Katutubo Bugkalot
THE story of the Bugkalot, the last of the Philippine headhunting tribes, is a chronicle of loss. Like many indigenous peoples in many parts of the world, they have been dispossessed of their land, their culture destroyed, and the forests from which they derive sustenance exploited by outsiders.
Overwhelmed by settlers from the Cordillera, the once-feared Bugkalot are now a minority in the Caraballo mountain range which they call their ancestral home. But since the 1970s, many of them have been reduced to being sharecroppers or farm workers of the more affluent Igorot settlers. Today, what little they have left is threatened to be devastated by a mining company.
In 2002, the PCIJ released a documentary and a book on indigenous Filipinos which featured the Bugkalot and Igorot of Nueva Vizcaya, the Tagbanua of Coron, Palawan, and the Manobo of Mount Apo. In the places the PCIJ crew visited, the spectacle was one of impoverished peoples ranged against forces much more powerful than them — mining in Nueva Vizcaya, mass tourism in Palawan, a geothermal plant on Mount Apo.
But beyond their economic and cultural dislocation, the PCIJ saw tribal communities engaged in a robust struggle to preserve their land and their way of life. Katutubo: Memory of Dances looks at them as victors rather than as victims, and gives voice to the hopes of indigenous peoples that they will “relive the memory of their dances not on a video screen or a museum but with the soles of their feet firmly touching the sacred ground that has been the homeland of their ancestors since time immemorial.”

Crew Show 2013 - Igorot Dance
The word Igorot is the name given to an ethnic group, derived from the archaic Tagalog term for "mountain people". I'm wearing a "Bahag" (G-String or Loin Cloth), a type of garment mostly for men. It's a long piece of cloth wrapped around the waist and between the legs The Dance and Music Title: GOLPIADU MAKIMALLO (Sung by Grace Nono) Golpiadu comes from the Spanish word "golpe" which means "blow," in this context, the singer's first blow, prayer, greeting, to begin the rendition of a "verso" or chant in meter and rhyme. "Makimallo" comes from the root word "allo" which means "benevolence;" in this case, the act of imploring and acknowledging God's benevolence. This piece is inspired by the traditions of the people from the northern province of the Philippines.- published: 20 Nov 2013

The Igorot's Way 11
This is how the Igorot's traditional way of doing their culture. This is the first butchering of pigs and there will be more. A family member(Father and grandfather died yesterday evening, but he is still considered as sick and not yet proclaimed dead by the elders. Usually a dead is proclaimed dead the day before the body is buried. However, this time they will have to wait for a child coming from abroad so I don't know when they will say the dead is really dead. For now, he is considered to be sick and is on his bed, even though people are already singing songs that signals someone is dead.- published: 15 Dec 2013

People's barricade against mining
People's barricade against mining
NATIONAL FACT-FINDING AND SOLIDARITY MISSION IN MINING-AFFECTED COMMUNITIES IN NUEVA VIZCAYA Dupax del Norte Team September 17-20, 2013 On May 8, 2013, indigenous peoples Bugkalot and Igorot led by Alliance of Upland Barangays for Sustainable Development (AUBD), Kasibu Intertribal Response for Ecological Development (KIRED), Youth Against Mining (YAM) and Alliance of Multi-Sectoral Group Against Mining (ALMUSEGAM) began to set up simultaneous barricades in three areas in Dupax del Norte and in two areas in Kasibu, both municipalities of Nueva Vizcaya. These barricades is the communities' defense of their lands and livelihood from the entry of Royalco Philippines Incorporated, an Australian mining company that has started gold and copper exploration in Nueva Vizcaya. On June 10, 2013, Royalco filed civil suits against 15 leaders and members of the barricades. A Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) was filed against Guillermo Contales, Pacita Balinggan, Gessler Tactac, Janet Cuyahon, Denver Vicente, Osmar Osingat, Fr. Jaime Noto, Timoteo Dugay, Solomon Dugay, Bongbong Dugay, Santos Yongaan, Juanito Alucios, Dennis Guillermo and two others referred only as 'John Does' by the Regional Trial Court of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. Around 300 soldiers from the 86th Infantry Battalion of the 5th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army were deployed in the barricade areas, inciting fear among locals. The military along with members of the Philippine National Police went to the upland villages to dismantle the barricades on June 12, 2013 on the basis of the TRO filed by Royalco, but the communities defied the attempt of the state forces to remove the barricades. The said elements also threatened the people that they will search every house without warrant. more news: http://www.kodao.org/stories/mission-statement-national-fact-finding-and-solidarity-mission-nueva-vizcaya- published: 23 Sep 2013
