John Prine (born October 10, 1946) is an American country/folk singer-songwriter. He has been active as a composer, recording artist, and live performer since the early 1970s.
Born and raised in Maywood, Illinois, Prine learned to play the guitar at the age of 14. Subsequently serving in West Germany with the U.S. armed forces, by the late 1960s he had moved to Chicago, where he worked as a mailman, writing and singing songs as a hobby. Becoming a part of the city's folk revival, he was discovered by Kris Kristofferson, resulting in the production of Prine's self-titled debut album through Atlantic Records in 1971. After receiving critical acclaim, Prine focused on his musical career, recording three more albums for Atlantic. He then signed to Asylum Records, where he recorded an additional three albums.
In 1984 he co-founded Oh Boy Records, an independent record label with whom he would release most of his subsequent albums. After his battle with squamous cell cancer in 1998, Prine's vocals deepened into a gravel-voice, resulting in the award-winning album Fair & Square (2005).

"Rhino's Great Days: The John Prine Anthology is an excellent summary of John Prine's prime period, from his sublime 1971 eponymous debut to 1991's Missing Years. This (appropriately) draws heavily from his early recordings (including the aforementioned debut), but it also does a terrific job of finding songs on uneven albums, while giving weight to such classic albums as Bruised Orange. Although those previously mentioned albums are all worthwhile on their own terms (as are many of Prine's other records), this provides a nearly flawless recap of his career -- so much so that it's not only for neophytes, but also reminds longtime fans why they loved him in the first place." ---- Allmusic Illegal Smile -- 0:00 Automobile -- 3:11 Killing The Blues -- 7:35 Sam Stone -- 12:13 ...

Old Prine song about the horrors of strip mining in Kentucky
"Hello in there" is from John Prine's debut album, "John Prine" (1971) Old age and loneliness, written about an old couple, is a theme relatively unexplored by songwriters (with the notable exception of Jacques Brel, "Les Vieux".) What's amazing is how it rings so true despite being written by a 25-year old. This really is a deeply sad and human song. Not just that people work hard their whole lives and then can't even expect acknowledgement of their existence once their greatest accomplishments are behind them, but that time numbs us to life. Even a cut as deep as losing a son eventually is just worn away by the tides of time. John Prine cuts to the soul of humanity like no other.
From the album, "The Missing Years" (1991), "The Sins of Memphisto" is one heck of a verbal workout by John Prine, a brilliant man with a pen and a guitar. The word "Memphisto" came about as the result of an incorrect blending of the names "Memphis, Egypt" (ancient city which was constructed to house such things as a pyramid or a sphinx) and Mephistopholes (the devil) My favorite interpretation of this song is that Memphisto (the devil) represents one's inner demons or issues that are driving that person to distraction. The intent is to become the spectator of this phenomenon rather than the participator. Paradoxically however, "nothing can stop" the sins of Memphisto. The expression, "Exactly Odo Quasi Modo" is a play on words that Prine conjured up in his mind years before writ...

Another video of Ariana Gillis & Co(www.arianagillis.com) killing a John Prine cover of "Paradise". Shot at the ever so cinematic & cozy Station Coffee House & Gallery in Brantford. I love the moment that you see the train pull in the back. Again, this was never intended to be cut the full way through(only snippets for her EPK), but how could one not want to share this version of the song with the world? Shot with the 5D Mark II & the 7D, it was just Mark & I doing our all too familiar dance to get as much variety & storytelling as possible. Cheers!
There are many stories about how this song was created. Peter wrote it with John Prine back in the '80s, around the time the two of them also wrote "Wonderful 99" together. Prine released his version of this song on a live record; Peter never put it on an album. This was recorded in March 2004 at a house concert in Chapel Hill, NC.

Black faces pressed against the glass
Where rain has pressed it's weight
Wind blown scarves in top down cars
All share one western trait
Sadness leaks through tear-stained cheeks
From winos to dime-store Jews
Probably don't know they give me
These late John Garfield blues
Midnight fell on Franklin Street
And the lamppost bulbs were broke
For the life of me, I could not see
But I heard a brand new joke
Two men were standing upon a bridge
One jumped and screamed you lose
And just left the odd man holding
Those late John Garfield blues
An old man sleeps with his conscience at night
Young kids sleep with their dreams
While the mentally ill sit perfectly still
And live through life's in-betweens
I'm going away to the last resort
In week or two real soon
Where the fish don't bite but once a night
By the cold light of the moon
The horses scream- the nightmares dream
And the dead men all wear shoes
'Cause everybody's dancin'
Those late John Garfield blues
