One life lost, is it really that bad when you're saving five others? What if that guy was an evil terrorist? And the five guys who needed to transplants were peace workers or aid workers, for instance. Would that make it any different?
Now, these are kinds of -- not exactly that -- but these are kinds of scenarios, these are kinds of decisions that world leaders and politicians have to grapple with. Here's another little one to conjure with. Imagine that you were, hypothetically, left in a room with a newborn baby, okay.
And you were left in that room for ten minutes with that newborn baby. And I told you -- and you have to believe this is true -- that that newborn baby will grow one day into Adolph Hitler, okay. And I told you that there would be no moral comeback, no legal comebacks on you were you to kill that baby with a pillow and walk out of that room.
Now, what would you do? Would you kill that baby and save millions of lives further on down the line in history? Or would you not be able to do it? These are moral conundrums, which are kind of played out in everyday life. I'm obviously reducing these to absurdities. But these are the kinds of decisions on a lesser level that you have to make if you're a politician or if you're a world leader.
Sending anyone out in to battle knowing that there's a chance that they might not come back, committing thousands of troops to a war is something that not many people can carry lightly on their conscience.
And if you look at psychopathic traits, actually, you know, psychopathic traits are pretty well represented in politicians and world leaders. You think about it. You know, politicians and leaders have to deal with all sorts of nasty kinds of crisis during their administrations, anything from the threats from rouge states to natural disasters like hurricanes or floods.
Also, though, they have to be pretty confident to run for office at all. They have to be very good at presenting themselves in a certain light. And they have to be very persuasive and manipulative. I mean, one senior UK politician, who should for obvious reasons remain nameless, had a great quote. And he said to me, "You know, in politics the only way to know who's stabbing you in the back is to see their reflection in the eyes of the person stabbing you from the front."
That's a great kind of quote, which, for me, sums up that kind of snakes and ladders game. Every man for himself, cut throat, kind of existence that characterizes politics I would say probably across the board in most nations of the world.

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection has been caught joking on camera with Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Social Services Minister Scott Morrison about the prospect of Papua New Guinea being swallowed by the ocean.
The comments were made this morning ahead of a press conference about Syrian refugees, just after Mr Abbott returned from the Pacific Islands forum, which focused on the effects of climate change.
Speaking amongst themselves, Mr Dutton remarked that an impending meeting about Syrian refugees was running to "Cape York time".
Mr Abbott replied that "we had a bit of that up in Port Moresby", to which Mr Dutton responds:
"Time doesn't mean anything when you're about to have water lapping at your door," presumably a reference to the prospect of rising sea levels caused by climate change.
The remark could prove an unwelcome distraction for the government a day after the jobless rate was announced to have fallen to 6.2 percent. The comment also comes amid reports that the government is planning a cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Dutton's officer said "the minister was having a private conversation".

When we talk about the trolley problem, actually research has been done on the kinds of people who are willing to shove the fat guy over the rails. And what that research has uncovered is that these people tend to be utilitarian's in our society, okay. They tend to be people who are able to get the job done, who are less morally squeamish.
Now I've actually presented a variation of this dilemma to various psychopaths. I'll give an example of what the variation of the dilemma is. Imagine that you are a transplant surgeon. And you have five patients all in need of a transplant, heart, lungs, whatever. Okay? And they're all gonna die if they don't get that transplant, but there are no matching donors available.
Just by chance, a young traveler happens to walk past your surgery one day for just a regular check-up. And it turns out, hypothetically, that he is a direct match for all five, okay.
Now imagine that you are the transplant surgeon. Imagine if there was no come back to you, if that traveler somehow disappeared, okay. Would it be right to kill that young traveler in order to take his five organs to transplant them into your five patients?
Now, most people -- again it's the five and one life score. It's exactly like the trolley problem. But most people would say absolutely not. No, that's just not right. It's ethically not right to kill that person. But I've given this to psychopathic killers and they've said, well actually, you know what? Imagine if you were the families of those five guys. One life lost, is it really that bad when you're saving five others? What if that guy was an evil terrorist? And the five guys who needed to transplants were peace workers or aid workers, for instance. Would that make it any different?
Now, these are kinds of -- not exactly that -- but these are kinds of scenarios, these are kinds of decisions that world leaders and politicians have to grapple with. Here's another little one to conjure with. Imagine that you were, hypothetically, left in a room with a newborn baby, okay.
And you were left in that room for ten minutes with that newborn baby. And I told you -- and you have to believe this is true -- that that newborn baby will grow one day into Adolph Hitler, okay. And I told you that there would be no moral comeback, no legal comebacks on you were you to kill that baby with a pillow and walk out of that room.
Now, what would you do? Would you kill that baby and save millions of lives further on down the line in history? Or would you not be able to do it? These are moral conundrums, which are kind of played out in everyday life. I'm obviously reducing these to absurdities. But these are the kinds of decisions on a lesser level that you have to make if you're a politician or if you're a world leader.
Sending anyone out in to battle knowing that there's a chance that they might not come back, committing thousands of troops to a war is something that not many people can carry lightly on their conscience.
And if you look at psychopathic traits, actually, you know, psychopathic traits are pretty well represented in politicians and world leaders. You think about it. You know, politicians and leaders have to deal with all sorts of nasty kinds of crisis during their administrations, anything from the threats from rouge states to natural disasters like hurricanes or floods.
Also, though, they have to be pretty confident to run for office at all. They have to be very good at presenting themselves in a certain light. And they have to be very persuasive and manipulative. I mean, one senior UK politician, who should for obvious reasons remain nameless, had a great quote. And he said to me, "You know, in politics the only way to know who's stabbing you in the back is to see their reflection in the eyes of the person stabbing you from the front."
That's a great kind of quote, which, for me, sums up that kind of snakes and ladders game. Every man for himself, cut throat, kind of existence that characterizes politics I would say probably across the board in most nations of the world.

The Minister for Immigration and Border Protection has been caught joking on camera with Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Social Services Minister Scott Morrison about the prospect of Papua New Guinea being swallowed by the ocean.
The comments were made this morning ahead of a press conference about Syrian refugees, just after Mr Abbott returned from the Pacific Islands forum, which focused on the effects of climate change.
Speaking amongst themselves, Mr Dutton remarked that an impending meeting about Syrian refugees was running to "Cape York time".
Mr Abbott replied that "we had a bit of that up in Port Moresby", to which Mr Dutton responds:
"Time doesn't mean anything when you're about to have water lapping at your door," presumably a reference to the prospect of rising sea levels caused by climate change.
The remark could prove an unwelcome distraction for the government a day after the jobless rate was announced to have fallen to 6.2 percent. The comment also comes amid reports that the government is planning a cabinet reshuffle.
Mr Dutton's officer said "the minister was having a private conversation".

It's a very handy thing to be a psychopath, says the psychologist Kevin Dutton, if we are to "remove the definition of psychopath away from the clinical setting" and instead apply it to "an everyday life kind of scenario."
Transcript-- If we remove the definition of psychopath away from the kind of more clinical settings to an everyday life kind of scenario, psychopaths tend to have quite a few positive characteristics going for them. They tend to be assertive; they don't procrastinate. They focus on the positives of situations. They don't take things personally. They don't beat themselves up when things go wrong. And they're very cool under pressure.
I'll give you an example, if you like: the Nike slogan "Just do it!" There's a psychopathic slogan for you, if ever there was one. Psychopaths do not procrastinate. Psychopaths, if they want something, they go for it and they go for it now.
Now actually, I write in the book that actually top sportsmen are very high in certain psychopathic characteristics. Now let me just go through them. You've got ruthlessness. You've got fearlessness. You've got mental toughness. You've got coolness under pressure. You've got the ability to focus remorselessly on a goal. I mean, these things are straight out of the sports psychology text books in many ways. So anyone from top golfers, to top cyclists, to top boxers, to top athletes, they are gonna be high on the psychopathic characteristics.
Now where we start getting into the realms of criminal psychopaths is when we look at natural aggression levels and perhaps natural levels of intelligence. If you've got those characteristics right there that I've told you about and you happen to be naturally violent, and you also happen to be naturally stupid -- not a very politically correct word there, but you happen to be low in intelligence - then your prospects, to be perfectly honest with you, are not gonna be that great. Okay? You're gonna wind up smacking a bottle over someone's head in a bar and you are gonna wind up in prison pretty quickly. Okay?
However, if you've got those traits I've just mentioned to you and you are not naturally violent, and you are also intelligent, then it's a different story altogether. Then, as the famous Reuters headline once mentioned, you are more likely gonna make a killing in the market than anywhere else.

There is no way that James Bond could shoot a gun, not to mention stir a cocktail. The spy's hand tremors, resulting from excessive alcohol consumption, would prevent him from performing even simple activities. In short, you would never want to put the fate of the world in the hands of a man who consumed over four times the recommended amount of alcohol.
If you took 007 to bed with you, you would be similarly disappointed, as Ian Fleming's character is at high risk for sexual dysfunction, along with a long assortment of alcohol-related diseases that will eventually kill him at the age of 56.
A medical analysis of James Bond, based on a study of his drinking habits from all 14 Bond novels, was recently published in the British journal BMJ.
The authors of the study challenge the notion that James Bond is to be seen as a strong role model, "someone admired for his performance under pressure and his ability to be master of all situations he encounters."
Drinking is his undoing. Indeed, for someone with such an impeccable etiquette, he makes the most elementary mistake when it comes to ordering a martini: shaken, not stirred.
A separate analysis of the fictional spy was conveyed to Big Think by Kevin Dutton, author of The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success. Dutton, a psychologist, doesn't exactly view Bond as a role model either. And yet, Dutton finds something else in Bond's psyche that he argues, counterintuitively, is of great social value.
Bond is "absolutely one of the classic examples of a functional psychopath," Dutton says. He possesses characteristics that can be used to "benefit society rather than detract from society."
It is Bond's lack of conscience and remorse that society ought to value the most, as we need people like that to do our dirty work. For instance, a member of the special forces can't dwell on killing a person, Dutton points out. If you do, Dutton says, "then the next bullet could be going through your head."
So it is Bond's emotional detachment that suits him so well as a spy. And that is why we would want to put his psychopathic personality, if not his shaky hand, on the line to save us all.
Transcript: I've been running a survey over these past couple of months actually. And I've been giving out a special psychometrically validated questionnaire, which tests the presence of psychopathic traits within members of the general population. I've been giving it out to friends of mine who are film critics actually. And I've been asking them to rate various iconic figures in film for where they fall on various characteristics.
And if we take say the iconic spy figure, James Bond, the British secret service agent, 007 himself, you find that James Bond is probably one of the most nailed down, functional, psychopaths that there is. I mean, James Bond is ruthless, he's fearless, he's extremely focused, he's mentally tough. He's, of course, absolutely without conscience and remorse. He's one of the biggest philanders that's ever worked for the British secret service. Although, I couldn't say that hand on heart officially. But I do know some of them.
But James Bond is absolutely one of the classic examples of a functional psychopath. Those characteristics are being used to benefit society rather than detract from society. I've interviewed a lot of Special Forces soldiers and in Special Forces you can't afford to dwell on the fact that you've pulled the trigger and killed someone. If you do, then the next bullet could be going through your head. So you have to be very emotionally detached in kind of professions like that.
I think it was writer George Orwell once wrote that good men sleep soundly in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. And I think this is exactly why we need figures such as James Bond who with a bit of poetic license do exist in real life. And why we need certain Special Forces troops as well.

The spy's hand tremors, resulting from excessive alcohol consumption, would prevent him from performing even simple activities. In short, you would never want to put the fate of the world in the hands of a man who consumed over four times the recommended amount of alcohol.
If you took 007 to bed with you, you would be similarly disappointed, as Ian Fleming's character is at high risk for sexual dysfunction, along with a long assortment of alcohol-related diseases that will eventually kill him at the age of 56.
A medical analysis of James Bond, based on a study of his drinking habits from all 14 Bond novels, was recently published in the British journal BMJ.
The authors of the study challenge the notion that James Bond is to be seen as a strong role model, "someone admired for his performance under pressure and his ability to be master of all situations he encounters."
Drinking is his undoing. Indeed, for someone with such an impeccable etiquette, he makes the most elementary mistake when it comes to ordering a martini: shaken, not stirred.
A separate analysis of the fictional spy was conveyed to Big Think by Kevin Dutton, author of The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success. Dutton, a psychologist, doesn't exactly view Bond as a role model either. And yet, Dutton finds something else in Bond's psyche that he argues, counterintuitively, is of great social value.
Bond is "absolutely one of the classic examples of a functional psychopath," Dutton says. He possesses characteristics that can be used to "benefit society rather than detract from society."
It is Bond's lack of conscience and remorse that society ought to value the most, as we need people like that to do our dirty work. For instance, a member of the special forces can't dwell on killing a person, Dutton points out. If you do, Dutton says, "then the next bullet could be going through your head."
So it is Bond's emotional detachment that suits him so well as a spy. And that is why we would want to put his psychopathic personality, if not his shaky hand, on the line to save us all.
Transcript: I've been running a survey over these past couple of months actually. And I've been giving out a special psychometrically validated questionnaire, which tests the presence of psychopathic traits within members of the general population. I've been giving it out to friends of mine who are film critics actually. And I've been asking them to rate various iconic figures in film for where they fall on various characteristics.
And if we take say the iconic spy figure, James Bond, the British secret service agent, 007 himself, you find that James Bond is probably one of the most nailed down, functional, psychopaths that there is. I mean, James Bond is ruthless, he's fearless, he's extremely focused, he's mentally tough. He's, of course, absolutely without conscience and remorse. He's one of the biggest philanders that's ever worked for the British secret service. Although, I couldn't say that hand on heart officially. But I do know some of them.
But James Bond is absolutely one of the classic examples of a functional psychopath. Those characteristics are being used to benefit society rather than detract from society. I've interviewed a lot of Special Forces soldiers and in Special Forces you can't afford to dwell on the fact that you've pulled the trigger and killed someone. If you do, then the next bullet could be going through your head. So you have to be very emotionally detached in kind of professions like that.
I think it was writer George Orwell once wrote that good men sleep soundly in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf. And I think this is exactly why we need figures such as James Bond who with a bit of poetic license do exist in real life. And why we need certain Special Forces troops as well.

He was also a talented treble singer, becoming BBC Radio 2 Young Chorister of the Year in 2006, and was a member of the treble boyband The Choirboys as well as one of the three boys in Kenneth Branagh's film production of The Magic Flute.
William is currently a student at the Yehudi Menuhin School and will be continuing his musical studies in Lausanne, Switzerland, from September.
