Team Leader Responsibilities
You're going to be leading a team and it suddenly hits you. How? What's the secret to effective team leadership?
Here are some basic tips to help you get started right.
1. Make sure you have a clear mission and definite goals. Then make sure everyone on the team understands the mission and goals. For a more effective team, make sure each team member knows how they contribute and that you value that contribution.
2. Encourage, even demand full participation. It isn't uncommon for teams to devolve into a few members who actually work. When each member knows what they are expected to contribute, it's easier to keep them engaged throughout the project.
3. Insist on open communication. That isn't to say you can't allow subgroups within your team. Just make sure they keep everyone informed about what they're doing. This is an especially important point for virtual or distance teams where there is little or no face-to-face contact.
4. Keep your boss informed on what the team is doing. Occasionally provide an update to keep the boss up to speed, and happy, and also allow him or her to make minor course corrections if necessary. That will prevent discovering that you needed to approach the mission differently at the end of the project.
5. Most importantly, always remember that the team's purpose is not to further your career. It's interesting that understanding this point will be much more likely to advance your career than specifically using the team to advance your career.
One more thing. Have fun! And make it fun for your team too.

Gallup studies show only 30% of people are Actively Engaged despite all the attention on Engagement.

In the engagement surveys I conduct, the average business has about 50% Engaged AND Disengaged in total - This is a leaders first great opportunity! -
The remaining 50% - sitting on the fence waiting for a leader to engage them...I call this, the leaders "Sweet Spot".
An Actively Engaged team member is around 30% more productive than a fence sitter and retention is dramatically improved -- so it's essential that leaders work this sweet spot.
A leader's second opportunity is the disengaged people -- or "Bad Apples" -- target them as well - help them adjust their attitudes, or help them find another job!
Great leaders have Emotional Intelligence - but to really drive results and be exceptional - leaders need what I call EQ2 - Engagement Intelligence.
EQ2 involves really understanding your people, finding their individual motivators and working on these "Hot Buttons" to improve morale, attitude and results.

Hello Fitlifers! It's another Mindset Monday.
A young man recently came to me and he was looking for advice. He told me that he wanted to be an inspirational speaker, to be a leader. Today, I want to take the opportunity and share with you guys what I've learned over the years, and still learning about leadership. I want to give you 3 tools that may help in your journey in becoming a better leader.
In this week's Mindset Monday, I'm going to teach you how to become a better leader. So here are 3 tools that will guide in achieving that goal.
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Tool 2 - Serve
Tool 3 - Encourage
Let's get closer to each of these tools. And let's learn more how they work.
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Leading from the front specifically means protecting your followers.
As a true leader, one must put him/herself on the frontline to protect their followers. Often times we have the misconception that the leader is just up there for visibility. A true leader watches over and protects their followers.
I have a little story that I particularly liked about Gandhi. A mother brought her son to Gandhi and asked Gandhi to to tell her son not to eat sugar. Gandhi agreed and said ok. Bring him back in 2 weeks. So the mother did exactly what he said and two weeks later brought him back. Gandhi said to the young boy, ok my son... you should stop eating sugar it is bad for you. The boy stopped right away. Later, the mother was puzzled as to why Gandhi waited two weeks, so she went back and asked him. Gandhi replied, because in order for me to tell your son to stop. I had to stop.
A true leader is congruent in their teachings. If I'm going to teach you how to be healthy physically, emotionally and spiritually, I better be demonstrating success in my own life.
Tool 2 - Serve
As a true leader, it is important to serve those around you, especially when it seems like a trivial task. The true leader serves in the background and does things people don't normally see.
As a leader always ask yourself, "Who can I serve today?". To get into the habit of thinking this, you may want to store an alarm in your phone that says this.
Tool 3 - Encourage
As a true leader, it is important to encourage those around him/her. People need to be praised when they're doing well. When followers are struggling, the leader is there to encourage them along to strive to be better. Also, if there is ever a communication break down, the communication has to be open enough to take over for the team member that is struggling, or holding onto a project too long. I've seen too many goals go down in flames because someone was too embarrassed to simply say, "Yo, I need some help with this."
Just a recap with the three tools that we have just learned to be great leaders:
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Tool 2 - To serve, even when it seems like a trivial task.
Tool 3 - To encourage
Remember that we're all born to be leaders in our own ways. But we can be the leaders of change, not just for ourselves but also for our community. Leadership is selfless. It is passionate, collaborative and heartfelt.

A team leader or team lead is someone (or in certain cases there may be multiple team leaders) who provides guidance, instruction, direction and leadership to a group of other individuals (the team) for the purpose of achieving a key result or group of aligned results. The team lead reports to a project manager (overseeing several teams). The team leader monitors the quantitative and qualitative result that is to be achieved. The team membership may not directly report or answer to the team leader, (who is very often a senior member of the organization but may or may not be a manager) but would be expected to provide support to the team leader and other team members in achieving the team's goals.
A good team leader listens constructively to the membership and to the customer(s) of the results that the team is charged with delivering.
The responsibilities of a team lead vary greatly between organizations, but usually includes some responsibility for team building and ensuring teamwork. The term is used to emphasize the cooperative nature of a team, in contrast to a typical command structure, where the head of a team would be its "commander". People need to be praised when they're doing well. When followers are struggling, the leader is there to encourage them along to strive to be better. Also, if there is ever a communication break down, the communication has to be open enough to take over for the team member that is struggling, or holding onto a project too long. I've seen too many goals go down in flames because someone was too embarrassed to simply say, "Yo, I need some help with this." You're going to be leading a team and it suddenly hits you. How? What's the secret to effective team leadership?
Here are some basic tips to help you get started right.
1. Make sure you have a clear mission and definite goals. Then make sure everyone on the team understands the mission and goals. For a more effective team, make sure each team member knows how they contribute and that you value that contribution.
2. Encourage, even demand full participation. It isn't uncommon for teams to devolve into a few members who actually work. When each member knows what they are expected to contribute, it's easier to keep them engaged throughout the project.
3. Insist on open communication. That isn't to say you can't allow subgroups within your team. Just make sure they keep everyone informed about what they're doing. This is an especially important point for virtual or distance teams where there is little or no face-to-face contact.
4. Keep your boss informed on what the team is doing. Occasionally provide an update to keep the boss up to speed, and happy, and also allow him or her to make minor course corrections if necessary. That will prevent discovering that you needed to approach the mission differently at the end of the project.
5. Most importantly, always remember that the team's purpose is not to further your career. It's interesting that understanding this point will be much more likely to advance your career than specifically using the team to advance your career.
One more thing. Have fun! And make it fun for your team too.

Hello Fitlifers! It's another Mindset Monday.
A young man recently came to me and he was looking for advice. He told me that he wanted to be an inspirational speaker, to be a leader. Today, I want to take the opportunity and share with you guys what I've learned over the years, and still learning about leadership. I want to give you 3 tools that may help in your journey in becoming a better leader.
In this week's Mindset Monday, I'm going to teach you how to become a better leader. So here are 3 tools that will guide in achieving that goal.
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Tool 2 - Serve
Tool 3 - Encourage
Let's get closer to each of these tools. And let's learn more how they work.
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Leading from the front specifically means protecting your followers.
As a true leader, one must put him/herself on the frontline to protect their followers. Often times we have the misconception that the leader is just up there for visibility. A true leader watches over and protects their followers.
I have a little story that I particularly liked about Gandhi. A mother brought her son to Gandhi and asked Gandhi to to tell her son not to eat sugar. Gandhi agreed and said ok. Bring him back in 2 weeks. So the mother did exactly what he said and two weeks later brought him back. Gandhi said to the young boy, ok my son... you should stop eating sugar it is bad for you. The boy stopped right away. Later, the mother was puzzled as to why Gandhi waited two weeks, so she went back and asked him. Gandhi replied, because in order for me to tell your son to stop. I had to stop.
A true leader is congruent in their teachings. If I'm going to teach you how to be healthy physically, emotionally and spiritually, I better be demonstrating success in my own life.
Tool 2 - Serve
As a true leader, it is important to serve those around you, especially when it seems like a trivial task. The true leader serves in the background and does things people don't normally see.
As a leader always ask yourself, "Who can I serve today?". To get into the habit of thinking this, you may want to store an alarm in your phone that says this.
Tool 3 - Encourage
As a true leader, it is important to encourage those around him/her. People need to be praised when they're doing well. When followers are struggling, the leader is there to encourage them along to strive to be better. Also, if there is ever a communication break down, the communication has to be open enough to take over for the team member that is struggling, or holding onto a project too long. I've seen too many goals go down in flames because someone was too embarrassed to simply say, "Yo, I need some help with this."
Just a recap with the three tools that we have just learned to be great leaders:
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Tool 2 - To serve, even when it seems like a trivial task.
Tool 3 - To encourage
Remember that we're all born to be leaders in our own ways. But we can be the leaders of change, not just for ourselves but also for our community. Leadership is selfless. It is passionate, collaborative and heartfelt.

Hello Fitlifers! It's another Mindset Monday.
A young man recently came to me and he was looking for advice. He told me that he wanted to be an inspirational speaker, to be a leader. Today, I want to take the opportunity and share with you guys what I've learned over the years, and still learning about leadership. I want to give you 3 tools that may help in your journey in becoming a better leader.
In this week's Mindset Monday, I'm going to teach you how to become a better leader. So here are 3 tools that will guide in achieving that goal.
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Tool 2 - Serve
Tool 3 - Encourage
Let's get closer to each of these tools. And let's learn more how they work.
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Leading from the front specifically means protecting your followers.
As a true leader, one must put him/herself on the frontline to protect their followers. Often times we have the misconception that the leader is just up there for visibility. A true leader watches over and protects their followers.
I have a little story that I particularly liked about Gandhi. A mother brought her son to Gandhi and asked Gandhi to to tell her son not to eat sugar. Gandhi agreed and said ok. Bring him back in 2 weeks. So the mother did exactly what he said and two weeks later brought him back. Gandhi said to the young boy, ok my son... you should stop eating sugar it is bad for you. The boy stopped right away. Later, the mother was puzzled as to why Gandhi waited two weeks, so she went back and asked him. Gandhi replied, because in order for me to tell your son to stop. I had to stop.
A true leader is congruent in their teachings. If I'm going to teach you how to be healthy physically, emotionally and spiritually, I better be demonstrating success in my own life.
Tool 2 - Serve
As a true leader, it is important to serve those around you, especially when it seems like a trivial task. The true leader serves in the background and does things people don't normally see.
As a leader always ask yourself, "Who can I serve today?". To get into the habit of thinking this, you may want to store an alarm in your phone that says this.
Tool 3 - Encourage
As a true leader, it is important to encourage those around him/her. People need to be praised when they're doing well. When followers are struggling, the leader is there to encourage them along to strive to be better. Also, if there is ever a communication break down, the communication has to be open enough to take over for the team member that is struggling, or holding onto a project too long. I've seen too many goals go down in flames because someone was too embarrassed to simply say, "Yo, I need some help with this."
Just a recap with the three tools that we have just learned to be great leaders:
Tool 1 - Lead from the front
Tool 2 - To serve, even when it seems like a trivial task.
Tool 3 - To encourage
Remember that we're all born to be leaders in our own ways. But we can be the leaders of change, not just for ourselves but also for our community. Leadership is selfless. It is passionate, collaborative and heartfelt.

I also tried staying in 1st person as much as possible as I understood most of you do prefer me being in first! (though following vids will be 80+% in first person!) This was a bit different from how we usually do it; this was more of a training excercise as the other Fireteam leader was new to it aswell as our Squad Leader.. Hope you enjoy and had a great weekend!
