British adventurer says it's a tragedy that global warming enabled him to swim at the Geographic North Pole

As an environmental campaigner, Lewis Gordon Pugh, a 37-year old British lawyer and endurance swimmer, wanted to highlight the impact of climate change in the high Arctic. On July 15, he jumped into freezing waters at the Geographic North Pole and swam one kilometre in 18 minutes and 50 seconds. The temperature of 28.7 F(-1.8C) reportedly is the coldest water that a human has managed to swim in and survive. Pugh has earned the name "Polar Bear" because of his ability to raise his body temperature.
Pugh swam in what is essentially an ice crack, a patch of open sea at the top of the world. Open water is becoming more common during the summer months. Many scientists believe that by 2040, the Arctic could be entirely ice-free during summer. According to the World Wildlife Fund, Arctic air temperatures may rise as much as 12 degrees C in the next 100 years. Pugh's swim was captured by a documentary crew.

One hundred years ago this month, April 6th, American explorer Robert Peary claimed to be the first man to reach the North Pole. Many have disputed the claim, saying his journey could not have been made in the time he claimed. But nearly a century later, a young British explorer named Tom Avery decided to recreate his historic journey using the same route, techniques and equipment that the American explorer had used in 1909. In a grueling 800 kilometer trek in 2005, Avery and his team reached the North Pole in just under 37 days - and beat Peary's time by five hours.

British adventurer says it's a tragedy that global warming enabled him to swim at the Geographic North Pole Wednesday July 25th, 2007 As an environmental campaigner, Lewis Gordon Pugh, a 37-year old British lawyer and endurance swimmer, wanted to highlight the impact of climate change in the high Arctic. On July 15, he jumped into freezing waters at the Geographic North Pole and swam one kilometre in 18 minutes and 50 seconds. The temperature of 28.7 F(-1.8C) reportedly is the coldest water that a human has managed to swim in and survive. Pugh has earned the name "Polar Bear" because of his ability to raise his body temperature. Pugh swam in what is essentially an ice crack, a patch of open sea at the top of the world. One hundred years ago this month, April 6th, American explorer Robert Peary claimed to be the first man to reach the North Pole. Many have disputed the claim, saying his journey could not have been made in the time he claimed. But nearly a century later, a young British explorer named Tom Avery decided to recreate his historic journey using the same route, techniques and equipment that the American explorer had used in 1909. In a grueling 800 kilometer trek in 2005, Avery and his team reached the North Pole in just under 37 days - and beat Peary's time by five hours. -

As an environmental campaigner, Lewis Gordon Pugh, a 37-year old British lawyer and endurance swimmer, wanted to highlight the impact of climate change in the high Arctic. On July 15, he jumped into freezing waters at the Geographic North Pole and swam one kilometre in 18 minutes and 50 seconds. The temperature of 28.7 F(-1.8C) reportedly is the coldest water that a human has managed to swim in and survive. Pugh has earned the name "Polar Bear" because of his ability to raise his body temperature.
Pugh swam in what is essentially an ice crack, a patch of open sea at the top of the world. Open water is becoming more common during the summer months. Many scientists believe that by 2040, the Arctic could be entirely ice-free during summer. According to the World Wildlife Fund, Arctic air temperatures may rise as much as 12 degrees C in the next 100 years. Pugh's swim was captured by a documentary crew.

Leaving the North Pole, we visited Franz Josef Land before sailing back to Murmansk. Along the way we saw polar bears, walruses, seals and birds. I can't even begin to describe what it feels like walking around north pole NY in 6 degrees Fahrenheit weather. Your nostrils freeze, your breath only quicker cools you down and between all the lights and music and christmas carols it felt like I should have been there a few months prior when it was nice and warm. An in-depth video of a voyage through the Arctic Ocean ice to the geographic North Pole on the nuclear powered icebreaker '50 Years of Victory'. Leaving the North Pole, we visited Franz Josef Land before sailing back to Murmansk. Along the way we saw polar bears, walruses, seals and birds.
'50 Years of Victory' (50 лет Победы / 50 Let Pobedy) is the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the world. She is an engineering marvel and is powered by 2 nuclear reactors that produce 75,000 horsepower giving her the ability to break through ice up to 2.8 meters thick or nearly 10 feet of ice.
The 50 Years of Victory has an endurance of 5 years before she needs refuelling with new uranium. The reactors eliminate greenhouse gas emissions that are characteristic of ships burning fossil fuels.

Alright, so what are we doing next? We're going to be doing something I've wanted to do for years. We're going to dog sledding! Woo!

I even once went to Mexico. It's a little bit warm. When I got there I was about eight feet as I am usually and when I came back I was five foot four.

There is no place on earth that embraces winter with as much enthusiasm as Quebec City. Having the chance to participate in the Winter Carnival festivities was an opportunity of a lifetime. What did we do? Well, it's more like what didn't we do. Ice canoeing, dog sledding, sleigh riding and tobogganing to mention just a few. When we weren't exploring the Old Quarters of Quebec City we were off doing things like checking out the magnificent Ice Hotel or visiting with Bonhomme. Overall, it was a celebration of winter that we'll never forget. The following is a complete travel guide to experiencing Quebec City Carnaval.
Welcome to Quebec City! We are here in the winter capital of the world. And it is carnival which means everyone is out embracing the cold and embracing the winter fun.
Alright, so what are we doing next? We're going to be doing something I've wanted to do for years. We're going to dog sledding! Woo!
Go, puppies go!

We're going ice fishing. We're going to be catching our lunch today.
Ready to fish? I'm ready. I've got my bait. I've got my fishing rod. Let's do this.

I know. That's really bad fishing.
Okay, round two. Let's get ourselves a fish.
Oh, we have a fish and I feel kind of bad.
We got one.
I know I eat fish but I feel a little guilty right now.
Now it is time to cook it.

Here is our catch of the day. This is the big reveal. You can see the steam coming off.
That smells really nice. I know, I think they've put seasonings on it. Oh, yeah. That looks good.
Have it. Oh, I can't see. The smoke is going in my eyes. Alright, first bite.
Mmmm.
How is it? That's amazing.
Can you look at the camera?
They put some onions and spices inside and a little bit of butter. It's really good.
I think it is time for a romantic sleigh ride for two.
So right now we're getting ready to go inside Bonhomme's ice palace. Let's go visit him.
I even once went to Mexico. It's a little bit warm. When I got there I was about eight feet as I am usually and when I came back I was five foot four.
I melted a little bit.
