As expected, when the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the finalists for enshrinement in the Hall's Class of 2016 during media day at All-Star Weekend in Toronto, Shaquille O'Neal and Allen Iverson headlined the list of luminaries
They were joined at the announcement by Yao Ming, who was not officially anounced as a finalist on Friday, but who had previously been nominated for enshrinement through the Hall's International Committtee, and will join them in consideration for a spot in this summer's class.
The three stars became eligible for induction this season thanks to a pair of calls made last year by the Hall's decision-makers. First, they determined that Iverson's 10-game post-NBA stint playing in Turkey didn't count as a full season of professional play, meaning that A.I. — who didn't officially announce his retirement until October 2013, but who played his final NBA game in February 2010 — met the criteria of being "fully retired for five years before being eligible for Enshrinement." Then, they changed that guideline altogether, reducing the waiting period from five years to four years and opening the door to nomination for O'Neal and Yao, both of whom played their last NBA game during the 2010-11 season.
Some have charged that the Hall made those decisions in order to avoid fielding a 2016 class lacking in star power, especially coming on the heels of a 2015 ceremony that saw many worthy Hall of Famers enshrined — Dikembe Mutombo, Spencer Haywood, Jo Jo White, John Calipari, Lisa Leslie, Tommy Heinsohn and Louie Dampier, among others — but that didn't generate widespread crossover interest ... or, at least, not quite the level of interest that stars like Shaq, A.I. and Yao would generate. Hall of Fame President John Doleva, however, has said the decisions weren't driven by marketing.
Whatever the motivation, we're here now, which means we're all but assured a Shaq speech at the Hall this summer ... and, judging by the way he held court on Friday, that figures to be quite an event:
Iverson made seven All-NBA teams and 11 All-Star teams, won four scoring titles and one MVP award, ranks in the top 25 in NBA history in per-game scoring and total points, and made an indelible mark on the culture of the game, but as SB Nation's Tom Ziller noted in September, the "secretive voting body in charge of the Hall" might not be so thrilled about ushering A.I. into Springfield.

Who would've thought that North Carolina State University's Anthony "Cat" Barber would be the current leading scorer in the Atlantic Coast Conference. To those who've followed his career thus far, it comes as no surprise. Barber is easily the one of the fastest point guards in college basketball today, hence the nickname “Cat.
Sharing his hometown of Hampton, Virginia is not all Barber has in common with NBA Legend, Allen Iverson. The comparison should come as no surprise when you see how easily he takes his man off the dribble, finishes around the rim, and showcases his toughness. However, the question of "What else can he do...?" has always lingered. During his freshman and sophomore year, he averaged a combined 10.3 points per game. Currently, as a junior, Barber is averaging an amazing 23.2ppg. One of the main contributions to this more than doubled ppg average is an obviously improved mid-range jumper that complements his quickness. So far this season, not only has Barber become a better shooter, but he's also fine tuned a few other aspects of his game.
Barber has had some notable moments and has proven his value in a number of scenarios which include: P&R; Situations; Transition; Spot Up; and Hand Off. What is impressive about this is these are all situations frequently used in today's NBA, especially P&R;! With Barber's ability to knock down the short jumper, drive to the basket or pass to the roll man, he provides a number of outcomes that would be tough for any defense to read. He's also proven that he's an excellent spot-up shooter. In addition, Barber is equally as good on the defensive end in the scenarios listed.
Overall, Barber possesses a dynamic mixture of coveted attributes that would help him be successful in the NBA. Not only does he have a quickness comparable to Allen Iverson he has the elite end-to-end speed, similar Washington Wizard John Wall, which enables him to play well going down hill in the half-court setting. If selected by the right team Barber could be utilized in a way similarly to Indiana Pacer's George Hill. As a lead guard teamed up with a playmaking shooting guard, this would allow Barber to utilize his strengths of driving the ball and getting out in transition. He's already shocked the collegiate world, so don't be surprised when he does the same when he gets to the league!

Allen Ezail Iverson (born June 7, 1975) is an American professional basketball player, playing both the point guard and shooting guard positions. Iverson attended Bethel High School and was a dual-sport athlete; he earned The Associated Press High School Player of the Year award in both football and basketball, and won the Division AAA Virginia State Championship in both sports. After high school, Iverson attended Georgetown University for two years, where he set the school record for career scoring average (22.9 points per game) and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards both years.
Following two successful years at Georgetown, Iverson declared eligibility for the 1996 NBA Draft, and was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers with the number one pick. He was named the NBA Rookie of the Year in the 1996–97 season. Iverson is an eleven-time NBA All-Star which includes winning the All-Star MVP award in 2001 and 2005.
Winning the NBA scoring title during the 1998–99, 2000–01, 2001–02 and 2004–05 seasons, Iverson was one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, despite his small stature (listed at 6 feet, 0 inches). His regular season career scoring average of 26.7 points per game ranks sixth all-time, and his playoff career scoring average of 29.7 points per game is second only to Michael Jordan. Iverson was also the NBA Most Valuable Player of the 2000–01 season and led his team to the 2001 NBA Finals the same season. Iverson represented the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics, winning the bronze medal. He also played for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies, before returning to the 76ers for part of the 2009–10 season.

Kevin Maurice Garnett (born May 19, 1976) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays power forward for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA). In high school, Garnett was a 1995 McDonald's All-American at Farragut Career Academy and won a national player of the year award. Garnett entered the 1995 NBA Draft, where he was selected with the 5th overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves and became the first NBA player drafted directly out of high school in 20 years.
Garnett made an immediate impact with the Minnesota Timberwolves leading them to eight-consecutive playoff appearances. In 2004, Garnett led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals and was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the 2003–04 season. Since his second season in the NBA, Garnett has been named to 14 All-Star Games, winning the All-Star MVP award in 2003, and is currently tied for 3rd-most All-Star selections in NBA history. He was awarded the regular season's NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the 2007–08 season and has been a nine-time member of the All-NBA Teams selection and a twelve-time member of the All-Defensive Teams selection. The comparison should come as no surprise when you see how easily he takes his man off the dribble, finishes around the rim, and showcases his toughness. However, the question of "What else can he do...?" has always lingered. During his freshman and sophomore year, he averaged a combined 10.3 points per game. Currently, as a junior, Barber is averaging an amazing 23.2ppg. One of the main contributions to this more than doubled ppg average is an obviously improved mid-range jumper that complements his quickness. So far this season, not only has Barber become a better shooter, but he's also fine tuned a few other aspects of his game. Barber has had some notable moments and has proven his value in a number of scenarios which include: P&R; Situations; Transition; Spot Up; and Hand Off. What is impressive about this is these are all situations frequently used in today's NBA, especially P&R;! With Barber's ability to knock down the short jumper, drive to the basket or pass to the roll man, he provides a number of outcomes that would be tough for any defense to read. He's also proven that he's an excellent spot-up shooter. In addition, Barber is equally as good on the defensive end in the scenarios listed. Overall, Barber possesses a dynamic mixture of coveted attributes that would help him be successful in the NBA. Not only does he have a quickness comparable to Allen Iverson he has the elite end-to-end speed, similar Washington Wizard John Wall, which enables him to play well going down hill in the half-court setting. If selected by the right team Barber could be utilized in a way similarly to Indiana Pacer's George Hill. As a lead guard teamed up with a playmaking shooting guard, this would allow Barber to utilize his strengths of driving the ball and getting out in transition. He's already shocked the collegiate world, so don't be surprised when he does the same when he gets to the league! -

They were joined at the announcement by Yao Ming, who was not officially anounced as a finalist on Friday, but who had previously been nominated for enshrinement through the Hall's International Committtee, and will join them in consideration for a spot in this summer's class.
The three stars became eligible for induction this season thanks to a pair of calls made last year by the Hall's decision-makers. First, they determined that Iverson's 10-game post-NBA stint playing in Turkey didn't count as a full season of professional play, meaning that A.I. — who didn't officially announce his retirement until October 2013, but who played his final NBA game in February 2010 — met the criteria of being "fully retired for five years before being eligible for Enshrinement." Then, they changed that guideline altogether, reducing the waiting period from five years to four years and opening the door to nomination for O'Neal and Yao, both of whom played their last NBA game during the 2010-11 season.

As expected, when the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced the finalists for enshrinement in the Hall's Class of 2016 during media day at All-Star Weekend in Toronto, Shaquille O'Neal and Allen Iverson headlined the list of luminaries
They were joined at the announcement by Yao Ming, who was not officially anounced as a finalist on Friday, but who had previously been nominated for enshrinement through the Hall's International Committtee, and will join them in consideration for a spot in this summer's class.
The three stars became eligible for induction this season thanks to a pair of calls made last year by the Hall's decision-makers. First, they determined that Iverson's 10-game post-NBA stint playing in Turkey didn't count as a full season of professional play, meaning that A.I. — who didn't officially announce his retirement until October 2013, but who played his final NBA game in February 2010 — met the criteria of being "fully retired for five years before being eligible for Enshrinement." Then, they changed that guideline altogether, reducing the waiting period from five years to four years and opening the door to nomination for O'Neal and Yao, both of whom played their last NBA game during the 2010-11 season.

Who would've thought that North Carolina State University's Anthony "Cat" Barber would be the current leading scorer in the Atlantic Coast Conference. To those who've followed his career thus far, it comes as no surprise. Barber is easily the one of the fastest point guards in college basketball today, hence the nickname “Cat.
Sharing his hometown of Hampton, Virginia is not all Barber has in common with NBA Legend, Allen Iverson. The comparison should come as no surprise when you see how easily he takes his man off the dribble, finishes around the rim, and showcases his toughness. However, the question of "What else can he do...?" has always lingered. During his freshman and sophomore year, he averaged a combined 10.3 points per game. Currently, as a junior, Barber is averaging an amazing 23.2ppg. One of the main contributions to this more than doubled ppg average is an obviously improved mid-range jumper that complements his quickness. So far this season, not only has Barber become a better shooter, but he's also fine tuned a few other aspects of his game.
Barber has had some notable moments and has proven his value in a number of scenarios which include: P&R; Situations; Transition; Spot Up; and Hand Off. What is impressive about this is these are all situations frequently used in today's NBA, especially P&R;! With Barber's ability to knock down the short jumper, drive to the basket or pass to the roll man, he provides a number of outcomes that would be tough for any defense to read. He's also proven that he's an excellent spot-up shooter. In addition, Barber is equally as good on the defensive end in the scenarios listed.
Overall, Barber possesses a dynamic mixture of coveted attributes that would help him be successful in the NBA. Not only does he have a quickness comparable to Allen Iverson he has the elite end-to-end speed, similar Washington Wizard John Wall, which enables him to play well going down hill in the half-court setting. If selected by the right team Barber could be utilized in a way similarly to Indiana Pacer's George Hill. As a lead guard teamed up with a playmaking shooting guard, this would allow Barber to utilize his strengths of driving the ball and getting out in transition. He's already shocked the collegiate world, so don't be surprised when he does the same when he gets to the league!

He'll be in Oakland launching treys with defending champion Jeff Hornacek, Mike Bibby, Hubert Davis, Dirk Nowitzki, Terry Porter and Bob Sura. But more importantly, he'll be in the East's starting backcourt with former Temple star Eddie Jones.

"I want to run the show," Iverson said. "Eric Snow gets to run the show here. I don't mind. I want to have fun, show people I can play the point. And I can play it."

Two wildly popular basketball icons—one a pint-sized backcourt scorer, the other a 50-gallon drum of low-post diesel—have taken a major step toward entering the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame announced at its annual All-Star Weekend press event Friday that Allen Iverson and Shaquille O’Neal are the headliners in the 2016 class of finalists for induction. Final selections for induction will be made during the NCAA Final Four in April.
Iverson, 40, was a nine-time All-Star and four-time scoring champion who led the Sixers to the 2001 Finals. He retired from the NBA in 2010 with career averages of 26.7 PPG and 6.2 APG over 14 seasons before continuing his career overseas.
O’Neal, 43, won four titles with the Lakers and Heat, earning 15 All-Star selections, an MVP and three Finals MVP awards before retiring in 2011. He averaged 23.7 PPG, 10.9 RPG and 2.3 BPG during a 19-year career.
The contrasts between the two legends were evident when they were welcomed to a stage that was littered with Hall of Famers like Oscar Robertson, Isiah Thomas and Reggie Miller. Iverson struck a purposefully casual look, dressed in a blue Reebok T-shirt, gold chains, jeans and a navy New York Yankees hat. It was like any other day in our newsroom.
I was hanging out in our news director Tom Stathakes' office when someone came in and said that Allen Iverson was holding a press conference within the hour outside the Sixers locker room, which is located a level below our Wells Fargo Center newsroom.
Four days earlier the Sixers had been eliminated from the NBA playoffs and Iverson had yet to speak to reporters since the humiliating 33-point loss to the Celtics. Stathakes without missing a beat told me, "Why don't you ask him why he doesn't show up at practice."
So that is the origin of the now infamous "practice" press conference, which was 10 years ago on Monday. I was the person who initiated the practice questioning to Iverson. Remarkably the press conference and the 24 references by Iverson to the word "practice" remains one of the most memorable pressers in sports history. How many times have you seen people mock Iverson's practice rant? Heck Larry Brown did it two weeks ago when he was named Head Coach at SMU.
The press conference lasted 31 minutes and for a good 25 minutes Iverson was combative, heartfelt, honest and pure A.I., which made for great television. We carried the press conference live on Comcast SportsNet during Daily News Live and into Sportsnite. After a few minutes addressing the season and the loss to the Celtics, my question about Allen's practice habits stirred the pot. We had an exchange back and forth and before you knew it, the 15 or so reporters in attendance started digging further into "practice." Iverson was a year removed from being named league MVP and leading the 76ers to the NBA finals, and he felt he didn't need to answer questions about his practice habits because of what he brought to the games. No argument there but I do believe that Allen had the ability to make his teammates better and set a better example for his teammates.
It never happened.
The A.I era moved on without a championship and I can only image how many times Iverson has been asked or heard someone say "practice"? It didn't define his career but it will forever be part of the Allen Iverson mystique, which was tumultuous just like the press conference.
