Victory At Sea - Melanesian Nightmare - Episode 13
The Allies are victorious in New Guinea as they repel the Japanese. They thus bring the fight through a series of "island-hopping" offensives using a new ship -- the slow but vital LST. The price paid is great on both sides, but as Japanese casualties increase in their never-ending losing battle against the Allied onslaught, their homeland only hears news of their victory being broadcast by radio.

The Melanesian Brotherhood is a religious order with about 600 members based at Tabalia on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. This song was used in the opening minutes of film the Thin Red Line. I have included some images of Tabalia, Honiara and of the Solomons violent past including wrecked warplanes and Red Beach where the Americans landed. The Melanesian Brotherhood is featured in my book 'Blue Peter: Behind The Badge' Chapter 27. Now also available as an eBook on Amazon Kindle. Finding good clips and info regarding these songs are hard to come by so I thought I would share and learn some Adobe Premiere at the same time.
These songs were used in Terrence Malick's film, 'The Thin Red Line', arguably the greatest anti-war film ever created.
The first and last renditions are featured in the film. The first three renditions are found on the no-longer-available CD "Melanesian Choirs: The Blessed Islands". The last audio clip is an orchestral rendition adapted by composer Hans Zimmer for the movie's soundtrack.
To the best of my research the words to " Jisas yu holem hand blong mi" are:
Jesus is watching over me;
Wherever I may go he is right beside me;
Jesus is watching over me;
No matter what I do his love will never cease;
My saviour and my keeper beside me;
All the blessings he has provided me;
He is there to comfort and guide me;
And his love will never cease.
'Pray for Us' appears to be the same song and I suspect might even be a transcription error on the CD track list.
' God yu tekkem laef blong mi' is from the hymn ' Take My Life and Let It Be' by Frances R. Havergal, (1874):
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee;
Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee;
Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise;
Take my intellect and use
Every powr as Thou shalt choose.
Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.
Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store;
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

This is a documentary dedicated to our melanesian brothers telling about Homo Denisova, an Homo Ancestor we can only find in their genes. Melanesians and Australoids own up to 6% of his DNA and up to 40% of his HLA. Further studies have been made since this documentary was released:
"Comparing the genomes of the Denisovan and modern humans from around the world allows the identification of DNA segments particular to the Denisovans, and to modern humans.
Thus the Denisovan individual probably had dark hair, eyes and skin. Amongst a number of novel mutations in modern humans, 8 are associated with brain function and nervous system development, and 34 with diseases, including 4 affecting the skin and 6 affecting the eye."

We see also just how Japan's people are suffering in defeat through a very touching scene of a massive funeral at the conclusion of this segment, providing a balance of how universal grief truly is.

By RUNOKO RASHIDI
DEDICATED TO SISTER CHARSEE McINTYRE
PART 1
MELANESIA: THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
Melanesia (the Black islands of the South Pacific) has been described as the eastern flank of the African world, an expression of ages past when an uninterrupted belt of Black people stretched across Africa, Eurasia, Australia, Oceanica and ancient America. In 1545 Spain made a claim on New Guinea, the largest and most populous island in Melanesia. Indeed, New Guinea is the largest island in the world after Greenland. It is tremendously wealthy in mineral resources, including uranium, copper cobalt, silver, gold, manganese, iron and oil. In 1545 Spain made a claim on the island and called it Nueva Guinea because of the striking resemblance between Melanesians and West Africans. Other Melanesian islands include New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, New Ireland and New Britain.
Split into two by colonial design, New Guinea has until recently contained a racially homogeneous population of five to six million Africoid people. The eastern half of the island became independent in 1975 under the name of Papua New Guinea. In a 1976 interview, Foreign Minister Ben Tanggahma of Papua New Guinea insisted that:
"Africa is our motherland. All of the Black populations which settled in Asia over the hundreds of thousands of years, came undoubtedly from the African continent. In fact, the entire world was populated from Africa. Hence, we the Blacks in Asia and the Pacific today descend from proto-African peoples. We were linked to Africa in the past. We are linked to Africa in the present. We will be linked to Africa in the future."
The western half of New Guinea, however, along with a significant portion of the island's total population, has been seized by Indonesia. Indonesians generally have a condescending view of Melanesians and consider them their racial inferiors. Under Indonesian rule since 1963, the Melanesians of New Guinea, known as Kanaks, want their island to become an independent country run by and for Melanesians. Their struggle continues.

After decades of maintaining a relatively neutral stance, the Papua New Guinea government will finally make a strong representation to Indonesia to raise concerns over alleged human rights abuses committed by the Indonesian military in the West Papua region.
Prime Minister Peter O'Neill said in an interview with EMTV on Friday that the Foreign Affairs Department will deliver a diplomatic note expressing the concerns of Papua New Guinea citizens over the two Melanesian provinces of Papua and West Papua to the Indonesian government.
The response comes days after representatives of more than 4000 Lutheran women called on Peter O'Neill to look into the difficulties faced by West Papuans.
The public appeal for government attention to the West Papuan cause was made by Rose Muingepe, a Lutheran Women's representative who was attending a conference in Mumeng outside of Lae City.
"We are asking the government to raise the plight of the West Papuans on the floor of Parliament. We know that women are being raped, men are being tortured and we want our government to pay attention to the issue.
Diplomatic note
Prime Minister O'Neill said a diplomatic note would be passed on to the Indonesian government through PNG's Jakarta embassy.
"We need to respect international conventions made in organisations like the United Nations. We also need to respect that Indonesia is a part of those organisations.
"Through those conventions we will deliver a diplomatic note raising the concerns of our citizens over some of the reports that we are getting from West Papua on human rights abuses."
This is the first time, in years that a Papua New Guinean prime minister has acknowledged human rights abuses in Papua.
Prime Minster O'Neill will also be bringing the West Papua issue to the attention of the Indonesian President in an upcoming democracy conference in Bali later this year.
At last month's Pacific Islands Forum, Pacific Scoop's Henry Yamo reported following an interview with Vanuatu Deputy Prime Minister Ham Lini that Pacific leaders did not back Vanuatu's supports for West Papua.
