Amelia Peláez del Casal (5 January 1896 – 8 April 1968) was an important Cuban painter of the Avant-garde generation.
Amelia Peláez was born in 1896 in Yaguajay, in the former Cuban province of Las Villas (now Sancti Spíritus Province). In 1915, her family moved to Havana, to the La Víbora district, and this gave her the opportunity to enter the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro" at the rather late age of 20 years (students at this academy usually start at 12–13 years of age). She was among Leopoldo Romañach's favourite students. In 1924 she graduated from San Alejandro, and exhibited her paintings for the first time, along with another Cuban female painter, María Pepa Lamarque, at the Association of Painters and Sculptors in Havana. Receiving a small government grant, she travelled to New York City in the Summer of 1924 and began six months of study at the Art Students' League. In 1927, after being awarded a larger grant, she began studying in France, while paying short visits to Spain, Italy, and other countries.

The clients, Anne Milne and Jacob Ojito, asked I-Beam Design to invent a new kind of minimal white space to exhibit their art collection which includes works by renowned Cuban artists Wilfredo Lam and Amelia Pelaez as well as paintings from the South American "Escuela del Sur" and Arte Concreto Invencion. The architects proposed an intersection between home and gallery based on a spatial concept that would reflect upon the compositional strategies employed in painting. In order to achieve this I-Beam suggested working in collaboration with Joan Waltemath, a contemporary painter whose work is based on a matrix of numerical ratios that resonate beautifully with the proportions of architectonic space. The clients welcomed this idea.
PAMM Presents Cortadito, a traditional Cuban Son ensemble that performs music from the 1920-50s. Influenced by the sounds of Son Montuno, Boleros and other early Cuban musical styles, this dynamic group brought museum goers back to a time when Trio Matamoros and Ignacio Piniero ruled the airwaves. Visitors enjoyed dancing under the stars, a rum bar on the terrace, and see paintings by Cuban modernist Amelia Peláez along with other works on views in the galleries. PAMM Free First Thursdays is sponsored in part by Knight Foundation.
