Considerations when Laying Lawn or Turf

When you are laying new turf in your yard, there are some things that you will need to consider: 

1. First in mind should be how much use the lawn will get.  Lawns that are more heavily used will need a tougher turf than lawns that will get little use.

Types of Lawn and Turf

There are two types of grasses – warm season grasses and cool season grasses. 

• Warm season grasses: grasses that grow over the summer months and become dormant during the cooler months. They are able to repair themselves after damage due to their creeping growth habits but this same habit means that they are able to enter garden beds if they aren’t kept properly maintained. Warm season grasses include soft leaf buffalo, kikuyu and fine leaf couch grasses. Sir Walter soft leaf buffalo is perhaps the best known warm season grass.
  
  
• Cool season grasses: non-creeping grasses that grow in an upright fashion. They provide a luxurious lawn that is deep green in colour and grows all year-round. Cool season grasses do require more water than warm season grasses and because they do not self-repair, they need to be oversowed or re-turfed if damage appears. Cool season grasses include tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and fine ryegrass/fine fescue blend

Synthetic Turf – Another Option
