Farnham To Aldershot on Super 8 Cine Film To see the fast version http://youtu.be/QHX-jELk8p4 This version has been slowed due to popular response Local Information The journey started outside my first house in Wolseley Road Aldershot, continuing into Farnham town centre and back again. This all took place one Sunday evening in 1975. Those of you who are local will pick up on some of the following road changes to the area. • Grosvenor Road -- there's no roundabout when you come to Church Lane. • Weybourne Road -- there's no traffic lights at Lower Weybourne Lane. • Hale Road - no traffic lights at Guildford Road. If you are taking this route today going into Farnham you have to turn left from East Street, into Dogflud Way, pass Mike Hawthorn Drive on your left and return back onto East Street. If you are local, look for garages which have gone, and different shops in Farnham town centre, price of petrol/gallon and the lack of vehicles on the road. This could be a long list and everybody will find something if they know the route. The average speed works out at over 170mph. Finally, check out the conditions of the road surface which always surprises me! Technical Information For the anoraks; I took this film on a Sanko Super CM300 Super Eight Cine Camera one Sunday evening in 1975. My friend and best man Michael Pickett was driving his MGB GT and I sat in the passenger seat with camera mounted on a tripod sitting in the foot well. The camera was operated by a shutter release cable and just one frame was taken with every press of the cable release. I remember when we got back my fingers felt like they would drop off. For the technical, the film is about 2 minute 16 seconds at 18 FPS (which meant I had to press that release 2,448 times and the release cable was not very easy to push). I still have that camera, even though the cable release wore out and has long gone. Super 8 films came with or without a sound track. If your camera was capable of recording sound you could buy film with a sound strip. The problem you may encounter if you did a lot of editing, i.e. cutting the film and rejoining it you would find that the sound would drop on the join. Because I could not record sound on my camera I would have a sound track put onto the film after editing, a continuous sound track with no breaks. (A soundtrack was a very thin strip of magnetic material stuck onto the film just outside the picture area) The sound was added using a homemade 4 channel mixer. A stopwatch/Cassette tape players/ record players/microphones all had to be set and running at the right time. The whole job could take a very long time before you got it right. This digital version of the film has had a digital soundtrack added as the original film sound was not very good compared to today's standard. 2013 Digital Video Camera equipment used was a Canon 7D Camera fitted with a Canon lens 24-105mm using image stabilisation. Fortunately I still had the tripod I used in 1975 as all the tripods I had available on the day would not fit very well in the car. Two of the tripod legs fitted into the metal seat frame of the car, the other leg was supported on a piece of wood sitting on the carpet. A big thank you to my wife Ann for getting up early Sunday morning and sitting in the passenger seat operating the camera and having to listen to me moaning about the red traffic lights and other hindrances during filming. Video Editing Sony Vegas was used for 99% of the editing. Third party software was also used initially. Hope you enjoy the film
