One that is particularly complex is chronic fatigue syndrome, CFS. As the name implies, chronic fatigue syndrome causes a person to have many bouts of fatigue along with a variety of other symptoms that affect their life. Some of the other symptoms, beside fatigue, include muscle aches, impaired memory or mental concentration, malaise that lasts longer than 24 hours, and insomnia. People who suffer from CFS typically function at a lower level of activity than before they became ill. Often, cases of chronic fatigue syndrome can go undiagnosed and untreated for many years. CFS isn’t a cut and dry case. There are several “case definitions” to identify true cases of CFS. One case involves the patient suffering from sever chronic fatigue for at least six consecutive months. This fatigue is not due to overexertion, and conditions will be ruled out by physician. The second case is that the fatigue interferes daily with regular activities and work. Along with the first two cases, the patient must suffer from four of a variety of symptoms, such as malaise, unrefreshing sleep, joint pain without swelling or redness, severe headaches and tender lymph nodes. There is no set cause for chronic fatigue syndrome identified by doctors and scientists. The current hypothesis is that CFS is caused by multiple triggers, such as infections, a faulty immune system, lack in improper diet and nutrition and stress. Along with a lack of cause, there is no set cure for CFS nor has a proper prescription medication been created. To get closer to a solution, it is recommended that those diagnosed with CFS monitor and keep track of their bouts of fatigue.
