From the Village Voice: [Robert] Maier remembers when Bill Murray came aboard as the person to sing the "love theme" of John Waters's 1981 Odorama epic Polyester. "John was livid," he remembers. "He hated Bill Murray. He hated Saturday Night Live. He hated Caddyshack." This might seem strange because they were young, edgy, and irreverent artists, and it would seem they would be John's people. "But Murray was a mass-audience TV phenomenon, while John was an underground and dangerous artist. "John bragged at every opportunity that he never even watched TV. "John's humor was not doofusy like Bill Murray's. John was angry, gay, and shocking, and he didn't want it diluted." Well, Murray sang the song nonetheless, and Maier wasn't sure if he had done it so off-key for the humor, to mimic a lousy suburban lounge singer, or because he simply couldn't sing. But he also admits it turned out to be "funny and very appropriate"!

Polyester is a 1981 comedy film directed, produced, and written by John Waters, and starring Divine, Tab Hunter, Edith Massey, and Mink Stole. It was filmed in Waters' native Baltimore, Maryland, and features a gimmick called "Odorama", whereby viewers could smell what they saw on screen through scratch and sniff cards.
The film is a satirical look at suburban life involving divorce, abortion, adultery, alcoholism, foot fetishism, and the Religious Right.
Polyester tells the story of housewife Francine Fishpaw (Divine), whose life is crumbling around her in her upper middle class suburban Baltimore home. Her husband, Elmer (David Samson), is a polyester-clad lout who owns an X-rated theater, causing anti-pornography protesters to picket the Fishpaws' house. She also states that "All the neighborhood women spit at me" whenever she is at the Shopping Mall. Francine's children are Lu-Lu (Mary Garlington), her spoiled, slutty daughter, and Dexter (Ken King), her delinquent, glue-sniffing son who derives illicit pleasure from stomping on women's feet. Also adding to Francine's troubles is her snobby, class-conscious, cocaine-snorting mother, LaRue (Joni Ruth White), who robs Francine blind and only cares about her "valuable shopping time."

PlotFrancine Fishpaw is an upper middle class suburban housewife in Baltimore. Unfortunately for this "good Christian woman", the money to support her lifestyle comes from her husband's porno theater, the neighbors are protesting, her son is the notorious "Baltimore Stomper", her daughter is knocked up by a local hoodlum, and her husband is having an affair with his secretary.

"He hated Bill Murray. He hated Saturday Night Live. He hated Caddyshack." This might seem strange because they were young, edgy, and irreverent artists, and it would seem they would be John's people. "But Murray was a mass-audience TV phenomenon, while John was an underground and dangerous artist. "John bragged at every opportunity that he never even watched TV. "John's humor was not doofusy like Bill Murray's. John was angry, gay, and shocking, and he didn't want it diluted." Eva Everything's first music video. Shot on really old crappy 3/4 inch tape and edited in a skeletal news bay. We started editing on New Year's Eve 1980 and finished in the wee hours on Jan. 1, 1981. Locations include Nuts & Bolts, Parachute, and Hair One.. The big guy I push over is the legendary Jim Eaves. Smilin' Mike (Blab with AB) is Mike Holland, then a DJ at CHUM. No budget to speak of; everyone worked for free. It debuted on The All Night Show with Chuck the Security Guard. It's hard to imagine, but there were no video shows or music channels yet. Eva Everything's first music video. Shot on really old crappy 3/4 inch tape and edited in a skeletal news bay. We started editing on New Year's Eve 1980 and finished in the wee hours on Jan. 1, 1981. Locations include Nuts & Bolts, Parachute, and Hair One.. The big guy I push over is the legendary Jim Eaves. Smilin' Mike (Blab with AB) is Mike Holland, then a DJ at CHUM. No budget to speak of; everyone worked for free. It debuted on The All Night Show with Chuck the Security Guard. It's hard to imagine, but there were no video shows or music channels yet.
