What Lawn and Turf Suppliers Do

You can opt to have lawn or turf supplied to lay yourself, or have the lawn and turf company provide a complete service that includes supply and installation. Some services lawn and turn companies carry out include:

  • Supply lawn and turf: To help you achieve a luscious new lawn, the lawn and turf company will provide you with all the supplies you need including the new turf, fertiliser, topsoil and so on. They can also advise on the most appropriate grass to suit your needs and budget. For more information see lawn & turf supply.

  • Lay lawn and turf: Before laying new lawn or turf, the supplier will prepare the surface by removing weeds, rocks and old lawn among other things. They will then moisten the ground and lay the turf in a brickwork pattern to make it more stable. It will then be top-dressed and soaked with water. Also see lawn & turf laying.

  • Synthetic turf: Synthetic turf can be used in a huge range of areas – around swimming pools, in playgrounds, in apartment complexes, caravan parks, or even just in place of that tired old lawn around your home. For more see synthetic turf supply & install.

  • Disease and pest management: Most lawns can tolerate pests and diseases, but when conditions are damp the grass can be more prone to them. If you find your lawn has developed disease or an influx of pests, consult a professional. To find out in your area see lawn & turf - disease and pest management.

Other services they may provide include:

  • Installing drainage and irrigation

  • Supplying and installing soil, mulch or bark

  • Garden plant outs

  • Turf recommendations

Considerations when Laying Lawn or Turf

When you are laying new turf in your yard, there are some things that you will need to consider:

  1. First in mind should be how much use the lawn will get.  Lawns that are more heavily used will need a tougher turf than lawns that will get little use.

  2. Your budget will also have a place to play in the type of turf that you’ll be able to get.

  3. The amount of sun and shade that your garden gets will also determine the type of turf that will do best in your yard.

  4. Also consider any pets you may have, the weather conditions, the amount of maintenance you are prepared to undertake and the type of soil and drainage you have.

Types of Lawn and Turf

There are two types of grasses – warm season grasses and cool season grasses.

  • Warm season grasses: grasses that grow over the summer months and become dormant during the cooler months. They are able to repair themselves after damage due to their creeping growth habits but this same habit means that they are able to enter garden beds if they aren’t kept properly maintained. Warm season grasses include soft leaf buffalo, kikuyu and fine leaf couch grasses. Sir Walter soft leaf buffalo is perhaps the best known warm season grass.

  • Cool season grasses: non-creeping grasses that grow in an upright fashion. They provide a luxurious lawn that is deep green in colour and grows all year-round. Cool season grasses do require more water than warm season grasses and because they do not self-repair, they need to be oversowed or re-turfed if damage appears. Cool season grasses include tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and fine ryegrass/fine fescue blend

Synthetic Turf – Another Option

Synthetic turf is a great option in this time of low water levels.  This turf is remarkably realistic, does not require watering ever, and is extremely durable.  No longer does it look like “fake grass”; instead it now gives the appearance of a lush, well-cared for lawn.  Synthetic turf is also remarkably low-maintenance and will never require mowing.  It’s basically a case of laying the turf and forgetting about it! For more information see this article about synthetic turf.

Hiring a Lawn or Turf Supplier

When selecting a lawn and turf company, obtain a quote for what you require – if it is just the turf or a full service that includes supply and full installation.  Ask the professional what maintenance you will need to perform after the turf has been installed to ensure that it takes well and looks its best.

How Much Does Lawn & Turf Cost?

Expect to pay in the region of $60 per hour for lawn and turf services, with turf in the region of $15 per roll. This combination of labour and materials will typically make up a quote, though a visit to your property by a supplier will yield a more accurate idea of cost.
