Wee Willie Harris (born Charles William Harris, 25 March 1933, Bermondsey, London) is a British rock and roll singer. He is best known for his energetic stage shows and TV performances since the 1950s, when he was known as "Britain's wild man of rock 'n' roll".

Life and career

Working a job as a pudding mixer at Peek Freans' London bakery, Harris turned professional musician after realising he could make more money singing. He began performing at The 2i's Coffee Bar in Soho, London, In November 1957 he was picked by the TV producer, Jack Good, to appear in the BBC show ''Six-Five Special''. His appearances on the show led to concerns being expressed in the media about the BBC's role in "promoting teenage decadence". His debut single, "Rockin' At the 2 I's", was released on the Decca label in December 1957, and was followed by several others, although none reached the UK Singles Chart.

He became a popular performer on TV shows and in live performances, and was known for his unrelenting energy, multicoloured dyed hair (often green, orange or pink), and clothes including "larger-than-life stage jackets that looked like the coat hanger was still inside, tight drainpipe trousers, and a huge polka-dot bow tie". Another critic wrote that: "He gyrates like an exploding Catherine wheel, emitting growls, squeals and what sounds like severe hiccupping". Paul McCartney and John Lennon reportedly queued for his autograph when he played in Liverpool in 1958.

In May 1960 he supported Conway Twitty, Freddy Cannon and Johnny Preston on a UK tour.

William Charles Harris (born June 22, 1978 in Cairo, Georgia) is a Major League Baseball outfielder and infielder who plays for the New York Mets. Harris is known for his quick feet and base-stealing abilities, with currently 94 career stolen bases. Harris was formerly a member of the Baltimore Orioles (), Chicago White Sox (-), Boston Red Sox (), Atlanta Braves (), and Washington Nationals (-). He bats left-handed and throws right-handed. He attended Kennesaw State University and lives in Cairo, Georgia during the offseason. According to Major League Baseball, Willie Harris has a recorded height of 5'9" and weighs 195 pounds.

Career

Versatility and speed are his biggest strengths, as Harris has the ability to play all three outfield positions as well as second base, where he started 28 games in 2005. He started two games at shortstop in 2005. He can also play third base. His most productive season came in , when he posted career-numbers in average (.262), RBI (27), runs (68), hits (107), doubles (15) and at-bats (409). Harris also notched a career high of 19 stolen bases. In 2005, he stole 10 bases in 56 games.

In the 2005 playoffs, Harris went 2-for-2 in the postseason with an RBI, one stolen base, and one run scored. Harris's successful pinch-hit single in Game 4 of the 2005 World Series against the Houston Astros would prove to be decisive after Harris scored on an RBI single by Jermaine Dye. Not only was the run the game-winner, it was the only run which would be scored in the Series-clinching Game 4.

2006

The Boston Red Sox signed Harris to a one-year, split contract. He went to spring training camp as a non-roster invitee, but he was figured to have a strong chance to make the Opening Day roster. On April 20, Harris had his contract purchased by the Boston Red Sox and was added to the 40-man roster. Harris was designated for assignment on July 18. Three days later, he cleared waivers and was assigned to the Pawtucket Red Sox.

2007

The Atlanta Braves and Oakland Athletics completed a trade on April 29, as the Braves sent outfielder Ryan Langerhans to the A’s in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. To fill Langerhans' spot, Atlanta purchased the contract of Harris from Triple-A Richmond.

Harris went on to have a career year in 2007. He hit near .400 during the month of May and went in to the All-Star Break with a .342 average. He led the team with 17 stolen bases. On June 30, Willie Harris tied a career personal record with 3 stolen bases in a 6-5 win over the Marlins. He posted a remarkable night on July 21: In a 14-6 rout of the St. Louis Cardinals, Harris went 6-for-6 with four singles, two triples, six RBI, four runs scored, and a stolen base. He became just the second player in Atlanta history and the seventh in franchise history to have six hits in a game. But Harris' numbers in the second half of the season dropped precipitously. He had a .214 average, a .294 on base percentage, and a .354 slugging average after the all-star break.

On August 9, the Braves were beating the NL East-leading New York Mets 7-3 entering the bottom of the 9th at Shea Stadium. After Braves reliever Tyler Yates yielded three runs to bring the Mets within one, Óscar Villarreal came on to pitch. The first hitter he faced, first baseman Carlos Delgado, hit what appeared to be a solo home run to make it a tie game. Harris ranged back in left field, stopped just before the wall and jumped, robbing the home run and preserving the lead.

Harris was designated for assignment on December 4, 2007. Harris was not offered a new contract by the Braves and became a free agent on December 12, 2007.

2008-2009

On December 13, 2007, he signed with the Washington Nationals. He proved an effective insurance policy, playing second base, third base, shortstop and all three outfield positions over the course of the season. He was known for playing stellar defense, and made several outstanding athletic catches in the outfield. On August 22, , Willie hit his eleventh and twelfth home runs of the year, including his first career grand slam that gave the Nationals a 6-4 lead. He also hit a 2-run home run, collected 6 RBI to give him 38 for the season, scored 3 times, and stole a base in the Nationals' 13 to 5 win against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Harris finished the season with 13 home runs, six more than he hit in the previous seven years of his career combined.

During the 2008-2009 offseason, he signed a two-year contract with the Nationals, worth 3 million dollars(1.5 million per season). On April 13, 2009, Willie Harris was placed on the 15-day disabled list for a left oblique strain.

2010

On September 24, 2010, Harris hit the first inside-the-park home run in Nationals history against the Atlanta Braves.

2011

On January 14, 2011, Harris and the New York Mets agreed to a minor-league deal. According to reporter Anthony DiComo, Harris "is all but a lock to make the team in an arrangement that should net him between 250 and 400 plate appearances" in 2011. On January 17, 2011 the Mets and Harris made it official that he had signed a minor league contract with the team. He also got an invite to Spring Training.

On July 30th, against the Washington Nationals, the Mets were trailing 3-0 when Willie Harris came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. He struck out looking to end the game.

"Wee Willie Winkie" is a Scottish nursery rhyme, whose titular figure has become popular the world over as a personification of sleep. The poem, written by William Miller and titled "Willie Winkie", was first published in ''Whistle-binkie: Stories for the Fireside'' in 1841. It has a Roud Folk Song Index number of 13711.

Origins and meaning

The poem was written by William Miller (1810–72), first printed in ''Whistle-binkie: Stories for the Fireside'' in 1841 and re-printed in ''Whistle-Binkie; a Collection of Songs for the Social Circle'' published in 1873. In Jacobite songs Willie Winkie referred to King William III of England, but it seems likely that Miller was simply using the name rather than writing a Jacobite satire.

Such was the popularity of Wee Willie Winkie that the character has become one of several bedtime entities such as the Sandman, Ole Lukøje of Scandinavia, and Dormette of France.

Carlo Little (17 December 1938 — 6 August 2005) was a rock and roll drummer, based in the London nightclub scene in the 1960s. He played in an early version of The Rolling Stones. Little was also with Cyril Davies' All Stars and was the founding member of Screaming Lord Sutch's Savages.

Career

Born Carl O'Neil Little at the Queen Charlotte's Hospital, Shepherd's Bush, London, England, he was brought up and lived in Wembley, Middlesex for most of his life - his fellow townsmen included peers Keith Moon, Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts, all of whom would find fame with the same instrument. He was included in the evacuation of civilians during World War II as a child, and sent to relatives in Wales during the Blitz in London.

As a teenager he discovered Ted Heath and then skiffle music, especially Chris Barber and Lonnie Donegan. Skiffle inspired Little to join a band, Derek Addison's Rhythm Katz. By the late 1950s rock and roll had arrived in the United Kingdom, and Little became a fan of Chuck Berry and Little Richard, whose drummer Earl Palmer he was influenced by. Little found himself called up in 1958 to join the British National service, where he served in Kenya and Malta, and was singled out to become head drummer due to his loud playing. He was demobbed in 1960.

On his return to civilian life he met David Sutch and formed The Savages with amongst others Nicky Hopkins who lived locally. Screaming Lord Sutch and The Savages toured the UK and became known for their unique British rock and roll shows. The bulk of the band members, including Little, left in 1962 to join the Cyril Davies All Stars, and recorded a single "Country Line Special", an instrumental track which influenced Keith Richards and Ray Davies. He also played a few gigs with the young Rolling Stones and was asked by Brian Jones to join permanently before they hired Charlie Watts as their official drummer in January 1963. In 1998, during their European tour, he was invited as an official guest backstage at one of their Paris concerts.

Little continued to work as a session drummer throughout the 1960s having further success with The Flower Pot Men, as drummer on their hit single, "Let's Go To San Francisco". Now with a family, Little played in pub bands throughout the 1970s and 1980s, until he reformed the All Stars in 2000, which included Art Wood on vocals, Alec Chanter on lead guitar and vocals, Johnny Casanova on keyboards and vocals, Eddie Armer on harmonicas and fellow former Cyril Davies band member, Ricky Brown (aka Ricky Fenson), on bass. Carlo and his All Stars recorded an album, which also featured Ron Wood, Jeff Beck, Long John Baldry, Matthew Fisher and The Chanter Sisters. The album, entitled ''Never Stop Rockin''', (the title track penned by Little), could not be released until 2009, so he was unable to see the finished product.

Next to his musical activities, he worked as a bread salesman and entrepreneur until his retirement.

Little died of lung cancer in Cleadon, Tyne and Wear in 2005, at the age of 66. The Carlo Little All Stars album ''Never Stop Rockin''' was released by Angel Air Records in January 2009.
