Gilbert “Gil” Cates (June 6, 1934 – October 31, 2011), born Gilbert Katz, was an Award winning American film director and television producer, director of the Geffen Playhouse, and founding dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television. Cates is most known for having produced the Academy Awards telecast a record 14 times between 1990 and 2008.
Cates was born Gilbert Katz in New York City, the son of Jewish parents Nina (née Peltzman) and Nathan Katz, who was a dress manufacturer. He attended DeWitt Clinton High School, and majored at Syracuse University. According to the Jewish Journal, Cates stumbled into his profession by accident: As a pre-med student at Syracuse University, he was in the fencing team and was asked to instruct student actors in a production of Richard III on how to handle swords. He was so taken by the experience that he changed his major to theater.
Cates was a member of the Reform Jewish Wilshire Boulevard Temple. The Jewish Journal quotes him as saying that he only attended services on the High Holy Days, but felt “very proud to be Jewish”.
Gil Cates Jr., born October 4, 1969 in New York City, is an American actor and film maker. His 2006 documentary film Life After Tomorrow, which he co-produced and directed with Julie Stevens, won awards for both Best Documentary and Best Director at the Phoenix Film Festival.
He most recently directed the feature film "The Surface", starring Sean Astin and Chris Mulkey, and co-produced the 2013 film "Jobs" starring Ashton Kutcher. In addition, Cates is the director of the 2001 film The Mesmerist starring Neil Patrick Harris and Jessica Capshaw, the 2002 film A Midsummer Night's Rave, the 2006 documentary film Life After Tomorrow, the 2008 film Deal starring Burt Reynolds, the 2009 gambling documentary "Pass the Sugar", and the 2011 film Lucky.
Cates television credits include the 1991 Matlock Season 6 two-part episode The Suspect, the 1992 Major Dad Season 3 episode Three Angry Marines, the 1992 Silk Stalkings Season 1 episode Internal Affair, and the 1993 Doogie Howser, M.D. gay-themed Season 4 episode Spell it M-A-N.
Ariel Geltman "Ari" Graynor (born April 27, 1983) is an American actress, known for her roles in TV series such as The Sopranos and Fringe, in stage productions such as Brooklyn Boy and The Little Dog Laughed, and in films such as Whip It and For a Good Time, Call.... She also starred as Meredith Davis on the short-lived CBS television sitcom Bad Teacher, which was cancelled on May 10, 2014.
Graynor was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the daughter of Joani Geltman, a parenting expert, and Greg Graynor, a contractor. Her mother is from a Jewish family and her father is of Polish Catholic background (her paternal grandfather's surname was changed from "Gryzna"); Graynor was raised Jewish. She attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols, a private school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
Graynor first came to prominence as Caitlin Rucker on HBO's The Sopranos. Her film credits include An American Crime (2007), which premiered in January 2007 at the Sundance Film Festival. She also appeared early in the second season of UPN's Veronica Mars as the daughter of a bus driver. She made her Broadway debut as 'Alison' in 2005's Brooklyn Boy after appearing in the world premiere at South Coast Repertory. She also appeared in The Little Dog Laughed.
The Geffen Playhouse (or the Geffen) is a not-for-profit theater company producing in two venues—both owned by University of California Los Angeles. The Playhouse is located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.
The Geffen Playhouse was built in 1929 as the Masonic Affiliates Club, or the MAC, for students and alumni at UCLA. One of the first 12 structures built in Westwood Village, it was designed by architect Stiles O. Clements.
Originally named the Westwood Playhouse, the property was purchased by UCLA in 1993. UCLA's then chancellor, Charles E. Young, appointed Gil Cates, founder and former president of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, as its producing director. The theater was renamed in 1995 after media mogul David Geffen donated $5 million, one of the largest philanthropic donations ever made to an already constructed theater.
In 2002, the David Geffen Foundation made a $5-million lead gift towards an eventual $17-million capital campaign to renovate the theater. The renovation gutted the theater while keeping its historical character. The Geffen reopened on November 16, 2005 with the main 500 seat theater retained and a new 125-seat Audrey Skirball-Kenis Theater added. In March 2010, the Playhouse's board of directors named the mainstage the Gil Cates Theater.
Dermot Mulroney (born October 31, 1963) is an American actor and director. Acting since the 1980s, he is known for his roles in the films Young Guns, Where the Day Takes You, My Best Friend's Wedding, The Last Outlaw, About Schmidt, and August: Osage County. Mulroney played the main antagonist of NBC's Crisis, Francis Gibson.
Mulroney was born in Alexandria, Virginia. His mother, Ellen, was a housewife and amateur actress originally from Manchester, Iowa, and his father, Michael Mulroney, was a law professor (and amateur racecar driver) at Villanova University School of Law, originally from Elkader, Iowa. He has a sister, Moira, and three brothers, Conor, Kieran (who is also an actor), and Sean. Moira formerly worked in the Philadelphia DA's office as an assistant district attorney, and later at WXPN, an FM radio station in Philadelphia, but now works elsewhere in the non-profit industry. Some of Mulroney's ancestors immigrated from County Donegal and County Mayo in Ireland during the Irish Potato Famine; he is of seven eighths Irish, and one eighth German, ancestry. Mulroney attended Maury Elementary School and played cello in school and city youth orchestras, as well as acted in children's community theater. Mulroney attended the Interlochen Arts Camp as a cellist. He later attended T. C. Williams High School (grad. 1981) as well as Northwestern University (grad. 1985) in Evanston, Illinois, where he was a member of the fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta.

Here's the wonderful Darlene Cates seen here strolling down the red carpet with co-star Johnny Depp, being at home with her family, and in the make-up room. She talks candidly about how painful the end scene of 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape' was for her to film. She said it truly was 'art imitating real life'. Great lady! Great movie!
Gilbert 'Gil' Cates is an American film director and television producer. He's probably best known for producing the annual Academy awards shows on TV 14 times. Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced he will be producing the 80th Academy Awards, which broadcasts in February 2008. In an iChat interview from LA with Media Talk Correspondent Bob Ross of BobRossMovies.com, Gil talks about the awards shows and the WGA strike now affecting TV programming, and, perhaps, even the 2008 Oscars show. Buck Rogers is a fictional character who first appeared in a novella titled Armageddon 2419 A.D. by Philip Francis Nowlan published in the August 1928 issue of the pulp magazine Amazing Stories as Anthony Rogers. A sequel, The Airlords of Han, was published in the March 1929 issue. Philip Nowlan and the syndicate John F. Dille Company, later known as the National Newspaper Syndicate, were contracted to adapt the story into a comic strip. After Nowlan and Dille enlisted editorial cartoonist Dick Calkins as the illustrator, Nowlan adapted the first episode from Armageddon 2419, A.D. and changed the hero's name from Anthony Rogers to Buck Rogers. The strip made its first newspaper appearance on January 7, 1929. Later adaptations included a serial film, a television series, and other formats. ...
