Arctic/Russia - Shumilov Leads Search For Sedov
T/I: 10:52:48
A group of
Russian specialists have travelled to the
Arctic Circle
to find the grave of
Russia's first
North Pole explorer.
Georgy
Sedov, a celebrated Russian hero, died during a
Polar expedition
in
1914. This latest team of specialists, called
The Adventure
Club, has found evidence showing that
Sedov may actually have been
buried on Gogonloa
Island. The group, led by geographer
Aleksander Shumilov, used metal detectors to search for a small cross, which archives suggest may have been buried with the body. The team found an area which matched drawings made by Sedov's companions of the burial site, but a thick layer of snow and ice prevented them from locating the actual grave.
