"Family Affair" was a 1971 number-one hit single recorded by Sly & the Family Stone for the Epic Records label. It became the fourth and final number-one pop hit for the band. Rolling Stone magazine later ranked the song #138 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
More details (from Wikipedia):
Released on November 6, 1971,[1] "Family Affair" was markedly different from the earlier Sly & the Family Stone hits. "Family Affair" is a somber, Hohner Pianet electric piano based record with a rhythm box (or drum machine) providing the rhythm, making it the first number-one hit to feature a programmed rhythm track. Sly Stone and his sister Rose sing lead on the song. The lyrics reflect the good and bad aspects of being family, with Sly delivering his part in a low funk-styled tone instead of his earlier gospel-based shout.
"Family Affair" was the most successful hit of Sly & the Family Stone's career, peaking at number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, while achieving the same on the Billboard R&B; Singles chart for five weeks.[2]. The band's long-awaited fifth album, There's a Riot Goin' On, debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts during the same period. There's a Riot Goin' On was typified by a deep, dark style of funk, evident in "Family Affair", that earned the album a place as one of the most influential albums of all time.

Sly and the Family Stone was an American band from San Francisco. Active from 1967 to 1983, the band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music. Headed by singer, songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone, and containing several of his FAMILY MEMBERS and friends, the band was the first major American rock band to have an "integrated, multi-gender" lineup.
Brothers Sly Stone and singer/guitarist Freddie Stone combined their bands (Sly & the Stoners and Freddie & the Stone Souls) in 1967. Sly and Freddie Stone, trumpeter Cynthia Robinson, drummer Gregg Errico, saxophonist Jerry Martini, and bassist Larry Graham comprised the original lineup; Sly and Freddie's sister, singer/keyboardist Rose Stone, joined within a year. They recorded five Billboard Hot 100 hits which reached the top 10, and four ground-breaking albums, which greatly influenced the sound of American pop, soul, R&B;, funk, and hip hop music. In the preface of his 1998 book "For The Record: Sly and the Family Stone: An Oral History", Joel Selvin sums up the importance of Sly and the Family Stone's influence on African American music by stating "there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone". The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
During the early 1970s, the band switched to a grittier funk sound, which was as influential on the music industry as their earlier work. The band began to fall apart during this period because of drug abuse and ego clashes; consequently, the fortunes and reliability of the band deteriorated, leading to its dissolution in 1975. Sly Stone continued to record albums and tour with a new rotating lineup under the "Sly and the Family Stone" name from 1975 to 1983. In 1987, Sly Stone was arrested and sentenced for cocaine use, after which he went into effective retirement.

Soul Clap Records and Aleph & Grisbi Productions are proud to present the Video Music Premiere of Funkadelic & Soul Clap feat. Sly Stone - In Da Kar.
Soul Clap's collaboration with George Clinton has been nothing short of incredible. The team efforts spanning generations of funk have created true musical dope-ness, which Clinton has proudly included on the new Funkadelic album (30 years since the last album!) the monster "In Da Kar”, featuring Sly Stone on keys. In support of the In Da Kar EFUNK remixes on Soul Clap Records, Soul Clap have enlisted the help of director and longtime friend Gabe Muniz-Alessio to bring the story to life with a music video. The goal was to create a video to make people think, because as George famously says, "THINK! It ain't illegal yet."
This video focuses on the dichotomous nature of the oil supply chain. The horror that surrounds oil production and extraction versus the perpetual joyride that's fuelled by it.
Along with being a nod to Funkadelic motifs (ex: the mixed format of the Atomic Dog video) the interplay of live action and claymation in this video points to how we, the joyriders, perceive (or fail to perceive) those living in and around the production end of the supply chain; somehow not real, not “live action”.
As the video progresses, the idyllic suburban world through which Soul Clap cruises gradually starts to crack and resemble the oil-producing world as depicted in the claymation scenes: the pollution of the Gulf of Mexico, the police state of so many oil producing nations (this particular scene being inspired by the struggle of Ken Saro Wiwa & MOSOP in the Nigerian Delta), and finally, all out war in the Middle East.
And just as George has been the connective tissue between so many musical movements & styles throughout the decades, so here is it he who connects the dots for us by pointing to a suburban valley ablaze with the fires of the petroleum industry that have been feeding our gas guzzler throughout our joyride. All of the subtle hints us that have been dropped thus far have metastasized into a spectacle that we cannot so easily ignore. Pipe it, Pump it, Truck it, and Fuck it…Damn.
We’re so honored to officially release the In Da Kar Music Video to the world. Getting Clinton’s blessing and musical participation has legitimized our EFUNK movement and opened a new chapter in the Soul Clap's sound. In this chapter of ultimate intergalactic funky-ness Everybody’s Freaky Under Natures Kingdom. That means YOU TOO, so won’t you join us?!

Sly & The Family Stone-Live At The Fillmore East October 4th & 5th, 1968 is a never before released live album set by Sly & The Family Stone which was recorded in 1968 at Bill Graham's legendary New York City venue The Fillmore East where the band performed for 2 nights. It will at long last be released for the first time ever on a 4-CD set comprised of these concerts (two shows per night), each disc featuring one of the shows.
On October 4th and 5th, 1968, shortly after the release of the band's third album Life, Sly & The Family Stone took the stage at Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore East in New York City. Along with the success of Dance To The Music, which was released earlier that year and spun off the Top 10 hit of the same name, Sly & The Family Stone were making a name for themselves on the concert circuit, with their dynamic, high energy live performances.
Epic Records recorded all four of these concerts (two shows per night) with plans to release a live album that would consist of selections from these performances but the release was shelved until now.

The DJ Mono LP album(Also known as "Monaural") of Woodstock 1969 Concert shown in the first image of the video slide show is very hard to find. So I made a mono mix from the Cotillion stereo LP album because I was not happy with how the stereo mix sounded through headphones with the rough stereo mix made under harsh conditions at the Live event in August of 1969. The engineers did a very good job

The engineers did a very good job considering the conditions that they had to endure during the 3 day event in relation to weather and technical problems that came up from time to time. A Timeless Event in Rock Music History.
Songs here include: "Dance To The Music", "Music Lover", & "I Want To Take You Higher".

The Story of Funk - One Nation under a Groove.
In the 1970s, America was one nation under a groove as an irresistible new style of music took hold of the country - funk. The music burst out of the black community at a time of self-discovery, struggle and social change. Funk reflected all of that. It has produced some of the most famous, eccentric and best-loved acts in the world - James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, George Clinton's Funkadeli

For anyone not acquainted with Sly And The Family Stone, this is what’s Rickey Vincent wrote in Funk: The Music, The People, And The Rhythm Of The One:
For mainstream America, the ambassador of funk was Slyvester Stewart, also known as Sly Stone. His outlandish appearance, infectious smile, throaty soul-singing voice, and hyperactive rock music turned America on at a time when the nation was searching for identity… The slang term far out was coined for the sole purpose of identifying Sly And The Family Stone…
The Family Stone was the first self-contained, all-purpose band. The warmth and innocence of the pop hits Everyday People and Hot Fun In The Summertime was but a smoke-screen for the assaulting lyrics and bone-crunching funk riffs of Don’t Call Me Nigger, Whitey, Stand! and Thank You (For Talkin’ To Me Africa)…
Sly Stone owned pop music from 1968 to 1970 and reached his highest rock high of all - Woodstock - but in a few short years disappeared not only from the scene, but the history as well… Sly’s music created such an open atmosphere of tolerance and truth that the wicked elements of racism were exposed and thrust into the pop dialogue like never before… The impact of Sly Stone on black music was greater than anyone else from that era except for James Brown.

this rare Sly Stone set features an opening number by the vocal backing group Little Sister including his youngest sister Vaetta Stewart. Sly was in the process of promoting "Fresh" his 7th consecutive gold album, featuring the single "If You Want Me To Stay" performed here at the end of this clip, live on national TV for the first time.
Recorded exclusively for video cameras at the Metromedia Square studios on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood during September of 1973, these songs aired as part of the third episode of a popular nationally syndicated rock concert TV program, the first episode to be produced entirely within the Metromedia production facility in Hollywood.
Despite high demand. this archival footage has yet to be formally reissued. This footage was given to me on a privately pressed DVD sourced directly through Sly and the band's original drummer Greg Errico, and I've been sitting on it for ten years. Some of it has been previously uploaded, but I have not seen the whole sequence with Little Sister anywhere.
In the middle of an elongated version of "Stand", Sly addresses the crowd to inspire the room of mostly placid audience members sitting under hot TV production lights:
“Seems like every time you get a whole bunch of lights on you, people have the tendency to want to sit down, and check you out, you see. They wanna sit down and check you out, so they can go home and say, ‘man… that wasn’t nothin’. Shoot. They ain’t did nothing.’ You in it too! This song is about all of us! You know what I mean? If you believe in anything at all, what do you believe in? What? Well then stand on up for it then, what’s wrong with you?”

In the 1970s, America was one nation under a groove as an irresistible new style of music took hold of the country - funk. The music burst out of the black community at a time of self-discovery, struggle and social change. Funk reflected all of that. It has produced some of the most famous, eccentric and best-loved acts in the world - James Brown, Sly & the Family Stone, George Clinton's Funkadelic and Parliament, Kool & the Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire.
During the 1970s this fun, futuristic and freaky music changed the streets of America with its outrageous fashion, space-age vision and streetwise slang. But more than that, funk was a celebration of being black, providing a platform for a new philosophy, belief system and lifestyle that was able to unite young black Americans into taking pride in who they were.
Today, like blues and jazz, it is looked on as one of the great American musical cultures, its rhythms and hooks reverberating throughout popular music. Without it hip-hop wouldn't have happened. Dance music would have no groove. This documentary tells that story, exploring the music and artists who created a positive soundtrack at a negative time for African-Americans.
Includes new interviews with George Clinton, Sly & the Family Stone, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & the Gang, War, Cameo, Ray Parker Jnr and trombonist Fred Wesley.

Great story told by Andy Newmark of how he met (and auditioned for) Sly Stone.
Andy explains (at 8:38) that he had "30 seconds to alter the course of my life".
Andy did 3 hour intimate sessions at Stebal Drums (Willowick, OH, USA)) January 3rd, 4th & 5th, 2014. This story was video taped on 1/5/14 by Robert L. Marcum.
Sly Stone's band was pivotal in the development of soul, funk, and psychedelic music, and was one of the hottest groups at this time.
Andy Newmark is best known as a popular session drummer, and for playing with the funk band Sly and the Family Stone from 1972 to 1973. Hired to replace Gerry Gibson, who in turn had replaced founding Family Stone member Gregg Errico, Newmark was invited to audition for Sly Stone by Family Stone saxophonist Pat Rizzo. Newmark went on to record one album as the Family Stone's drummer, Fresh (1973) and also performed with the band for two years in live concert.
After leaving the band in 1974, Newmark has performed and recorded with John Lennon, Cat Stevens, Joe Walsh, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, David Bowie, Roy Buchanan, Bryan Ferry, George Harrison, Rickie Lee Jones, Patrick Moraz, Randy Newman, Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Murray Head, Keith Richards, Rod Stewart, Ronnie Wood, Roxy Music, ABC, Hue and Cry, Laura Nyro,Nicolette Larson, Elkie Brooks, Sting, Steve Winwood, Nils Lofgren, George Benson and Michael Franks. He is featured on Carly Simon's 1971 album Anticipation and Gary Wright's 1975 album Dream Weaver.
In 1980, he was the sole drummer on John Lennon's last album, Double Fantasy, as well as Milk and Honey released in 1984. He was also the featured drummer on Yoko Ono's Season of Glass in 1981. His connection with the Double Fantasy album was reprised in 2012 with his contributions to the Lennon Bermuda tribute album on several tracks including those by Paul Carrack, Bryan Ferry, Nils Lofgren and Rocky and the Natives.
According to a 2006 Sound on Sound magazine interview with engineer Andy Jackson, Andy Newmark played drums on David Gilmour's On an island album. He also plays the drums on the last track of Pink Floyd's 1983 album The Final Cut.
Since 2011 Andy has been a member of Kent (United Kingdom) based band Rocky and the Natives.
Newmark is a Patron and visiting artist at drum and percussion school, Drumtech in London.
