"Whatever" is the third and final single by R&B quintet Ideal from their self-titled debut album, Ideal (1999). The song features guest vocals by Lil' Mo and additional vocals and writing credits by Robert "R.L." Huggar (credited as R.L.-oquent) from the R&B trio Next. It also features production by Eddie Berkeley, Kobie and Kier "KayGee" Gist of Naughty by Nature. In 2001, the song won an ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Award for "Award-Winning R&B/Hip-Hop Songs". To date, "Whatever" is the group's second and last-known successful single.

Background

A demo for the song was originally recorded by KayGee and R.L. in the former's New Jersey basement studio. When the duo heard that Ideal needed an uptempo song, the demo was given to them and later went on to be re-recorded at The Battery Studios in New York City. Maverick of Ideal confirmed that the need for an uptempo song was due to the fact that "summertime [was] coming up," and the group "just wanted to make a summertime jam [that people] could ride through the summer with." However, because the group's self-titled debut had already been completed and released months prior to the single's finalization, Ideal confirmed that "Whatever" would see a release on the "future pressings of the [album]."

Whatever (Ayumi Hamasaki song)

"Whatever" (stylized as "WHATEVER") is a song by Japanese recording artist Ayumi Hamasaki, taken from her second studio album Loveppears (1999). It was written by Hamasaki and produced by Max Matsuura. The song is a dance with elements of trance music. Like majority of the tracks from the album, "Whatever" was written in third person narrative, and all lyrically deal with themes of loneliness, chaos, confusion, and the burden of her responsibilities, aimed mostly towards her public image as an recording artist. It was released as the lead single from the album on 10 February 1999 by Avex Trax and Avex Taiwan.

Critical reception towards "Whatever" has been mixed; while critics commended Hamasaki's music change to dance music and the songs arrangement, "Whatever" was criticized for Hamasaki's vocal delivery and song writing. In Japan, "Whatever" became her single to reach the top five on the Oricon Singles Chart, peaking at number five. "Whatever" also reached number five on the Japanese Count Down TV chart. "Whatever" was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for shipments of 200,000 units.

Cyclophora annularia

The Mocha (Cyclophora annularia) is a moth of the Geometridae family. The species can be found in Europe. Their wingspan is 18 millimetres (0.71 in) to 22 millimetres (0.87 in). Adults are on wing from May to August depending on the location. The larvae feed on Maple tree leaves.

Mocha Island

Mocha (Spanish: Isla Mocha) is a small Chilean island located west of the coast of Arauco Province in the Pacific Ocean. The island is approximately 48 km² (19 sq mi) in area, with a small chain of mountains running roughly in north-south direction. In Mapuche mythology, the souls of dead people travel west to visit this island. The island today is home to the Mocha Island National Reserve, a nature reserve that covers approximately 45% of the island's surface. The island is noted as the location of numerous historic shipwrecks. The waters off the island are a popular place for recreational sea fishing.

History

The island was historically inhabited by an indigenous coastal population of Mapuches known as the Lafkenches. It was discovered by Juan Bautista Pastene September 10, 1544, and named Isla de San Nicolas de Tolentino.

According to Juan Ignacio Molina, the Dutch captain Joris van Spilbergen observed the use of chilihueques (a South American camelid) by native Mapuches of Mocha Island as plough animals in 1614.
