Papworth Hospital is a heart and lung hospital in Cambridgeshire, England. It was home to the first successful heart transplant in the UK and one of the world's first beating-heart transplants. Papworth Hospital is due to move to new premises on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus in 2018.
The hospital was founded in 1917 as a sanitorium and hospital for the treatment of tuberculosis. From the 1950s, surgical facilities developed, beginning with thoracic (chest/lung) surgery and expanding to cardiac surgery. Today, Papworth is the UK's main heart/lung transplant centre.
Original historical documents relating to Papworth Hospital, the Village Settlement and the TB colony are today held by Cambridgeshire Archives and Local Studies at the County Record Office in Cambridge.
The Papworth site has two main building complexes: the main building (providing cardiology and all surgical services, together with the intensive care unit) and the Chest Medical Unit (providing respiratory medicine services). Subspecialities include:
A hospital is a health care institution providing patient treatment with specialized staff and equipment. The best-known type of hospital is the general hospital, which has an emergency department. A district hospital typically is the major health care facility in its region, with large numbers of beds for intensive care and long-term care. Specialised hospitals include trauma centres, rehabilitation hospitals, children's hospitals, seniors' (geriatric) hospitals, and hospitals for dealing with specific medical needs such as psychiatric problems (see psychiatric hospital) and certain disease categories. Specialised hospitals can help reduce health care costs compared to general hospitals.
A teaching hospital combines assistance to people with teaching to medical students and nurses. The medical facility smaller than a hospital is generally called a clinic. Hospitals have a range of departments (e.g., surgery, and urgent care) and specialist units such as cardiology. Some hospitals have outpatient departments and some have chronic treatment units. Common support units include a pharmacy, pathology, and radiology.
Papworth Hospital are pioneers of new and innovative medical and surgical procedures and treatments for the whole range of cardio and respiratory disorders. Papworth is a primary PCI centre, and the cardio dept. work very closely with the respiratory dept. to offer these new treatments. It will also focus on the future of cardio care which will be available at the new hospital which is currently being built, which will have resources and facilities to deal with both elective and emergency patients at the same time. http://www.papworthhospital.nhs.uk

Will removing the restrictions on nursing student places and NHS funded nursing bursaries and fees increase the supply of registered nurses in the UK? The Department of Health has published its intention to stop paying University fees and remove bursaries for nursing students in England from 2017 and state that this will remove the cap on the number of student places and therefore the supply of Registered Nurses. Nursing students would be able to apply for student loans to cover University fees and subsistence as students of other subjects do.
