The third day of Japan's Emperor Akihito state visit to Britain has ended with a banquet in London on Thursday night.
Akihito and his wife, Michiko were joined for the occasion by the reigning British monarch - Queen Elizabeth II.
But former prisoners-of-war, who have been following Akihito throughout the day, were out in force at the function.
The event was held at the Victoria and Albert museum, named in honour of Britain's one-time Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert.
Once again, former Japanese labour camp internees made their voices heard.
They staged a protest and symbolically turned their backs on the Emperor when he arrived for the banquet.
Among the dignitaries attending the banquet was Lady Thatcher, Britain's former Prime Minister.
Like the other guests - she could not fail to notice the protest by the small group of former P-O-W's and civilian prisoners who are calling from further compensation from the Japanese government.

Former prisoners of war in Britain will on Thursday take their protest to the gates of Downing Street and deliver a letter to the prime minister before a visit by Emperor Akihito.
It will be their fourth protest in three days as they continue to haunt the emperor during his visit.
On Wednesday, Emperor Akihito managed to keep his composure as he was dogged by protesters during his visit to Wales.
Former POWs also turned up later in the day as the emperor and his wife attended a white-tie dinner in London's financial district hosted by the Lord Mayor of London.
The shouts of about 30 former civilian prisoners could be heard over the bagpipers welcoming the Emperor and Empress to London's Guildhall on Wednesday night.
But once again, Emperor Akihito took the demonstrators in stride, continuing with his official duties, including inspecting the honour guard stationed outside Guildhall.
It was the second day of protests over Akihito's state visit to the U-K, a visit which was at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
His trip has angered former prisoners of war in Britain, who are demanding a formal apology for Japan's treatment of them in the Second World War.
But the host of the Guildhall banquet - London's Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Nichols - assured his Japanese guests that they were very welcome.
He added that Britain and Japan both wished to see a stable climate for investment.

At a Buckingham Palace banquet on Tuesday, Akihito had alluded to the protests, saying he and the empress could never forget the suffering of so many people during the war.
During his speech at Guildhall 24 hours later, he said he hoped his visit would bring Britain and Japan closer together.

Japan's Kyodo News Agency has quoted Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto as saying that the emperor has done his best to express his own thoughts frankly without getting involved in politics.
Hashimoto reportedly added that he hoped the Emperor's feelings would be accepted by the British people.
But that hasn't been the case.
Earlier on Wednesday, dozens of former prisoners-of-war turned their backs on Akihito as he arrived in Wales, the main centre of Japan's massive investment in Britain.
The POWs have vowed to protest for the duration of the Emperor's stay in Britain.
Later on Thursday, they will take their protest to 10, Downing Street where they will hand a letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The protesters have rejected his attempts at reconciliation.

President Benigno S. Aquino III welcomed Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on the first day of their State Visit to the Philippines.
Their Majesties’ visit marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan, and is also the first official visit of a reigning Japanese Imperial royalty.
According to the Official Gazette (www.gov.ph), Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko first came to the country on November 5-10, 1962. A successor to the Chrysanthemum throne, the then Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko arrived for a five-day State Visit and were welcomed by President Diosdado Macapagal. The royal couple also paid a visit to former President Emilio Aguinaldo in his residence at Kawit, Cavite.
The long history of Philippines-Japan relations dates back to 1889, when the Imperial Japanese government installed a consulate in Manila during the Spanish colonial period. It was only on July 23, 1956 when diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established through the ratification by the Philippine Senate of the Reparations Agreement between Japan and the Republic of the Philippines.

President Benigno S. Aquino III held a welcome ceremony for Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on the second day of their State Visit to the Philippines.
According to reports by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan and the Philippines share basic values such as freedom and democracy, and have nurtured close economic relations. Japan is the Philippines’ largest trading partner and the largest source of investment with a total of P35.7 billion as of 2014.
The Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement was also forged in December 2008, resulting to a large number of products being traded between the two countries without tariff.
In terms of people-to-people exchanges and tourism, there is a 6.9% increase or 464,000 individuals from the 2013-2014 statistics of Japanese tourists visiting the Philippines, while there are around 184,000 Filipino tourist arrivals in Japan in 2014.
The Government of the Philippines has a long extended state invitation for Their Majesties, and this was renewed upon President Aquino’s State Visit in Japan on June 2015. On the occasion of the latter’s state visit, the two nations agreed upon the “Roadmap for Transport Infrastructure Development for Metro Manila and Its Surrounding Areas”, which is indicative of Japan’s commitment to support infrastructure development in Metro Manila through projects such as the “North-South Commuter Rail Project (Malolos-Tutuban)”.
Also on the President’s State Visit last year, Japan has upgraded the “Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development” (J-BIRD) to J-BIRD 2, focusing more in ensuring autonomy in the Bangsamoro area and putting more emphasis in Japan’s contributions to the Mindanao peace process.

U-S President Bill Clinton begun his trip to Asia with a mission to encourage Japan to act to revive its economy, boost recovery throughout the region, and protect U-S prosperity.
The president arrived at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo and headed directly to the Imperial Residence for a meeting with Emperor Akihito.
Clinton's tour of the region will also take him to South Korea and the U-S Pacific territory of Guam.
U-S President Bill Clinton arrived in Tokyo hoping to convince the Japanese government to move decisively in its battle against a downward spiralling economy.
Before boarding Air Force One in Washington, Clinton reiterated his belief that Japan remains the key to protecting American prosperity.
He said opening certain closed Japanese markets to outside competition was essential to progress.
Japan is currently in its worst recession since the end of World War II.
The president is spending roughly 30 hours in the Japanese capital.
His schedule began at the Imperial Palace, where he's having tea with Emperor Akihito.
Later, Clinton is due to appear in a televised town-hall meeting, then return to the palace for an official dinner.
Clinton's five day whirlwind tour of the region will bring him on from Tokyo to Seoul, South Korea, and then to Guam, the U-S Pacific territory that has been hit hard by Japan's recession.
This week Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi unveiled a 196 (b) billion U-S dollar package of spending and tax cuts to spur Japan's economy.
It is Japan's eighth recovery plan in eight years of economic distress.
In downtown Tokyo, a group of around 100 left-wing activists took to the streets to protest against the Japan-U-S security pact.
The group fears a more engaged Japan in Asia regional security, in association with America, will eventually lead to a militarised Japan.
Clinton and Prime Minister Obuchi are expected to discuss a missile self defence system to protect Japan against the threat of North Korean aggression.
The problem of communist North Korea, which startled the world - especially Japan - by test-firing a missile over Japan on August 31 will also be discussed.
Tokyo and Washington are worried by North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons ambitions.
The North is suspected of building an underground site for the development of nuclear weapons.

The visit is part of an official tour of Japan, aimed at reinforcing the importance the US places on Asia.

Akihito (明仁?, born 23 December 1933) is the current reigning Emperor (天皇, tennō?) of Japan, the 125th emperor of his line according to Japan's traditional order of succession. He acceded to the throne in 1989.
In Japan, the emperor is never referred to by his given name, but rather is referred to as "His Imperial Majesty the Emperor" which may be shortened to "His Imperial Majesty" (天皇陛下, Tennō Heika?). In writing, the emperor is also referred to formally as "The Reigning Emperor" (今上天皇, kinjō tennō?). The Era of Akihito's reign bears the name "Heisei" (平成), and according to custom he will be renamed "Emperor Heisei" (平成天皇 Heisei tennō; see "posthumous name") by order of the cabinet after his death. At the same time, the name of the next era under his successor will also be established.
Akihito is the eldest son and the fifth child of Emperor Hirohito (the Shōwa Emperor) and Empress Kōjun. Titled Prince Tsugu (継宮, Tsugu-no-miya?) as a child, he was raised and educated by his private tutors and then attended the elementary and secondary departments of the Peers' School (Gakushūin) from 1940 to 1952. Unlike his predecessors in the Imperial Family, he did not receive a commission as an Army officer, at the request of his father, Hirohito.

THE JAPANESE EMPEROR 天皇 | 10 Things You Didn't Know In december, for most places, it’s all about Christmas. In Japan, Christmas is big too. But just prior to Christmas, on the 23rd of December, it is the current Japanese Emperor, Akihito’s birthday. It is a national holiday in Japan (天皇誕生日). This year he turns 82, and I thought let’s do a video on The Japanese Emperor. So here’s 10 things you didn’t know about the Japanese Emperor! 1) WORLD'S OLDEST MONARCHY The Japanese monarchy, The Imperial House of Japan, is the oldest, continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. Compared to other monarchies, you have the British Monarchy starting at 1066 and the the Danish Monarchy at 935. For the Japanese Monarchy, we’re going back to 660BC, which started with the legendary Japanese Emperor Jimmu. 2) DESCENDENT OF GODS Shinto is the largest religion in Japan, and the line of Japanese Emperors are said to be the direct descendants of several Shinto gods, the most notable being the Sun goddess, Amaterasu. The Emperor is the ceremonial head of state in Japan, but it makes sense that with his divine ancestry, he is also officially the head of the Shinto religion itself. 3) TERRITORY-INDEPENDENT PHENOMENON As odd as it may seem, the title of Emperor (or Tennō) has never really been about territorial designations. Contrast this with European monarchs who often wanted to conquer and control additional territory. In fact, the position of Emperor is a territory-independent phenomenon. In other words, the Emperor is the Emperor regardless if he has followers in the whole of Japan or in only one province. 4) EMPEROR'S CAPACITY From 1192 to 1867, the shoguns held the real power (Shoguns being the military commanders of the time). The Emperor still officially nominated the Shoguns to their positions, but this was largely ceremonial. Today, the Japanese Constitution vests executive power in the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. The Emperor of Japan holds no power but is said to be “the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people." 5) POLYGAMY The Japanese imperial dynasty consistently practiced official polygamy. That is openly having more than one spouse or wife. Besides his empress, the Emperor could take several secondary consorts or concubines; which helped produce more offspring for the imperial clan. 6) FIRST COMMONER WIFE In the history of the Japanese Imperial Family, there was never an Emperor who had a commoner as wife or even concubine. That is, until now. The current Emperor of Japan married Empress Michiko, a commoner! She was not from the former court nobility nor from one of the former branches of the Imperial Family. Michiko was the daughter of an industrialist. This had never happened before. 7) FISH SCIENCE Emperor Akihito has shown to be a unique one. Add to that his interest in Fish Science (Ichthyology). The Emperor is a published ichthyological researcher, having written papers for several scholarly journals, and has specialised studies within the taxonomy of the family Gobiidae. Random. 8) STOP GAP EMPRESSES Generally, it has been males who have ascended Japan’s Chrysanthemum Throne; as in Emperors not Empresses. However, if a suitable male was not available, there have been times where women have ascended the throne; almost as a stop gap measure. Of the 125 monarchs, there have been 8 women who have reigned on 10 different occasions. 2 of them reigned twice. Once a suitable male descendant was considered old enough to rule, many Empresses, and even Emperors, abdicated or relinquished the throne. But, what is considered old enough? 9) CHILD EMPERORS Over a thousand years ago, a tradition started that an Emperor should ascend young. If he had passed his toddler years, he was said to be old enough. Being a child was apparently a fine property. Thus, a multitude of Japanese Emperors ascended as children; as young as 6 to 8 years old. In fact, Emperor Antoku, the 81st Emperor of Japan, became Emperor at the age of 2! 10) ABDICATING TREND Abdication was very common. Actually it was more frequent than death on the throne. The Emperors tasks involved so many repetitive rituals that after about ten years of service, it was deemed a reasonable compensation to live the rest of their lives in pampered retirement! In fact, many emperors were pretty welcoming to the idea of relinquishing their title. And even some teenage Emperors were happy to retire and live a life like Scrooge McDuck. Akihito and his wife, Michiko were joined for the occasion by the reigning British monarch - Queen Elizabeth II. But former prisoners-of-war, who have been following Akihito throughout the day, were out in force at the function. The event was held at the Victoria and Albert museum, named in honour of Britain's one-time Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. Once again, former Japanese labour camp internees made their voices heard. They staged a protest and symbolically turned their backs on the Emperor when he arrived for the banquet. Among the dignitaries attending the banquet was Lady Thatcher, Britain's former Prime Minister. Like the other guests - she could not fail to notice the protest by the small group of former P-O-W's and civilian prisoners who are calling from further compensation from the Japanese government. Japanese/English Former prisoners of war in Britain will on Thursday take their protest to the gates of Downing Street and deliver a letter to the prime minister before a visit by Emperor Akihito. It will be their fourth protest in three days as they continue to haunt the emperor during his visit. On Wednesday, Emperor Akihito managed to keep his composure as he was dogged by protesters during his visit to Wales. Former POWs also turned up later in the day as the emperor and his wife attended a white-tie dinner in London's financial district hosted by the Lord Mayor of London. The shouts of about 30 former civilian prisoners could be heard over the bagpipers welcoming the Emperor and Empress to London's Guildhall on Wednesday night. But once again, Emperor Akihito took the demonstrators in stride, continuing with his official duties, including inspecting the honour guard stationed outside Guildhall. It was the second day of protests over Akihito's state visit to the U-K, a visit which was at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II. His trip has angered former prisoners of war in Britain, who are demanding a formal apology for Japan's treatment of them in the Second World War. But the host of the Guildhall banquet - London's Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Nichols - assured his Japanese guests that they were very welcome. He added that Britain and Japan both wished to see a stable climate for investment. Aquino III welcomed Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on the first day of their State Visit to the Philippines. Their Majesties’ visit marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan, and is also the first official visit of a reigning Japanese Imperial royalty. According to the Official Gazette (www.gov.ph), Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko first came to the country on November 5-10, 1962. A successor to the Chrysanthemum throne, the then Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko arrived for a five-day State Visit and were welcomed by President Diosdado Macapagal. The royal couple also paid a visit to former President Emilio Aguinaldo in his residence at Kawit, Cavite. The long history of Philippines-Japan relations dates back to 1889, when the Imperial Japanese government installed a consulate in Manila during the Spanish colonial period. Malacañan Palace 27 January 2016 President Benigno S. Aquino III held a welcome ceremony for Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on the second day of their State Visit to the Philippines. According to reports by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan and the Philippines share basic values such as freedom and democracy, and have nurtured close economic relations. Japan is the Philippines’ largest trading partner and the largest source of investment with a total of P35.7 billion as of 2014. The Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement was also forged in December 2008, resulting to a large number of products being traded between the two countries without tariff. In terms of people-to-people exchanges and tourism, there is a 6.9% increase or 464,000 individuals from the 2013-2014 statistics of Japanese tourists visiting the Philippines, while there are around 184,000 Filipino tourist arrivals in Japan in 2014. The Government of the Philippines has a long extended state invitation for Their Majesties, and this was renewed upon President Aquino’s State Visit in Japan on June 2015. On the occasion of the latter’s state visit, the two nations agreed upon the “Roadmap for Transport Infrastructure Development for Metro Manila and Its Surrounding Areas”, which is indicative of Japan’s commitment to support infrastructure development in Metro Manila through projects such as the “North-South Commuter Rail Project (Malolos-Tutuban)”. JAPAN: US PRESIDENT CLINTON MEETS EMPEROR AKIHITO
Natural Sound U-S President Bill Clinton begun his trip to Asia with a mission to encourage Japan to act to revive its economy, boost recovery throughout the region, and protect U-S prosperity. The president arrived at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo and headed directly to the Imperial Residence for a meeting with Emperor Akihito. Clinton's tour of the region will also take him to South Korea and the U-S Pacific territory of Guam. U-S President Bill Clinton arrived in Tokyo hoping to convince the Japanese government to move decisively in its battle against a downward spiralling economy. Before boarding Air Force One in Washington, Clinton reiterated his belief that Japan remains the key to protecting American prosperity. He said opening certain closed Japanese markets to outside competition was essential to progress. Japan is currently in its worst recession since the end of World War II. The president is spending roughly 30 hours in the Japanese capital. His schedule began at the Imperial Palace, where he's having tea with Emperor Akihito. Later, Clinton is due to appear in a televised town-hall meeting, then return to the palace for an official dinner. Clinton's five day whirlwind tour of the region will bring him on from Tokyo to Seoul, South Korea, and then to Guam, the U-S Pacific territory that has been hit hard by Japan's recession. This week Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi unveiled a 196 (b) billion U-S dollar package of spending and tax cuts to spur Japan's economy. It is Japan's eighth recovery plan in eight years of economic distress. In downtown Tokyo, a group of around 100 left-wing activists took to the streets to protest against the Japan-U-S security pact. The group fears a more engaged Japan in Asia regional security, in association with America, will eventually lead to a militarised Japan. Clinton and Prime Minister Obuchi are expected to discuss a missile self defence system to protect Japan against the threat of North Korean aggression. The problem of communist North Korea, which startled the world - especially Japan - by test-firing a missile over Japan on August 31 will also be discussed. Tokyo and Washington are worried by North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons ambitions. The North is suspected of building an underground site for the development of nuclear weapons. The visit is part of an official tour of Japan, aimed at reinforcing the importance the US places on Asia. THE JAPANESE EMPEROR 天皇 | 10 Things You Didn't Know In december, for most places, it’s all about Christmas. In Japan, Christmas is big too. But just prior to Christmas, on the 23rd of December, it is the current Japanese Emperor, Akihito’s birthday. It is a national holiday in Japan (天皇誕生日). This year he turns 82, and I thought let’s do a video on The Japanese Emperor. So here’s 10 things you didn’t know about the Japanese Emperor! 1) WORLD'S OLDEST MONARCHY The Japanese monarchy, The Imperial House of Japan, is the oldest, continuous hereditary monarchy in the world. Compared to other monarchies, you have the British Monarchy starting at 1066 and the the Danish Monarchy at 935. For the Japanese Monarchy, we’re going back to 660BC, which started with the legendary Japanese Emperor Jimmu. 2) DESCENDENT OF GODS Shinto is the largest religion in Japan, and the line of Japanese Emperors are said to be the direct descendants of several Shinto gods, the most notable being the Sun goddess, Amaterasu. The Emperor is the ceremonial head of state in Japan, but it makes sense that with his divine ancestry, he is also officially the head of the Shinto religion itself. 3) TERRITORY-INDEPENDENT PHENOMENON As odd as it may seem, the title of Emperor (or Tennō) has never really been about territorial designations. Contrast this with European monarchs who often wanted to conquer and control additional territory. In fact, the position of Emperor is a territory-independent phenomenon. In other words, the Emperor is the Emperor regardless if he has followers in the whole of Japan or in only one province. 4) EMPEROR'S CAPACITY From 1192 to 1867, the shoguns held the real power (Shoguns being the military commanders of the time). The Emperor still officially nominated the Shoguns to their positions, but this was largely ceremonial. Today, the Japanese Constitution vests executive power in the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. The Emperor of Japan holds no power but is said to be “the symbol of the State and of the unity of the people." 5) POLYGAMY The Japanese imperial dynasty consistently practiced official polygamy. That is openly having more than one spouse or wife. Besides his empress, the Emperor could take several secondary consorts or concubines; which helped produce more offspring for the imperial clan. 6) FIRST COMMONER WIFE In the history of the Japanese Imperial Family, there was never an Emperor who had a commoner as wife or even concubine. That is, until now. The current Emperor of Japan married Empress Michiko, a commoner! She was not from the former court nobility nor from one of the former branches of the Imperial Family. Michiko was the daughter of an industrialist. This had never happened before. 7) FISH SCIENCE Emperor Akihito has shown to be a unique one. Add to that his interest in Fish Science (Ichthyology). The Emperor is a published ichthyological researcher, having written papers for several scholarly journals, and has specialised studies within the taxonomy of the family Gobiidae. Random. 8) STOP GAP EMPRESSES Generally, it has been males who have ascended Japan’s Chrysanthemum Throne; as in Emperors not Empresses. However, if a suitable male was not available, there have been times where women have ascended the throne; almost as a stop gap measure. Of the 125 monarchs, there have been 8 women who have reigned on 10 different occasions. 2 of them reigned twice. Once a suitable male descendant was considered old enough to rule, many Empresses, and even Emperors, abdicated or relinquished the throne. But, what is considered old enough? 9) CHILD EMPERORS Over a thousand years ago, a tradition started that an Emperor should ascend young. If he had passed his toddler years, he was said to be old enough. Being a child was apparently a fine property. Thus, a multitude of Japanese Emperors ascended as children; as young as 6 to 8 years old. In fact, Emperor Antoku, the 81st Emperor of Japan, became Emperor at the age of 2! 10) ABDICATING TREND Abdication was very common. Actually it was more frequent than death on the throne. The Emperors tasks involved so many repetitive rituals that after about ten years of service, it was deemed a reasonable compensation to live the rest of their lives in pampered retirement! In fact, many emperors were pretty welcoming to the idea of relinquishing their title. And even some teenage Emperors were happy to retire and live a life like Scrooge McDuck. In his brief remarks, President Aquino shared that Japan has been a “consistent, able and trustworthy partner” who has helped in the progress of the Filipino people, citing that Japan is the Philippines’ top trading partner in 2014 and the largest source of active Official Development Assistance (ODA) and Investment Promotion Agency (IPA) approved foreign investments in the same year. The President added that Japan has been a vital partner of the Philippines’ peace process including the development of Mindanao, as well as in the enhancement of the country’s maritime and disaster management capabilities. “This visit comes at an auspicious time as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of our nations and your presence today indeed emphasizes the depth of the friendship between our two nations,” he said. English/Nat On the last day of his state visit to the U-K, Emperor Akihito of Japan, spoke of the strong relationship between the two countries. Friday also gave the Emperor a chance to indulge his interest in fish - first at a meeting at a natural history society and later by visiting the aquarium at London Zoo. Former World War II prisoners once again held small demonstrations against the visit - but the Emperor met another group of veterans angry about the protests. On the last day of his state visit to the U-K, the Emperor of Japan met a group of British enthusiasts who share his interest in gobi fish. Akihito spends much of his time studying and publishing academic papers about the fish, which are particularly common in Japan. Emperor Akihito visited the Linnean Society of London, a natural history organisation founded in 1788 to meet other experts. Meanwhile, Empress Michiko, went to the headquarters of the British Red Cross after saying goodbye to their host for the state visit - Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Empress was presented with a commemorative plate and met members of the humanitarian organisation. The couple were reunited at a central London hotel for a luncheon hosted by a number of British and Japanese organisations. Emperor Akihito spoke of the efforts that had been made to build a strong relationship between the two countries. The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair has said that Japan has apologised enough for war time atrocities and will not back the ex-POW demands. The last day of the four day state visit ended as it began - with discussions about fish. London zoo had invited Akihito to its aquarium, where he was guided around the tanks. Former prisoners of war in Britain will on Thursday take their protest to the gates of Downing Street and deliver a letter to the prime minister before a visit by Emperor Akihito.
It will be their fourth protest in three days as they continue to haunt the emperor during his visit.
On Wednesday, Emperor Akihito managed to keep his composure as he was dogged by protesters during his visit to Wales.
Former POWs also turned up later in the day as the emperor and his wife attended a white-tie dinner in London's financial district hosted by the Lord Mayor of London.
The shouts of about 30 former civilian prisoners could be heard over the bagpipers welcoming the Emperor and Empress to London's Guildhall on Wednesday night.
But once again, Emperor Akihito took the demonstrators in stride, continuing with his official duties, including inspecting the honour guard stationed outside Guildhall.
It was the second day of protests over Akihito's state visit to the U-K, a visit which was at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
His trip has angered former prisoners of war in Britain, who are demanding a formal apology for Japan's treatment of them in the Second World War.
But the host of the Guildhall banquet - London's Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Nichols - assured his Japanese guests that they were very welcome.
He added that Britain and Japan both wished to see a stable climate for investment.

Earlier on Wednesday, dozens of former prisoners-of-war turned their backs on Akihito as he arrived in Wales, the main centre of Japan's massive investment in Britain.

Later on Thursday, they will take their protest to 10, Downing Street where they will hand a letter to Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Former prisoners of war in Britain will on Thursday take their protest to the gates of Downing Street and deliver a letter to the prime minister before a visit by Emperor Akihito.
It will be their fourth protest in three days as they continue to haunt the emperor during his visit.
On Wednesday, Emperor Akihito managed to keep his composure as he was dogged by protesters during his visit to Wales.
Former POWs also turned up later in the day as the emperor and his wife attended a white-tie dinner in London's financial district hosted by the Lord Mayor of London.
The shouts of about 30 former civilian prisoners could be heard over the bagpipers welcoming the Emperor and Empress to London's Guildhall on Wednesday night.
But once again, Emperor Akihito took the demonstrators in stride, continuing with his official duties, including inspecting the honour guard stationed outside Guildhall.
It was the second day of protests over Akihito's state visit to the U-K, a visit which was at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II.
His trip has angered former prisoners of war in Britain, who are demanding a formal apology for Japan's treatment of them in the Second World War.
But the host of the Guildhall banquet - London's Lord Mayor, Alderman Richard Nichols - assured his Japanese guests that they were very welcome.
He added that Britain and Japan both wished to see a stable climate for investment.

President Benigno S. Aquino III welcomed Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on the first day of their State Visit to the Philippines.
Their Majesties’ visit marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan, and is also the first official visit of a reigning Japanese Imperial royalty.
According to the Official Gazette (www.gov.ph), Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko first came to the country on November 5-10, 1962. A successor to the Chrysanthemum throne, the then Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko arrived for a five-day State Visit and were welcomed by President Diosdado Macapagal. The royal couple also paid a visit to former President Emilio Aguinaldo in his residence at Kawit, Cavite.
The long history of Philippines-Japan relations dates back to 1889, when the Imperial Japanese government installed a consulate in Manila during the Spanish colonial period. It was only on July 23, 1956 when diplomatic relations between the two countries were formally established through the ratification by the Philippine Senate of the Reparations Agreement between Japan and the Republic of the Philippines.

President Benigno S. Aquino III held a welcome ceremony for Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan on the second day of their State Visit to the Philippines.
According to reports by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan and the Philippines share basic values such as freedom and democracy, and have nurtured close economic relations. Japan is the Philippines’ largest trading partner and the largest source of investment with a total of P35.7 billion as of 2014.
The Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement was also forged in December 2008, resulting to a large number of products being traded between the two countries without tariff.
In terms of people-to-people exchanges and tourism, there is a 6.9% increase or 464,000 individuals from the 2013-2014 statistics of Japanese tourists visiting the Philippines, while there are around 184,000 Filipino tourist arrivals in Japan in 2014.
The Government of the Philippines has a long extended state invitation for Their Majesties, and this was renewed upon President Aquino’s State Visit in Japan on June 2015. On the occasion of the latter’s state visit, the two nations agreed upon the “Roadmap for Transport Infrastructure Development for Metro Manila and Its Surrounding Areas”, which is indicative of Japan’s commitment to support infrastructure development in Metro Manila through projects such as the “North-South Commuter Rail Project (Malolos-Tutuban)”.
Also on the President’s State Visit last year, Japan has upgraded the “Japan-Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development” (J-BIRD) to J-BIRD 2, focusing more in ensuring autonomy in the Bangsamoro area and putting more emphasis in Japan’s contributions to the Mindanao peace process.

Clinton's tour of the region will also take him to South Korea and the U-S Pacific territory of Guam.
U-S President Bill Clinton arrived in Tokyo hoping to convince the Japanese government to move decisively in its battle against a downward spiralling economy.
Before boarding Air Force One in Washington, Clinton reiterated his belief that Japan remains the key to protecting American prosperity.
He said opening certain closed Japanese markets to outside competition was essential to progress.
Japan is currently in its worst recession since the end of World War II.
The president is spending roughly 30 hours in the Japanese capital.
His schedule began at the Imperial Palace, where he's having tea with Emperor Akihito.
Later, Clinton is due to appear in a televised town-hall meeting, then return to the palace for an official dinner.
Clinton's five day whirlwind tour of the region will bring him on from Tokyo to Seoul, South Korea, and then to Guam, the U-S Pacific territory that has been hit hard by Japan's recession.
This week Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi unveiled a 196 (b) billion U-S dollar package of spending and tax cuts to spur Japan's economy.
It is Japan's eighth recovery plan in eight years of economic distress.
In downtown Tokyo, a group of around 100 left-wing activists took to the streets to protest against the Japan-U-S security pact.
The group fears a more engaged Japan in Asia regional security, in association with America, will eventually lead to a militarised Japan.
Clinton and Prime Minister Obuchi are expected to discuss a missile self defence system to protect Japan against the threat of North Korean aggression.
The problem of communist North Korea, which startled the world - especially Japan - by test-firing a missile over Japan on August 31 will also be discussed.
Tokyo and Washington are worried by North Korea's missile and nuclear weapons ambitions.
The North is suspected of building an underground site for the development of nuclear weapons.

In december, for most places, it’s all about Christmas.
In Japan, Christmas is big too. But just prior to Christmas, on the 23rd of December, it is the current Japanese Emperor, Akihito’s birthday. It is a national holiday in Japan (天皇誕生日).
This year he turns 82, and I thought let’s do a video on The Japanese Emperor.
So here’s 10 things you didn’t know about the Japanese Emperor!
1) WORLD'S OLDEST MONARCHY
The Japanese monarchy, The Imperial House of Japan, is the oldest, continuous hereditary monarchy in the world.
Compared to other monarchies, you have the British Monarchy starting at 1066 and the the Danish Monarchy at 935. For the Japanese Monarchy, we’re going back to 660BC, which started with the legendary Japanese Emperor Jimmu.
2) DESCENDENT OF GODS
Shinto is the largest religion in Japan, and the line of Japanese Emperors are said to be the direct descendants of several Shinto gods, the most notable being the Sun goddess, Amaterasu.
The Emperor is the ceremonial head of state in Japan, but it makes sense that with his divine ancestry, he is also officially the head of the Shinto religion itself.
3) TERRITORY-INDEPENDENT PHENOMENON
As odd as it may seem, the title of Emperor (or Tennō) has never really been about territorial designations. Contrast this with European monarchs who often wanted to conquer and control additional territory.
In fact, the position of Emperor is a territory-independent phenomenon. In other words, the Emperor is the Emperor regardless if he has followers in the whole of Japan or in only one province.

Besides his empress, the Emperor could take several secondary consorts or concubines; which helped produce more offspring for the imperial clan.
6) FIRST COMMONER WIFE
In the history of the Japanese Imperial Family, there was never an Emperor who had a commoner as wife or even concubine. That is, until now.
The current Emperor of Japan married Empress Michiko, a commoner! She was not from the former court nobility nor from one of the former branches of the Imperial Family. Michiko was the daughter of an industrialist. This had never happened before.
7) FISH SCIENCE
Emperor Akihito has shown to be a unique one. Add to that his interest in Fish Science (Ichthyology).
The Emperor is a published ichthyological researcher, having written papers for several scholarly journals, and has specialised studies within the taxonomy of the family Gobiidae. Random.
8) STOP GAP EMPRESSES
Generally, it has been males who have ascended Japan’s Chrysanthemum Throne; as in Emperors not Empresses. However, if a suitable male was not available, there have been times where women have ascended the throne; almost as a stop gap measure.
Of the 125 monarchs, there have been 8 women who have reigned on 10 different occasions. 2 of them reigned twice.
Once a suitable male descendant was considered old enough to rule, many Empresses, and even Emperors, abdicated or relinquished the throne.
But, what is considered old enough?
9) CHILD EMPERORS
Over a thousand years ago, a tradition started that an Emperor should ascend young. If he had passed his toddler years, he was said to be old enough. Being a child was apparently a fine property. Thus, a multitude of Japanese Emperors ascended as children; as young as 6 to 8 years old.
In fact, Emperor Antoku, the 81st Emperor of Japan, became Emperor at the age of 2!
10) ABDICATING TREND
Abdication was very common. Actually it was more frequent than death on the throne. The Emperors tasks involved so many repetitive rituals that after about ten years of service, it was deemed a reasonable compensation to live the rest of their lives in pampered retirement!
In fact, many emperors were pretty welcoming to the idea of relinquishing their title. And even some teenage Emperors were happy to retire and live a life like Scrooge McDuck.

In december, for most places, it’s all about Christmas.
In Japan, Christmas is big too. But just prior to Christmas, on the 23rd of December, it is the current Japanese Emperor, Akihito’s birthday. It is a national holiday in Japan (天皇誕生日).
This year he turns 82, and I thought let’s do a video on The Japanese Emperor.
So here’s 10 things you didn’t know about the Japanese Emperor!
1) WORLD'S OLDEST MONARCHY
The Japanese monarchy, The Imperial House of Japan, is the oldest, continuous hereditary monarchy in the world.
Compared to other monarchies, you have the British Monarchy starting at 1066 and the the Danish Monarchy at 935. For the Japanese Monarchy, we’re going back to 660BC, which started with the legendary Japanese Emperor Jimmu.
2) DESCENDENT OF GODS
Shinto is the largest religion in Japan, and the line of Japanese Emperors are said to be the direct descendants of several Shinto gods, the most notable being the Sun goddess, Amaterasu.
The Emperor is the ceremonial head of state in Japan, but it makes sense that with his divine ancestry, he is also officially the head of the Shinto religion itself.
3) TERRITORY-INDEPENDENT PHENOMENON
As odd as it may seem, the title of Emperor (or Tennō) has never really been about territorial designations. Contrast this with European monarchs who often wanted to conquer and control additional territory.
In fact, the position of Emperor is a territory-independent phenomenon. In other words, the Emperor is the Emperor regardless if he has followers in the whole of Japan or in only one province.

President Benigno S. Aquino III offered a toast in honor of Their Majesties Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan in a State Dinner at Malacañan Palace.
In his brief remarks, President Aquino shared that Japan has been a “consistent, able and trustworthy partner” who has helped in the progress of the Filipino people, citing that Japan is the Philippines’ top trading partner in 2014 and the largest source of active Official Development Assistance (ODA) and Investment Promotion Agency (IPA) approved foreign investments in the same year.
The President added that Japan has been a vital partner of the Philippines’ peace process including the development of Mindanao, as well as in the enhancement of the country’s maritime and disaster management capabilities.
“This visit comes at an auspicious time as we celebrate the 60th anniversary of our nations and your presence today indeed emphasizes the depth of the friendship between our two nations,” he said.
On the other hand, Emperor Akihito, who spoke in Japanese, replied that under President Aquino’s distinguished leadership, the Philippines has been achieving steady development as a vital member of the Asian community.
His Majesty added that it is in their deepest hope that their visit will deepen the mutual understanding and friendly relations between Japan and the Philippines.

Former World War II prisoners once again held small demonstrations against the visit - but the Emperor met another group of veterans angry about the protests.
On the last day of his state visit to the U-K, the Emperor of Japan met a group of British enthusiasts who share his interest in gobi fish.
Akihito spends much of his time studying and publishing academic papers about the fish, which are particularly common in Japan.
Emperor Akihito visited the Linnean Society of London, a natural history organisation founded in 1788 to meet other experts.
Meanwhile, Empress Michiko, went to the headquarters of the British Red Cross after saying goodbye to their host for the state visit - Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.
The Empress was presented with a commemorative plate and met members of the humanitarian organisation.
The couple were reunited at a central London hotel for a luncheon hosted by a number of British and Japanese organisations.
Emperor Akihito spoke of the efforts that had been made to build a strong relationship between the two countries.

But inside the hotel, the Emperor was due to meet five veterans of the Second World War who were guests at the reception - and who said they would be apologising for the protests against an ally of Britain.
The British Prime Minister, Tony Blair has said that Japan has apologised enough for war time atrocities and will not back the ex-POW demands.
The last day of the four day state visit ended as it began - with discussions about fish.
London zoo had invited Akihito to its aquarium, where he was guided around the tanks.
Back in the summer sunshine, the Emperor engaged in a royal walkabout - meeting some of the families who had waited to meet him.

Emperor Hirohito Biography
Qi-Acise- http://www.qi-acise.com/ Hirohito, posthumously in Japan officially called Emperor Shōwa or the Shōwa Emperor , (April 29, 1901 -- January 7, 1989) was the 124th Emperor of Japan according to the traditional order, reigning from December 25, 1926, until his death in 1989. Although better known outside of Japan by his personal name Hirohito, in Japan he is now referred to primarily by his posthumous name Emperor Shōwa. The word Shōwa is the name of the era that corresponded with the Emperor's reign, and was made the Emperor's own name upon his death. At the start of his reign, Japan was already one of the great powers — the ninth largest economy in the world after Italy, the third largest naval country, and one of the five permanent members of the council of the League of Nations. He was the head of state under the limitation of the Constitution of the Empire of Japan during Japan's imperial expansion, militarization, and involvement in World War II. After the war, he was not prosecuted for war crimes as many other leading government figures were. During the postwar period, he became the symbol of the new state. -

Japanese Emperor Akihito Celebrates 80th Birthday
About 250,000 Japanese gathered to wish Emperor Akihito a happy 80th birthday on Monday (December 23) in Tokyo, the Imperial Household Agency said. Members of the Japanese Imperial family including Emperor Akihito's wife Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, Prince Fumihito Akishino, Princess Kiko Akishino and their daughter Princess Mako stepped out on the balcony of the Imperial Palace three times throughout the morning to wave to the visiting well-wishers. "This year we had a very big typhoon hit the area of Oshima. Quite a few people suffered from the storm and flood damage," Emperor Akihito said, referring to October's Typhoon Wipha that killed 17 people and stranded tens of thousands more. He also offered his condolences and said he planned to keep those still recovering in his thoughts and prayers. "I will continue to keep the survivors in my thoughts and prayers and wish for the continued happiness and prosperity of the Japanese people," Emperor Akihito said. Later in the day Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was set to visit the Emperor to offer his birthday greetings in person, along with high-ranking government officials and ambassadors from various nations.

Members of the Japanese Imperial family including Emperor Akihito's wife Empress Michiko, Crown Prince Naruhito, Crown Princess Masako, Prince Fumihito Akishino, Princess Kiko Akishino and their daughter Princess Mako stepped out on the balcony of the Imperial Palace three times throughout the morning to wave to the visiting well-wishers.
"This year we had a very big typhoon hit the area of Oshima. Quite a few people suffered from the storm and flood damage," Emperor Akihito said, referring to October's Typhoon Wipha that killed 17 people and stranded tens of thousands more.
He also offered his condolences and said he planned to keep those still recovering in his thoughts and prayers.
"I will continue to keep the survivors in my thoughts and prayers and wish for the continued happiness and prosperity of the Japanese people," Emperor Akihito said.
Later in the day Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was set to visit the Emperor to offer his birthday greetings in person, along with high-ranking government officials and ambassadors from various nations.
