Nirvana

Nirvāṇa (/nɪərˈvɑːnə, -ˈvænə, nər-/;Sanskrit: निर्वाण nirvāṇa  [nirʋaːɳə]; Pali: निब्बान nibbāna ; Prakrit: णिव्वाण ṇivvāṇa ) literally means "blown out", as in a candle. It is most commonly associated with Buddhism.

In the Buddhist context, nirvana refers to the imperturbable stillness of mind after the fires of desire, aversion, and delusion have been finally extinguished. In Hindu philosophy, it is the union with Brahman, the divine ground of existence, and the experience of blissful egolessness.

In Indian religions, the attainment of nirvana is moksha, liberation from samsara, the repeating cycle of birth, life and death.

Etymology

The word nirvāṇa is from the verbal root √vā “blow” in the form of past participle vāna “blown”, prefixed with the preverb nis meaning “out”. Hence the original meaning of the word is “blown out, extinguished”. Sandhi changes the spelling: the v of vāna causes nis to become nir, and then the r of nir causes retroflexion of the following n: nis+vāna > nirvāṇa. Nirvana (EP)

Nirvana is the debut extended play (EP) by English singer Sam Smith. It was released in the United Kingdom as a digital download on 4 October 2013. The EP includes an acoustic version of Disclosure's "Latch". "Safe with Me" peaked at number 86 and "Nirvana" peaked at number 82 on the UK Singles Chart in October 2013.

Background

The EP contains four tracks. The first, titled "Safe with Me", is produced by Two Inch Punch and premiered on MistaJam's BBC Radio 1Xtra show on 24 July 2013. The second song on the EP is titled "Nirvana" and is produced by Craze & Hoax and Jonathan Creek. The EP also includes Smith's acoustic solo version of "Latch" and a live version of "I've Told You Now". In an interview with BBC Radio 1 he said that the songs on the EP were "experimental" and would not appear on his debut album In the Lonely Hour.

Nirvana (Elbosco song)

"Nirvana" is a 1995 new-age song written and composed by Rojotua, Loxatus and C. Max and performed by the Spanish musical group Elbosco. The song became a world success and was also used by Danny Boyle in the 2004 film Millions.

The song contains some lyrics in Latin, sung by the choral group of the Escolanía del Real Monasterio of San Lorenzo and also English lyrics, all this combined with a techno and hip-hop feel.

Palladium (band)

Palladium were an English pop rock band, active from 2006 until early 2009. They are not to be confused with the Australian or American bands of the same name.

Career

The four members became acquaintances through various tours on the session musician circuit and played their first gig together under the moniker "The Peppernotes", at a Caribbean Restaurant dressed as Peter Pan in drag. Since then they changed their name to Palladium and played alongside Amy Winehouse, Alphabeat, Mika, The Thrills and The Kooks. They were signed to Virgin Records.

Palladium's debut single "Happy Hour" was released in July 2007. Their debut album, The Way It's Not, was recorded with Tony Hoffer in 2007.

Palladium announced via MySpace in November 2008 that problems with their record label would be leading to a hiatus, and in January 2009 announced via their blog that they would be splitting up. Band members Peter Pepper and Rostas Fez have since gone on to form a band named Soho Beach House.

Autopsia

Autopsia is an art project dealing with music and visual production. Autopsia gathers authors of different professions in realization of multimedia projects. Its art practice began in London in the late 1970s, continued during the 1980s in the art centers of former Yugoslavia. Since 1990, Autopsia has acted from Prague, Czech Republic. At the beginning of its activity, Autopsia issued dozens of MCs. In the period after 1989, twenty CDs were issued, at first for Staalplaat from Amsterdam, then for German label Hypnobeat and London's Gymnastic Records. One of its compositions is a part of the soundtrack for Peter Greenaway's The Pillow Book. Music production of Autopsia can be classified as experimental, breakcore, avant-garde, ambient, industrial; it's associated with a large graphic production which consists of original graphic objects, design of flyers, posters, booklets, CDs, experimental films and audio installations.

Palladium (classical antiquity)

In Greek and Roman mythology, the palladium or palladion was a cult image of great antiquity on which the safety of Troy and later Rome was said to depend, the wooden statue (xoanon) of Pallas Athena that Odysseus and Diomedes stole from the citadel of Troy and which was later taken to the future site of Rome by Aeneas. The Roman story is related in Virgil's Aeneid and other works.

In English, since around 1600, the word palladium has been used figuratively to mean anything believed to provide protection or safety, and in particular in Christian contexts a sacred relic or icon believed to have a protective role in military contexts for a whole city, people or nation. Such beliefs first become prominent in the Eastern church in the period after the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, and later spread to the Western church. Palladia were carried in procession around the walls of besieged cities and sometimes carried into battle.
