How to incorporate decking into a small outdoor space

Decking

Having a small space doesn’t have to mean missing out on a deck. Whether you DIY or hire a decking expert, there are some clever tricks to try when building a petite deck.

1 Know what you need

Building a deck in a little yard is all about being savvy with space. You might want to leave room for plants and water features, a garden path, or vegetable patch. So before you do anything else, draw up a plan and play around with arranging the deck and other essential elements. Show this to a professional to ensure you have the measurements, ratios, and placements correct.

Also think about how you’ll use the space. Do you have a growing family and need a deck as an additional eating or play space? Do you entertain often? Will you need space for a barbie or sink – or do you just need a deck for relaxing? And remember to take into account future buyers of your home too; their needs might be different.

2 Keep it in proportion

The size of your deck will affect the look and function of your outdoor space. If it’s too tiny, it will look odd and out of place. Too big and it will swamp the surrounding space and look squeezed in. Refer back to your plans to ensure the proportions will be just right.

3 Blend well

Also think about how your deck will fit with the main house. It should seamlessly synchronise with your home, and not catch the eye for the wrong reasons. This means using materials and colours that blend with the rest of the house – especially if the deck will be attached to the indoor space, acting as a transition.

4 Storage solutions

A deck can act as an additional storage space for garden gear, outdoor cooking supplies, play equipment and toys, and more. This is key to keeping the small area uncluttered and clear. So think of ways to incorporate storage – such as benches, under-deck doors, and cabinets.

5 Double duty

The deck railing can also act as storage, by extending onto the wall as a shelf. Perfect for placing a cup of tea for an afternoon in the soft sun.

6 Look for levels

Make a small deck even bigger with levels and steps. For instance, a split-level deck allows for separate areas – for instance, keeping the kids’ corner away from the entertaining spot. Levels are also ideal when you have a tricky landscape to work with, while also providing extra seating along the raised edge.
