Places to travel: Guadeloupe - Caribbean Moments
The two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre form the French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe like two butterfly wings, separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery.
Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, and the Îles des Saintes.
When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1463, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848.
The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean.
Gwoka is the traditional music on Guadeloupe, but not only music and danse, but also the joy of life and a reminder of the time of slavery
-------
Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.
This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.
In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.
The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

Cuba Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations
Cuba is the pearl of the Caribbean Sea. Thanks to the colonial past, Havana - the capital - has plenty of palaces, nice mansions, cathedrals, strong forts, and shady alleys. On the streets the automobiles of the 50’s from United States create a huge contrast with the coaches. Trinidad is full of palaces built by the sugar barons, while Santa Clara is the town of the legendary revolutionary, Che Guevara. Guama shows us an Indian village and a crocodile farm, Varadero offers white, sandy beaches shaded by large palm trees and luxury hotels. In the Tropicana, the band is moving to a heartwarming music. In the famous bars, as the Floridita or the Bodaguita, we can remember Hemingway, and drink from the local rum or the cocktails prepared from it, moreover we can light a good Cuban cigar as well.

Cesar Ayala analyzes and compares the explosive growth of sugar production in the three nations following the War of 1898--when the U.S. acquired Cuba and Puerto Rico--to show how closely the development of the Spanish Caribbean's mode

The True Pirates (Buccaneers) of the Caribbean
True Caribbean Pirates is a documentary which aired on The History Channel in 2006.

In the days of pirates and treasures, privateering was used to fight battles and disrupt the Spanish without having to pay for real navy within the Caribbean. Privateers were known to disrupt commerce and take part in the disruption of the en

Caribbean nations have ended their five day summit in the Dominican Republic by signing a trade pact which will double their trade markets.
The summit also marked the recognition of Cuban President Fidel Castro as an elder statesman as well as the wish from member countries to include Cuba in the Caribbean union.
A growing antipathy towards the United States, which is increasingly seen as neglecting the region on trade and aid issues since the end of the Cold War, was a major issue at the summit as well as the nations' desire to establish a trade agreement with Europe.

American Sugar Kingdom by César J. Ayala Ebook PDF

Author: César J. Ayala
Publish: 2009-11-15
Engaging conventional arguments that the persistence of plantations is the cause of economic underdevelopment in the Caribbean, this book focuses on the discontinuities in the development of plantation economies in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic in the early twentieth century. Cesar Ayala analyzes and compares the explosive growth of sugar production in the three nations following the War of 1898--when the U.S. acquired Cuba and Puerto Rico--to show how closely the development of the Spanish Caribbean's modern economic and social class systems is linked to the history of the U.S. sugar industry during its greatest period of expansion and consolidation. Ayala examines patterns of investment and principal groups of investors, interactions between U.S. capitalists and native planters, contrasts between new and old regions of sugar monoculture, the historical formation of the working class on sugar plantations, and patterns of labor migration. In contrast to most studies of the Spanish Caribbean, which focus on only one country, his account places the history of U.S. colonialism in the region, and the history of plantation agriculture across the region, in comparative perspective.

The True Pirates (Buccaneers) of the Caribbean
True Caribbean Pirates is a documentary which aired on The History Channel in 2006.
The documentary tells about pirates of the Caribbean such as Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, Anne Bonny and Black Bart Roberts. Larger than life, more dangerous than legend - pirates and buccaneers set sail for plunder. True Caribbean Pirates recreates the rise of piracy in the Caribbean and its climactic, inevitable downfall.
In the days of pirates and treasures, privateering was used to fight battles and disrupt the Spanish without having to pay for real navy within the Caribbean. Privateers were known to disrupt commerce and take part in the disruption of the enemies warships to protect trade against raiders.
Sir Henry Morgan- played by Lance J.Holt was one of the most famous privateers to cross the Caribbean land was known for his ruthless acts against Spanish colonies and was successful through his ways to bring down them down through his brutal acts. The privateer turned pirate was most notorious for his two most famous attacks on Porto Bello and Panama. Porto Bello was targeted by Morgan due to it being the third most relevant Spanish city in regards to its saturation of warehouses that stored the riches discovered by Spanish colonies. Morgan and his men then went to capture Panama where they were much more capable of destruction compared to the opposing Spanish attackers. Sir Henry Morgan died unlike many other pirates- dying from what may have been tuberculosis and was buried Palisades cemetery.
Blackbeard, who is played by Patrick Lander- earned his stripes by attacking Spanish ships during the Spanish Succession and to withhold the stolen goods which transformed him into an experienced sea robber, allowing him to join a group of Caribbean Pirates. Many stories have been retold time and time again about Blackbeard’s capturing ships with hostages and bribing them with their lives in turn for favors to benefit his conquests. The fearful pirate was finally taken down by an opposing ship during a vigorous battle and was then decapitated as a reward for the opposing pirates.
True Caribbean Pirates captures the events and tales of piracy that were said to take place in the Caribbean during the time when Christopher Columbus made his landing in the West Indies during 1492. Within this time, the land of the Caribbean had attracted the attention of many but was dominated by Spain; as they mined plenty of riches and gold out of the region. This drew attention to the land and disruptions arose- creating chaos in the new world. Regions such as Holland, England and France all began to send privateers into the land so they could to- establish a presence.
Calico Jack- a pirate played by David Joseph Boyd was a pirate who conducted his operations in the Bahamas and Cuba was not as successful in his missions as the former two pirates mentioned and was mostly known for his relations with the two female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, who served under his command. This pirate’s most successful prize- Kingston did not remain long in his power and therefore had left the pirate with little to be proud of. Jack’s legacy would not have been much had it not been for Bonny and Read. He was brought to his death after him and his crew were captured in Jamaica, tried and hung on November 28, 1720.

This is how the United States were born. It is in their nature. Let's hope they change someday. We want them to change and that in that great territory, in that great country, democracy truly flourishes and they finally learn to respect the sovereignty of other countries, their independence and peace. STORYLINE:
Heads of state and ministers representing 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations attended the opening of a two-day summit in Caracas on Friday.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is hosting the meeting of a new regional bloc: the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (known by its Spanish acronym CELAC).
Chavez said he hopes it acts as a counterweight to United States and Canada and put an end to Washington's hegemonic influence in the American continent.
"The then president, it was 1823, James Monroe launched this thesis: America for the Americans (he says this in English). Already before that, Jefferson (US president Thomas Jefferson) had said that the destiny of the US would be to swallow one by one all the old Spanish colonies. This is how the United States were born. It is in their nature. Let's hope they change someday," Chavez said during his speech.
The summit was Chavez's international debut after months of cancer treatment that forced him to postpone the meeting originally scheduled for July.
The 33-nation bloc, known by its Spanish initials CELAC, includes every country in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Unlike the Washington-based Organisation of American States, or OAS, it will have Cuba as a full member and will exclude the US and Canada.

STORYLINE
High-ranking officials from 42 anti-drug bodies across Latin America and the Caribbean region met in Lima on Monday to elaborate and coordinate a regional intelligence plan against trafficking.
Peruvian President Alan Garcia, who hosted the event, gave an opening in speech in which he urged the different anti-drug law enforcement agencies to coordinate and share "intelligence efforts".
"Sometimes what the police of one country doesn't know, the police in another country does. We have to have more links in the intelligence sector," Garcia said.
Garcia also addressed the issue of drugs legalisation and declared himself "totally against it".
After the opening session, Garcia toured the venue and visited stands where cocoa beans and all products derived from it were displayed.
Cocoa is one of the alternative crops offered to coca leaf farmers in the Andean and Peruvian Amazon regions.
The summit, the 20th of its kind, is a United Nations forum that meets annually, and will close next Thursday.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: CARIBBEAN NATIONS SUMMIT CLOSING CEREMONY
Spanish/Nat
Caribbean nations have ended their five day summit in the Dominican Republic by signing a trade pact which will double their trade markets.
The summit also marked the recognition of Cuban President Fidel Castro as an elder statesman as well as the wish from member countries to include Cuba in the Caribbean union.
A growing antipathy towards the United States, which is increasingly seen as neglecting the region on trade and aid issues since the end of the Cold War, was a major issue at the summit as well as the nations' desire to establish a trade agreement with Europe.
The Cuban President Fidel Castro won another regional victory when he was a guest at the Caribbean summit of nations in the Dominican Republic.
It is Castro's first official visit to the Dominican Republic since he seized power in Cuba in 1959.
It's also the first time he has participated in the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) summits.
A CARICOM free trade accord, signed on Saturday, will eventually remove most tariffs between the Caribbean Community - whose 15 nations have a combined population of 14 (m) million.
The trade agreement was timed to coincide with negotiations for a free trade zone encompassing the entire Western Hemisphere by 2005.
The formerly insular Dominican Republic is trying to become a linchpin of the Americas through its Hispanic culture, Caribbean location, and ties to the United States where more than one (m)million Dominicans live.
The ambitious Dominican President, Leonel Fernandez, has seized a leading role in the unprecedented Caribbean embrace of Castro - a once avowed enemy of more conservative predecessors.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"This accord represents the second link in the chain of free trade that we have committed to achieve in our hemisphere and at the same time it represents the triumph of Caribbean solidarity"
SUPER CAPTION: Leone Fernandez, Dominican President
Castro, largely isolated from his neighbours since seizing power in 1959, ended a triumphant tour three weeks ago that took him to Jamaica, Barbados and Grenada.
His newfound acceptance results in part from Caribbean frustration with U-S policy perceived as lacking leadership, vision and generosity.
U-S aid to the region has dropped 25 percent over the past five years, to 137 (m)million U-S dollars last year.
Meanwhile, Cuba has increased its donations to the region to an estimated 20 (m)million U-S dollars and handed out hundreds of scholarships at Cuban universities.
It was a universal agreement among the Caribbean nations at the summit that Cuba was a necessary link in their chain.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"It is evident that due to geographical, historical and cultural reasons Cuba is part of the Caribbean region and we could not have held an event of this nature without Cuba"
SUPER CAPTION: Leone Fernandez, Dominican President
The CARICOM leaders issued a declaration at the end of the summit expressing deep
disappointment that the United States failed to make good on President Clinton's promises to extend the same preferences for Caribbean textiles as those enjoyed by Mexico under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
The statement - a clear challenge to the U-S embargo of Cuba - extended a warm hand of friendship to Cuba and underscored the significance of Castro's participation at the summit.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"Cuba has been participating as an observer in this event therefore we cannot predict the future of U-S foreign policy towards Cuba, the only thing we can say is that there is no connection between what we have done today and what the future of U-S policy may be"
SUPER CAPTION: Leone Fernandez, Dominican President
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"They hit me, they hit me.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: SUMMIT OF ASSOCIATION OF CARIBBEAN STATES
Spanish/Nat
Leaders of 21 Caribbean nations including Mexico, Cuba, Colombia and Venezuela have gathered at a summit taking aim at trade reform for the diverse region.
The second summit of the 25-nation Association of Caribbean States will try to forge a unified trade strategy as well as promote the region's U-S 18 (b) billion dollar tourism industry.
Leaders will also discuss cooperation in transportation, drug-trafficking and hurricanes and other disasters.
The weekend conference of the Association of Caribbean States kicked off on Friday night with a banquet attended by 21 leaders including Cuba's Fidel Castro, Colombia's Andres Pastrana and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez.
President Pastrana called for stronger cooperation ties in trade, tourism and the fight against drug trafficking.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
"It's important to find a mechanism of cooperation in the region. The important goals of the Caribbean basin countries are to increase trade, investments, to deepen financial and tourism contacts, to strengthen cooperation in issues of mutual interest such as tourism, the environment, and the worldwide problem of drugs."
SUPER CAPTION: Andres Pastrana, President of Colombia
On their second official day, the leaders will come up with a strategy on the future Free Trade Area of the Americas.
The Association of Caribbean States pledge closer cooperation in promoting tourism, responding to natural disasters and fortifying the tenuous air and sea transportation links for the region.
The A-C-S consists of all the Caribbean islands and nations with Caribbean coastline.
That includes Central America and Latin America's so-called "Group of Three" - Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico.
Cuban leader Fidel Castro was expected to continue his efforts to mediate an end to Colombia's decades-old conflict.
Hugo Chavez of Venezuela has also become increasingly involved in trying to negotiate an end to his neighbour's conflict and provided a refuge for Colombian rebel negotiators.
Chavez and Pastrana are expected to meet privately during the conference.
Caribbean democracies no longer fear reprisals from Washington as they reach out to Castro, hoping for extra muscle in upcoming talks with European trading partners.
The member states as a whole have a population of more than 200 (m) million and a U-S 500 (b) billion dollar gross domestic product.
But officials say the region's development is hampered by frequent natural disasters and a need for better transportation links.
Last year, the devastating hurricane season killed nine-and-a-half thousand people,
caused U-S (b) billions of dollars in damage and set back Honduran and Nicaraguan development by decades.

STORYLINE
Top leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Latin America ended their meetings in Havana on Friday with a news conference to introduce the new board of directors that will run their organisation for the next four years.
Sixty-eight cardinals, bishops and religious leaders from Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean, including special invitees from Germany and the United States, elected a new president for the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) during four days of closed-door discussions.
The conference's new president, Brazilian Dom Raymundo Damasceno Assis, Archbishop of Apararecida, met with foreign journalists accredited in Cuba at the St. John Vianney Church and Monastery where the four-day conference was held.
Damasceno Assis was accompanied by his newly elected board of directors consisting of Venezuelan Bishop and Vice President of CELAM, Monsignor Baltazar Porras, Argentine Bishop and second Vice-President, Monsignor Andres Stanovnik, and Cuban Bishop and President of CELAM's Economic Committee, Monsignor Emilio Aranguren.
"We have a plan of work, or at least a conclusive document which should inspire us to do the projects of CELAM for the next four years", said Monsignor Damasceno Assis.
Latin American bishops drafted an original version of the document during a 19-day conference inaugurated by the Pope Benedict in Brazil's holy shrine city of Aparecida in May.
In a brief letter approving the statement's publication after a series of corrections, Benedict said its conclusions constituted "a rich reflection in the light of the faith and the current social context."
Radio and television stations are state-run and access to the internet and most new forms of technology are restricted.

Jamaica is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean.[5]
Once a Spanish possession known as Santiago, in 1655 it came under the rule of England (later Great Britain), and was called Jamaica. It achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on 6 August 1962.[6] With 2.8 million people, it is the third most populous Anglophone country in the Americas, after the United States and Canada. Kingston is the country's largest city and its capital, with a population of 937,700.[7][8] Jamaica has a large diaspora around the world, due to emigration from the country.[9]
Jamaica is a Commonwealth realm, with Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch and head of state. Her appointed representative in the country is the Governor-General of Jamaica, currently Patrick Allen. The head of government and Prime Minister of Jamaica is Portia Simpson-Miller. Jamaica is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with legislative power vested in the bicameral Parliament of Jamaica, consisting of an appointed Senate and a directly elected House of RepresentativesThe Arawak and Taino indigenous people, originating in South America, settled on the island between 4000 and 1000 BC.[17] When Christopher Columbus arrived in 1494, there were more than 200 villages ruled by caciques (chiefs of villages). The south coast of Jamaica was the most populated, especially around the area now known as Old Harbour.[17] The Taino still inhabited Jamaica when the English took control of the island in 1655.[17] The Jamaican National Heritage Trust is attempting to locate and document any evidence of the Taino/Arawaks.[18]
Spanish rule
Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing there in 1494. His probable landing point was Dry Harbour, now called Discovery Bay.,[19] although there is some debate that it might have been St. Ann's Bay[citation needed]. St. Ann's Bay was named "Saint Gloria" by Columbus, as the first sighting of the land. One mile west of St. Ann's Bay is the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, Sevilla, which was established in 1509 and abandoned around 1524 because it was deemed unhealthy.[20] The capital was moved to Spanish Town, then called St. Jago de la Vega, around 1534 (at present-day St. Catherine).[21]
British rule
Spanish Town has the oldest cathedral of the British colonies in the Caribbean.[21] The Spanish were forcibly evicted by the English at Ocho Rios in St. Ann. In 1655 the English, led by Sir William Penn and General Robert Venables, took over the last Spanish fort in Jamaica.[22] The name of Montego Bay, the capital of the parish of St. James, was derived from the Spanish name manteca bahía (or Bay of Lard), alluding to the lard-making industry based on processing the numerous boars in the area.[23]
Henry Morgan was a famous Caribbean pirate and privateer; he had first come to the West Indies as an indentured servant, like most of the early English colonists.[24]
In 1660, the population of Jamaica was about 4,500 white and 1,500 black,[25] but by as early as the 1670s, black people formed a majority of the population.[26]
In 1394, France prohibited Jews as residents of their country. By 1660, Jamaica had become a refuge for Jews in the New World, also attracting those who had been expelled from Spain and Portugal. A settlement of Jews had arrived in 1510, soon after the son of Christopher Columbus settled on the island. Primarily merchants and traders, the Jewish community was forced to live a clandestine life, calling themselves "Portugals". After the British took over rule of Jamaica, the Jews decided the best defense against Spain's regaining control was to encourage making the colony a base for Caribbean pirates. With the pirates installed in Port Royal, the Spanish would be deterred from attacking. The British leaders agreed with the viability of this strategy to forestall outside aggression.[27]
When the English captured Jamaica in 1655, the Spanish colonists fled after freeing their slaves.[22] The slaves dispersed into the mountains, joining the maroons, those who had previously escaped from the Spanish to live with the Taínos.[28] The Jamaican Maroons fought the British during the 18th century.[28] The name is still used today for their modern descendants. During the centuries of slavery, Maroons established free communities in the mountainous interior of Jamaica, where they maintained their freedom and independence for generations.

VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.

True Caribbean Pirates (720p)
True Caribbean Pirates captures the events and tales of piracy that were said to take place in the Caribbean during the time when Christopher Columbus made his landing in the West Indies during 1492. Within this time, the land of the Caribbean had attracted the attention of many but was dominated by Spain; as they mined plenty of riches and gold out of the region. This drew attention to the land and disruptions arose- creating chaos in the new world. Regions such as Holland, England and France all began to send privateers into the land so they could to- establish a presence.
