Baby GoPro Adventure - Noah's First Holiday Wanted to make a film with my son on his first ever holiday, capture a new perspective and remember the fun and experiences of traveling with 7 month old. Was an amazing holiday and would really recommend Benidorm(Spain) for families and all age groups, they really have some thing for everyone. Filming with a 7 month old Filming an infant has some difficulties but can be a lot of fun. One difficultly is putting on the head mount, if baby is tried or hungry there is just no joy, when doing this I found the best thing to do was to try and distract him with a toy (an iPad works well too) but once its on he's good to go. A 7 month old has fairly good neck strength and can cope with the weight of a GoPro on his head but I had put it on him at 5 months and he didn't like and and didn't stay on him to long. A 7 month old just wants to grab everything and put it in their mouth, playing with the camera can be a fun shot, but if your not looking for that shot eventually he will get board and his attention will go on something else. GoPro resolution, 2.7k vrs 50fps I wanted all the footage to be 1080 in post so 720 wasn’t an option. On the GoPro 3+ you can shoot 50fps at 1080 or you can shoot a 2.7k at 25fps. Every time I set a shot up was faced with the decision:- -Am I going to have to slow this down? -Will I have to crop this? Most of the holiday I had it on 2.7k, the only two shots I slowed down was when I threw Noah into the Air. I soon realised the difference between filming an and infant and extreme sports is, baby’s don't move that fast. The only shot I forced to cropped was the pram getting wheeled down the main street in Benidorm, the reason i did this was the Goose neck mount had dropped down to an angle with the bouncing of the pram, I had to rotate the shot in post about 20 degrees and zoom in to compensate for it. Photos The GoPro is a brilliant camera to take on a trip for photos, the quality is amazing and it so handy for just point and shoot. One of the things I found my self doing a lot was connecting via iPhone all to view and download the photos, it a great thing to do when on holiday and then being able to post them in Social Media Sites. There are no examples in the video of photographs but thought it was worth a mention. Framing shots Before the app and a screen was available for the GoPro compossing the shot was all guess work. I was using the iPhone app to frame shots, the problem with doing this is it can be difficult when out with a infant on the go and it kills the GoPro battery when the wifi is left on. Found myself having to use this more and more though out the holiday, the shot where i throw Noah up in the air I completely missed it twice and ended up having to practice it with the visual in front of me, put the head mount on and sat at the side of the pool pretending I was going to throw my iPhone up in the air, did I look silly, it think I did. Editing Everything is shot using protune to capture as much detail as possible. When you bring this footage into post, your first initial reaction is this doesn’t look that great. When you start colouring it you really start seeing the detail and it is a really great way to shoot (if you know what you are doing in post). A shot in particular was the under the see with the fish swimming about, when you see the raw footage its very much very difficult to see everything but in post the detail you can bring out is amazing. One of the major things I gained from this project is I really need to develop my skills in colouring footage and experiment with different styles, if anyone has any good tutorials please copy and paste them into the comments. Low light GoPro definition: “The camera will automatically adjust fps to achieve the optimal exposure and best results.” I had this setting on the whole time only reading up now what this actually does, sounds like it’s and automatic shutter speed while recording, if I had knew this before I was shooting I might have though when setting up a shot. A example of this in use is the opening shot coming out of the tunnel and you can see the camera adjusting while recording to the daylight. Great function and note is only available on certain resolutions. Call to actions This is my first time doing this, been reading a lot on how to get more subscribers and increase views on youtube, a major tip advised is put ‘call to actions’ at the end of your video. This is a fair bit of work at the end of a video when you think it's finished and can be quite difficult to get motivated to do this when you have just finished your edit, but i’ll let you know if it was worth it.
