Al Khazneh, one of the ancient world's most magnificent ancient megastructures which humans display formidable resourcefulness and courageous endeavour to create. It was generally believed to be built between 100 BC and 200 AD. Petra is a historic and archaeological city in the Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that has rock cut architecture and water conduits system. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan as well as its most visited tourism attraction. It lies on the slope of Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah, the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in July 7, 2007 and a World Heritage Site since 1985. Petra was chosen by the BBC as one of "the 40 places you have to see before you die". The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. Stations 19 through 26 of the stations list of Exodus are places associated with Petra. (The stations list is the list of the 42 Stations or Mansions visited by the Israelites following their exodus from Egypt as described in the Bible). This part of the country was Biblically assigned to the Horites, the predecessors of the Edomites.

Archaeological reconstruction of the Ancient Nabataean Treasury of Petra, “Al Khazneh” situated in modern Jordan. One such example of heterogeneous cultural-dialogue without any imperial catalyst was this early Iron Age Nabataean site, located in the Eastern Mediterranean, circa 312bc-100ad. Whilst displaying overtly Greco-Roman architectural themes in addition to indigenous Semitic antecedents, this archaeological site was neither under official Hellenistic Seleucid rule nor annexed to Rome at the time of its main structural assemblage. Thus attests to the natural symbiotic relationship in transmission and creation of new cultural styles and ideologies amongst varied peoples, without need of imperial intervention. The Royal cut tombs in addition to the treasury of the Pharaoh “Al Khazneh el Faroun”, are a prime example of continuous cultural dialogue from the preceding Bronze Age onwards, and portrays here contextually how the upper strata of Nabataean society engaged in intercultural exchange through personal agency attempting to emulate popular style-typologies of the Eastern Mediterranean basin. Vast Corinthian columns dominate the façade of the treasury, inverted pediments atop the colonnade merge with indigenous urn-like domes with shallow reliefs - all sculpted in the soft red-stone of the topography of mountainous Petra, the celebrated indigenous Nabataean method of architectural design. All sculptures are based accurately on the original order of the "Amazonomachy" - sculptural reliefs based on the battle between mythic Amazon women and Ancient Greeks. This reconstruction is dedicated to archaeologist Dr Tim Reynolds and archaeologist Dr Caspar Meyer, both of whom are brilliant lecturers and equally influential in the epochs of prehistory and the Hellenistic Dynasty respectively. Al Khazneh ("The Treasury"; Arabic: الخزنة) is one of the most elaborate buildings in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra. As with most of the other buildings in this ancient town, the structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face. It has classical Greek-influenced architecture, and it is a popular tourist attraction.
It is unknown as why Al Khazneh was originally built, probably between 100 BC and 200 AD. Its Arabic name Treasury derives from one legend that bandits or pirates hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Significant damage from bullets can be seen on the urn. Local lore attributes this to Bedouins, who are said to have shot at the urn in hopes of breaking it open and spilling out the "treasure" within (the decorative urn, however, is solid sandstone). Another is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh of the time of Moses (Khaznet Far'oun).
Many of the building's architectural details have eroded away during the two thousand years since it was carved and sculpted from the cliff. Others have been defaced, likely by Muslims vandals after the Islamic Renaissance. The sculptures are those of various mythological figures associated with the afterlife.

The Siq (Arabic: السيق, transliterated al-Sīq, transcribed as-Sīq,[1] literally ‘the Shaft’) is the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan. The dim, narrow gorge (in some points no more than 3 metres (9.8 ft) wide) winds its way approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) and ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (the Treasury). A wide valley outside leading to the Siq is known as the Bab as-Sīq (Gateway to the Siq).
The entrance to the Siq contains a huge dam, reconstructed in 1963 and again in 1991, designed to bar the mouth of the Siq and reroute the waters of Wadi Musa. The dam is a fairly true reconstruction of what the Nabataeans did to control Wadi Musa between the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD. The entrance also contains the remnants of a monumental arch, of which only the two abutments and some hewn stones of the arch itself have survived. The arch collapsed in 1896 following an earthquake, but its appearance is known from the lithographs of Matthew Boulby and David Roberts.

Jordan's Petra is a fascinating ruins site, the capital of the Nabataeans that was cut into the sandstone walls of Jebel al-Madhbah. Later Roman and Byzantine rule left their mark here as well, resulting in today's extensive ruins.
Almost all visitors begin their visit with a walk or camel ride through Al Siq (also referred to as As Siq) to Petra's most famous ruin, Al Khazneh, also known as the Treasury. That's the subject of this slide show. But that provides just the introduction to this amazing site. I spent a full day at Petra and wish I had two, there's just that much to see here.
Wear good walking shoes. There's lot of walking and the surfaces are uneven.

The figures on the upper level are dancing Amazons with double-axes. The entrance is flanked by statues of the twins Castor and Pollux who lived partly on Olympus and partly in the underworld.

Archaeological reconstruction of the Ancient Nabataean Treasury of Petra, “Al Khazneh” situated in modern Jordan. One such example of heterogeneous cultural-dialogue without any imperial catalyst was this early Iron Age Nabataean site, located in the Eastern Mediterranean, circa 312bc-100ad. Whilst displaying overtly Greco-Roman architectural themes in addition to indigenous Semitic antecedents, this archaeological site was neither under official Hellenistic Seleucid rule nor annexed to Rome at the time of its main structural assemblage. Thus attests to the natural symbiotic relationship in transmission and creation of new cultural styles and ideologies amongst varied peoples, without need of imperial intervention. The Royal cut tombs in addition to the treasury of the Pharaoh “Al Khazneh el Faroun”, are a prime example of continuous cultural dialogue from the preceding Bronze Age onwards, and portrays here contextually how the upper strata of Nabataean society engaged in intercultural exchange through personal agency attempting to emulate popular style-typologies of the Eastern Mediterranean basin. Vast Corinthian columns dominate the façade of the treasury, inverted pediments atop the colonnade merge with indigenous urn-like domes with shallow reliefs - all sculpted in the soft red-stone of the topography of mountainous Petra, the celebrated indigenous Nabataean method of architectural design. All sculptures are based accurately on the original order of the "Amazonomachy" - sculptural reliefs based on the battle between mythic Amazon women and Ancient Greeks. This reconstruction is dedicated to archaeologist Dr Tim Reynolds and archaeologist Dr Caspar Meyer, both of whom are brilliant lecturers and equally influential in the epochs of prehistory and the Hellenistic Dynasty respectively. As with most of the other buildings in this ancient town, the structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face. It has classical Greek-influenced architecture, and it is a popular tourist attraction. It is unknown as why Al Khazneh was originally built, probably between 100 BC and 200 AD. Its Arabic name Treasury derives from one legend that bandits or pirates hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Significant damage from bullets can be seen on the urn. Local lore attributes this to Bedouins, who are said to have shot at the urn in hopes of breaking it open and spilling out the "treasure" within (the decorative urn, however, is solid sandstone). Another is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh of the time of Moses (Khaznet Far'oun). Many of the building's architectural details have eroded away during the two thousand years since it was carved and sculpted from the cliff. Others have been defaced, likely by Muslims vandals after the Islamic Renaissance. The sculptures are those of various mythological figures associated with the afterlife. -

The Siq (Arabic: السيق, transliterated al-Sīq, transcribed as-Sīq,[1] literally ‘the Shaft’) is the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan. The dim, narrow gorge (in some points no more than 3 metres (9.8 ft) wide) winds its way approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) and ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (the Treasury). A wide valley outside leading to the Siq is known as the Bab as-Sīq (Gateway to the Siq). The entrance to the Siq contains a huge dam, reconstructed in 1963 and again in 1991, designed to bar the mouth of the Siq and reroute the waters of Wadi Musa. The dam is a fairly true reconstruction of what the Nabataeans did to control Wadi Musa between the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD. The entrance also contains the remnants of a monumental arch, of which only the two abutments and some hewn stones of the arch itself have survived. The arch collapsed in 1896 following an earthquake, but its appearance is known from the lithographs of Matthew Boulby and David Roberts. Petra (Arabic: البتراء, Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα) is a historical and archaeological city in the southern Jordanian governorate of Ma'an that is famous for its rock-cut architecture and water conduit system. Another name for Petra is the Rose City due to the color of the stone out of which it is carved. Established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor) in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985. The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. Jordan's Petra is a fascinating ruins site, the capital of the Nabataeans that was cut into the sandstone walls of Jebel al-Madhbah. Later Roman and Byzantine rule left their mark here as well, resulting in today's extensive ruins. Almost all visitors begin their visit with a walk or camel ride through Al Siq (also referred to as As Siq) to Petra's most famous ruin, Al Khazneh, also known as the Treasury. That's the subject of this slide show. But that provides just the introduction to this amazing site. I spent a full day at Petra and wish I had two, there's just that much to see here. Wear good walking shoes. There's lot of walking and the surfaces are uneven. The Photos (in order) M11A3861 - Bab as-Siq, or the Gateway to the Siq, features a number of Nabataean ruins, including the Obelisk Tomb M11A3886 - Al Siq is a natural split in the rock that has been eroded into a deep, narrow canyon; in places it is a little as 13 feet wide and almost 600 feet deep; it serves as the main entrance to Petra; note the remnants of an old arch on the canyon walls above the entrance M11A3930 - Parts of the walk through Al Siq will use the old paved Roman Road M11A3944 - Keep an eye out for carvings along the canyon walls; some are in good shape; others, like this man leading some camels, have steadily eroded away M11A3950 - Note the channel carved into the wall along the way; this was used to carry water through Al Siq into the Nabataean city M11A3967 - As you near the end of Al Siq, Al Khazneh dramatically comes into view; the morning sun iluminates the facade of Al Khazneh, increasing the contrast with the shadowy Al Siq M11A3976 - Al Khazneh, or The Treasury M11A4007 - Visitors can hire camels and guides as an alternative to walking; as the walk into Petra is downhill, visitors are more likely to opt for a buggy ride on their way back up and out -

One such example of heterogeneous cultural-dialogue without any imperial catalyst was this early Iron Age Nabataean site, located in the Eastern Mediterranean, circa 312bc-100ad. Whilst displaying overtly Greco-Roman architectural themes in addition to indigenous Semitic antecedents, this archaeological site was neither under official Hellenistic Seleucid rule nor annexed to Rome at the time of its main structural assemblage. The Siq (Arabic: السيق, transliterated al-Sīq, transcribed as-Sīq,[1] literally ‘the Shaft’) is the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan. The dim, narrow gorge (in some points no more than 3 metres (9.8 ft) wide) winds its way approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) and ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (the Treasury). A wide valley outside leading to the Siq is known as the Bab as-Sīq (Gateway to the Siq). The entrance to the Siq contains a huge dam, reconstructed in 1963 and again in 1991, designed to bar the mouth of the Siq and reroute the waters of Wadi Musa. Jordan's Petra is a fascinating ruins site, the capital of the Nabataeans that was cut into the sandstone walls of Jebel al-Madhbah. Later Roman and Byzantine rule left their mark here as well, resulting in today's extensive ruins. Almost all visitors begin their visit with a walk or camel ride through Al Siq (also referred to as As Siq) to Petra's most famous ruin, Al Khazneh, also known as the Treasury. That's the subject of this slide show. But that provides just the introduction to this amazing site. I spent a full day at Petra and wish I had two, there's just that much to see here. It is unknown as to why or exactly when Al Khazneh was originally built, probably between 100 BC and AD 200.[1] Its Arabic name Treasury derives from one legend that bandits or pirates hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Significant damage from bullets can be seen on the urn. Local lore attributes this to Bedouins, who are said to have shot at the urn in hopes of breaking it open and spilling out the "treasure"—but the decorative urn is in fact solid sandstone). Another is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh at the time of Moses (Khaznet Far'oun).[2] Many of the building's architectural details have eroded away during the two thousand years since it was carved and sculpted from the cliff. Archaeological reconstruction of the Ancient Nabataean Treasury of Petra, “Al Khazneh” situated in modern Jordan. One such example of heterogeneous cultural-dialogue without any imperial catalyst was this early Iron Age Nabataean site, located in the Eastern Mediterranean, circa 312bc-100ad. Whilst displaying overtly Greco-Roman architectural themes in addition to indigenous Semitic antecedents, this archaeological site was neither under official Hellenistic Seleucid rule nor annexed to Rome at the time of its main structural assemblage. Thus attests to the natural symbiotic relationship in transmission and creation of new cultural styles and ideologies amongst varied peoples, without need of imperial intervention. The Royal cut tombs in addition to the treasury of the Pharaoh “Al Khazneh el Faroun”, are a prime example of continuous cultural dialogue from the preceding Bronze Age onwards, and portrays here contextually how the upper strata of Nabataean society engaged in intercultural exchange through personal agency attempting to emulate popular style-typologies of the Eastern Mediterranean basin. Vast Corinthian columns dominate the façade of the treasury, inverted pediments atop the colonnade merge with indigenous urn-like domes with shallow reliefs - all sculpted in the soft red-stone of the topography of mountainous Petra, the celebrated indigenous Nabataean method of architectural design. All sculptures are based accurately on the original order of the "Amazonomachy" - sculptural reliefs based on the battle between mythic Amazon women and Ancient Greeks. This reconstruction is dedicated to archaeologist Dr Tim Reynolds and archaeologist Dr Caspar Meyer, both of whom are brilliant lecturers and equally influential in the epochs of prehistory and the Hellenistic Dynasty respectively. Al Khazneh ("The Treasury"; Arabic: الخزنة) is one of the most elaborate buildings in the ancient Jordanian city of Petra. As with most of the other buildings in this ancient town, the structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face. It has classical Greek-influenced architecture, and it is a popular tourist attraction.
It is unknown as why Al Khazneh was originally built, probably between 100 BC and 200 AD. Its Arabic name Treasury derives from one legend that bandits or pirates hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Significant damage from bullets can be seen on the urn. Local lore attributes this to Bedouins, who are said to have shot at the urn in hopes of breaking it open and spilling out the "treasure" within (the decorative urn, however, is solid sandstone). Another is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh of the time of Moses (Khaznet Far'oun).
Many of the building's architectural details have eroded away during the two thousand years since it was carved and sculpted from the cliff. Others have been defaced, likely by Muslims vandals after the Islamic Renaissance. The sculptures are those of various mythological figures associated with the afterlife.

The Siq (Arabic: السيق, transliterated al-Sīq, transcribed as-Sīq,[1] literally ‘the Shaft’) is the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra in southern Jordan. The dim, narrow gorge (in some points no more than 3 metres (9.8 ft) wide) winds its way approximately 1.2 kilometres (0.75 mi) and ends at Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (the Treasury). A wide valley outside leading to the Siq is known as the Bab as-Sīq (Gateway to the Siq).
The entrance to the Siq contains a huge dam, reconstructed in 1963 and again in 1991, designed to bar the mouth of the Siq and reroute the waters of Wadi Musa. The dam is a fairly true reconstruction of what the Nabataeans did to control Wadi Musa between the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD. The entrance also contains the remnants of a monumental arch, of which only the two abutments and some hewn stones of the arch itself have survived. The arch collapsed in 1896 following an earthquake, but its appearance is known from the lithographs of Matthew Boulby and David Roberts.

It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor) in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812, when it was introduced by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. It was described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate Prize-winning poem by John William Burgon. Jordan's Petra is a fascinating ruins site, the capital of the Nabataeans that was cut into the sandstone walls of Jebel al-Madhbah. Later Roman and Byzantine rule left their mark here as well, resulting in today's extensive ruins.
Almost all visitors begin their visit with a walk or camel ride through Al Siq (also referred to as As Siq) to Petra's most famous ruin, Al Khazneh, also known as the Treasury. That's the subject of this slide show. But that provides just the introduction to this amazing site. I spent a full day at Petra and wish I had two, there's just that much to see here.
Wear good walking shoes. There's lot of walking and the surfaces are uneven.

It is unknown as to why or exactly when Al Khazneh was originally built, probably between 100 BC and AD 200.[1] Its Arabic name Treasury derives from one legend that bandits or pirates hid their loot in a stone urn high on the second level. Significant damage from bullets can be seen on the urn. Local lore attributes this to Bedouins, who are said to have shot at the urn in hopes of breaking it open and spilling out the "treasure"—but the decorative urn is in fact solid sandstone). Another is that it functioned as a treasury of the Egyptian Pharaoh at the time of Moses (Khaznet Far'oun).[2]
Many of the building's architectural details have eroded away during the two thousand years since it was carved and sculpted from the cliff. The sculptures are thought to be those of various mythological figures associated with the afterlife.[3] On top are figures of four eagles that would carry away the souls. The figures on the upper level are dancing Amazons with double-axes. The entrance is flanked by statues of the twins Castor and Pollux who lived partly on Olympus and partly in the underworld.
There are burial chambers on either side of a ramp which were added in 1938.

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

1. Not only is the Kingdom considered the safest country in the Middle East, but also considered as the safest Arab country. In midst of surrounding turmoil it has been greatly hospitable, accepting refugees from almost all surrounding conflicts as early as 1948, with most notably the estimated 2 million Palestinian refugees and the 1.5 million Syrian refugees residing in the country.
2. Al Khazne is one of the most elaborate temples in the ancient Arab Nabatean Kingdom city of Petra. As with most of the other buildings in this ancient town, including the Monastery (Arabic: Ad Deir), this structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face. It is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
3. According to the final chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses ascended Mount Nebo to view the Land of Israel, that he was commanded by God to not enter, and to die; he was buried in an unknown valley location in Moab (Deuteronomy 34). According to Christian tradition, Moses was buried on the mountain, although his place of burial is not specified.(Deuteronomy 34:6) Some Islamic traditions also stated the same.
4. Amman – the capital of Jordan – was once called Philadelphia. Ptolemy II Philadelphus, the Macedonian ruler of Egypt, who occupied and rebuilt the city, named it "Philadelphia", which means "brotherly love" in Greek. The history of Amman dates back to 7250 BC, which makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. First inhabitance was in a Neolithic village called 'Ain Ghazal.
5. King Abdullah II of Jordan is a military man. He started as a second lieutenant in the British Army, in 1980, returned to Jordan in 1985 to join the Armored Corps and the Special Forces, where he became skilled as a Cobra attack helicopter pilot. In 1993 he became commander of Jordan's Special Forces and in 1998 he was promoted to major general. He comes from 41st generation of direct descendants of the Prophet Mohammad.
6. The Wadi Rum consists of 720 sq. km of desert wilderness. Wadi Rum has featured heavily in many mainstream movies, such as the famed Lawrence of Arabia (1962), or Red Planet (2000), where it was used to replicate the surface of Mars. The red color of the mountains and sand in the valley is due to the presence of iron oxide.
7. In 1950 Jordan annexed the West Bank, during the Arab-Israeli War. But in 1967 Israel takes control of the West Bank, during the Six Day War. Jordan remained in an official state of war with Israel for 46 years, until 1994. In 1991, at the Madrid Conference, Jordan agreed to negotiate on a peace treaty sponsored by the US and the Soviet Union. It negotiated an end to hostilities with Israel and signed a declaration known as the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty 26 October 1994.

Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Travelers have fascinating places to explore here, including the breathtaking 2,000-year-old Treasury, the narrow Siq gorge (the main entrance to Petra), and the High Place of Sacrifice.

The Monastery (ad-Deir), the largest carved monument in Petra, dates back to the 1st century AD. The interior, like that of the Treasury, is puny in comparison to the facade. The more than 800 steps up to the Monastery can take over an hour.
Princess Alia Clinic, Brooke Hospital for Animals located just inside the entrance to the park.
The entrance to Petra is a long, winding sandstone canyon known as the Siq (about 2km). There are minor carvings spotted here and there throughout the Siq, but the most impressive sights are the colorful and unusual sandstone patterns in the rock walls. There are also remains of terracotta pipes built into the sides of the canyon that were used in Roman times to carry water.
Upon exiting the Siq, visitors can view the jaw-dropping grandeur of the Treasury (al-Khazneh in Arabic). Be sure to note the urn atop the Treasury structure. It has been rumored that the urn contained a Pharaoh's hidden treasure, and the urn bears the bullet pock marks where Bedouin travellers throughout the years have tested the theory. Get there when the park opens at 6AM or 6:30AM (depending on the season) and you may have the Treasury all to yourself or with less than 5-10 people around.
Past the next bend is the outer Siq or Street of Facades, a large canyon lined with the facades of various tombs.
At the end of the Street of Facades is the 7000-seat Roman Theater. The theater was created by the Nabateans but later enlarged by the Romans. It is still used for occasional performances.
On the side of the valley opposite the Roman Theater and a short walk up the hill, are the Royal Tombs. The name was given because they are quite grand in scale compared to the others in the area, but it is unclear for whom the tombs were originally constructed.

Petra was the impressive capital of the Nabataean kingdom from around the 6th century BC. The kingdom was absorbed into the Roman Empire in AD 106 and the Romans continued to expand the city. An important center for trade and commerce, Petra continued to flourish until a catastrophic earthquake destroyed buildings and crippled vital water management systems around AD 663. After Saladin's conquest of the Middle East in 1189, Petra was abandoned and the memory of it was lost to the West.
The ruins remained hidden to most of the world until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised as an Arab scholar, infiltrated the Bedouin-occupied city in 1812. Burckhardt's accounts of his travels inspired other Western explorers and historians to discover the ancient city further. The most famous of these was David Roberts, a Scottish artist who created accurate and detailed illustrations of the city in 1839.

Despite its modern spirit, Amman is one if the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. It was the capital of the Ammonites, and it is referred to as Rabbath-Ammon in the Old Testament. Rebuilt during the Hellenistic and Roman periods the city was renamed Philadelphia by Ptolemy II. in 63 B.C. In 106 AD, the Roman Emperor Trajan built a new road from Eilat to Damascus which ran through Philadelphia. This created an economic boom for the city. Later, during the Byzantine Period, the city was home to bishop and several churches in the early 7th Century. In the early Islamic Era the city was named Amman and important through its location on trade routes and for its strategic military position. In the 10th century the city declined. In 1921 the Emir of Transjordan Abdullah bin Hussein moved his capital to Amman.

Petra (from πέτρα "petra", rock in Greek; Arabic: البتراء, Al-Butrā) is an archaeological site in Jordan, lying in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is famous for having many stone structures carved into the rock. The long-hidden site was revealed to the Western world by the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812. It was famously described as "a rose-red city half as old as time" in a Newdigate prize-winning sonnet by John William Burgon. Burgon had not actually visited Petra, which remained accessible only to Europeans accompanied by local guides with armed escorts, until after World War I.
Geography
Rekem is an ancient name for Petra and appears in Dead Sea scrolls such as 4Q462 associated with Mount Seir. Additionally, Eusebius and Jerome (Onom. sacr. 286, 71. 145, 9; 228, 55. 287, 94) assert that Rekem was the native name of Petra, supposedly on the authority of Josephus (Antiquities iv. 7, 1~ 4, 7), Pliny the Elder and other writers identify Petra as the capital of the Nabataeans, Aramaic-speaking Semites, and the centre of their caravan trade. Enclosed by towering rocks and watered by a perennial stream, Petra not only possessed the advantages of a fortress but controlled the main commercial routes which passed through it to Gaza in the west, to Bosra and Damascus in the north, to Aqaba and Leuce Come on the Red Sea, and across the desert to the Persian Gulf.
Excavations have demonstrated that it was the ability of the Nabateans to control the water supply that led to the rise of the desert city, in effect creating an artificial oasis. The area is visited by flash floods and archaeological evidence demonstrates the Nabateans controlled these floods by the use of dams, cisterns and water conduits. Thus, stored water could be employed even during prolonged periods of drought, and the city prospered from its sale.
Although in ancient times Petra might have been approached from the south (via Saudi Arabia on a track leading around Jabal Haroun, Aaron's Mountain, on across the plain of Petra), or possibly from the high plateau to the north, most modern visitors approach the ancient site from the east. The impressive eastern entrance leads steeply down through a dark and narrow gorge (in places only 3-4 metres wide) called the Siq (the shaft), a natural geological feature formed from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and serving as a waterway flowing into Wadi Musa. At the end of the narrow gorge stands Petra's most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh ("the Treasury") hewn directly out of the sandstone cliff.
A little farther from the Treasury, at the foot of the mountain called en-Nejr is a massive theatre, so placed as to bring the greatest number of tombs within view; and at the point where the valley opens out into the plain the site of the city is revealed with striking effect. Indeed, the amphitheatre has actually been cut into the hillside and into several of the tombs during its construction, rectangular gaps in the seating are still visible. Almost enclosing it on three sides are rose-coloured mountain walls, divided into groups by deep fissures, and lined with tombs cut from the rock in the form of towers.
