the patriotism we feel is the fruit of the long struggle to liberate
Laos under the leadership of the
Lao People's Revolutionary Party. According to the special feature published on

STORY: Today the Party turns 61 after being established on March 22, 1955.
The Party is the backbone of the country's political system and represents the interests of people from all walks of life. It formulates policies to spur progress in all areas of development.
December 2,
2015, was a day of huge celebration for Laos when people marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the
Lao PDR. For 40 years, under the leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, the country has enjoyed independence, sovereignty and full territorial integrity.
The
Lao people have gained freedom and more opportunities to develop the nation in all spheres in order to improve people's lives, both materially and spiritually. Laos' many ethnic groups have genuine ownership of the country and recognise the Party's successful leadership in repelling invaders and fighting for independence.
Over the past 40 years, significant progress has been made in a number of areas under the great and capable leadership of the Party. The Party's great achievements have seen the country develop rapidly, continuously and firmly, resulting in widespread changes to the country's appearance.
The economic base, which comprises various sectors, functions in line with market mechanisms under state management and the economy has been transformed into a smooth-running system.
Gross Domestic Product increased continuously between
1981 and
1985.
GDP grew on average by
5.5 percent annually, while from
1986 to
1990 the annual
GDP growth rate moderated to an annual average of
4.5 percent. The economic growth rate then rose again reaching
6.4 percent annually between
1991 and
1995. From
1996 to
2000, GDP grew at an average rate of 6.4 percent per year and between
2001 and
2005 average GDP growth was reported at 6.2 percent annually, before rising to 7.9 percent per annum from
2006 to
2010, and 8.2 percent per annum from
2011 and
2013. In 2015, GDP was 7.9 percent.
Average per capita income has also increased and now stands at
US$1,970.
It is disclosed that, the Party and state have given their full attention to poverty alleviation and comprehensive rural development so that the living conditions of all ethnic groups have gradually improved. Today, the number of families officially classified as poor is just 6.59 percent, while 88 percent of households have access to electricity. All districts in all provinces now have telephone access, with coverage reaching
100 percent, while all districts have road access in both the dry and wet seasons.
