7 Foot Shark swam up on all of us while we were swimming in the shallow waters of Grace Bay Beach Turks and Caicos Islands. He seamed more curios than anything else. We were extremely surprised for the water was very shallow and just a few feet from the shoreline. We were all very grateful for other beach goers who gave a "SHOUT" when anything alarming is in the area. Nice to know that we all look after one another. Seams to be the island way. Unfortunately, not everyone was able to get out of the water before he made his way through so they just stood very still. Smart move. He just swam along without bothering anyone. The funny thing is... It's Shark week!

In 1962, John Glenn's Friendship 7 Mercury spacecraft landed in the vicinity of Grand Turk Island off the southeast shoreline. A replica of the Friendship 7 is on display in Grand Turk at the entrance to the Grand Turk Island airport, JAGS McCartney International Airport.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory consisting of two groups of tropical islands in the Caribbean, the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands, known for tourism and as an offshore financial centre. The Turks and Caicos Islands lie southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas island chain and north of the island of Hispaniola. Cockburn Town, the capital since 1766, is situated on Grand Turk Island about 1,042 kilometres (647 mi) east-southeast of Miami in the United States. The islands have a total land area of 430 square kilometres (170 sq mi). The islands are geographically contiguous to the Bahamas, but are politically a separate entity. The total population is about 45,000, of whom approximately 22,500 live on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands. In August 2009, the United Kingdom suspended the Turks and Caicos' self-government after allegations of ministerial corruption. Made up of over forty islands and cays, with only eight being inhabited, the name Turks is derived after the indigenous Turk's Head "fez" cactus and the name Caicos is a Lucayan term cay hico, meaning string of islands. The islands are geographically part of the southeastern Bahamas archipelago and is actually on a plateau of limestone that plummets to over 8,000 ft. The abysmally deep, 22-mile-wide Columbus Passage separates the Turks Islands from the Caicos Islands, thus forming an ideal area for the movement of migrating humpback whales to the Silver Bank in winter. This topography also enables some of the most awesome wall dives along Grand Turk and Salt Cay with infinite visibility. With over 230 miles of white-sand beaches and captivating blue water, the Turks and Caicos Islands is as beautiful above as it is underwater. The main diving areas are located on the Northwest Point, West Caicos, Grace Bay, Grand Turk and Salt Cay.
