Asian Youth Center (
AYC), history in
San Gabriel, Ca. Started by May Tao and
Judy Chu 23 year ago to help immigrant parents understand things like school districts. Now services entire community (
Mandarin, Vienamese,
Cantonese,
Spanish,
English) -- 45% non-Asian.
Just started

Afterschool educational enrichment (elementary, middle, and HS)
Chinese Language, Art,
Piano, college career education, parent education, tutoring, afterschool programming
2) Youth and family services. -- services for people in community outside the center (
Emergency Food,
Case management, gang intervention, empowering woman, preventing delinquency, helping low income familes).
Recent
Food drive with
La Casa de
San Gabriel (preschool and parent education). Both youth centers and La Casa still accepting donations (food, money, towels, diapers).
People can drop off at offices across from
Smith Park.

Del Mar High School (continuation school in San Gabriel)

Art talks a bit about importance of focusing on the good work kids are doing in the
SGV in addition to helping those who need it.
AYC gets a few hundred HS and college volunteers a year and enjoys partnering with other organizations. AYC has partnered with Career Partners.
Youth Center is open for open recreation all summer long for HS students (basketball, classes, tutoring)-- fun in safe, supervised environment.
Open to 9 or
10 pm during summer.

AYC also provides information and referrals for services that they don't provide. For example AYC would refer people in need of mental health resources to Asian Pacific Family Center.

The importance of civic education, especially in cross cultural environments: "

911." Some immigrants who don't have access to regional education -- even if they've been here for awhile.
Chinese American Bar Association / Asian Pacific
Legal Center -- free once a month legal counseling at AYC (third Wednesday of every month). 12-20 young attorneys give basic legal advice to see attorney and get help.
National Night Out in Rosemead:
Free hot dogs and child fingerprinting -- as well as ham
operator recognition.
