On this very special episode of Head 2 Head, presented by Tire Rack, we present a hypercar battle for the ages: the McLaren P1 versus the Porsche 918 Spyder. Both of these cars have carbon fiber tubs and body panels. Both have small displacement, high revving V-8s packed between their passenger compartments and rear axles. Both use twin-clutch transmissions, carbon ceramic brakes, and active aerodynamics. Both have roughly 900 hp. Both are plug-in hybrids. And today, with the help of pro racing driver Randy Pobst, we find out which one is fastest around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca!

On this week's Ignition, Carlos Lago has a second go at Porsche's 918 hypercar. The goal: to run the 918 through the full gauntlet of MT's instrumented testing, including 0-60, quarter mile, braking, figure 8, and a blistering real-time hot lap around Big Willow race track with pro driver Randy Pobst. Carlos also gets a rare chance to experience the 918's ancestor, the Porsche 959. The 959 was a remarkable piece of automobile history that was decades ahead of its time with much of it's technology only appearing in common vehicles within the last ten years or so. The 918 attempts something very similar, featuring very advanced technology, including a naturally aspirated V8 that works with a seamlessly integrated electric motor to provide extra boost. Can Porsche's new hypercar achieve the same effect that its predecessor did? Only time will tell, but stay tuned for the record-breaking review.

The plug-in hybrid, mid-engine hypercar: The Porsche 918 Spyder.
Tested by /DRIVE's Chris Harris at the Valencia circuit in the winter of 2013. The Porsche 918 Spyder has come a long way since when we first saw it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Competing against the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it is the cheapest of the trio of new hypercars at a base price of $845,000.
The engine weights 140 kg according to Porsche and it delivers 608 horsepower (453 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 528 N·m (389 lbf·ft) of maximum torque. This is supplemented by two electric motors delivering an additional 279 hp (208 kW) - One 154 hp electric motor drives the rear wheels in parallel with the engine and also serves as the main generator.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is a mid-engined sports car designed by Porsche and first shown as a concept at the 80th edition of the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. The Spyder is powered by a 3.4 litre V8 engine, developing 580 horsepower (430 kW), with three electric motors delivering an additional 218 horsepower (163 kW). It is the first plug-in hybrid car from Porsche. Porsche later announced a limited production of the vehicle.
At NAIAS 2011, Porsche unveiled the RSR racing variant of the 918, which combines hybrid technology first used in the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, with styling from the 918 Spyder.

James Douglas Muir "Jay" Leno /ˈlɛnoʊ/ (born April 28, 1950) is an American stand-up comedian and television host.
From 1992 to 2009, Leno was the host of NBC's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a primetime talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. (Eastern Time, UTC-5), also on NBC. After The Jay Leno Show was canceled in January 2010 amid a host controversy, Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010.
James "Jay" Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, in 1950. His mother, Catherine (née Muir; 1911–1993), a homemaker, was born in Greenock, Scotland, and came to the United States at age 11. Leno's father, Angelo (1910–1994), who worked as an insurance salesman, was born in New York to immigrants from Flumeri, Italy. Leno grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and although his high school guidance counselor recommended that he drop out of school, he later obtained a Bachelor's degree in speech therapy from Emerson College, where he started a comedy club in 1973. Leno's siblings include his late older brother, Patrick, who was a Vietnam veteran and a lawyer.

The goal: to run the 918 through the full gauntlet of MT's instrumented testing, including 0-60, quarter mile, braking, figure 8, and a blistering real-time hot lap around Big Willow race track with pro driver Randy Pobst. Carlos also gets a rare chance to experience the 918's ancestor, the Porsche 959. The 959 was a remarkable piece of automobile history that was decades ahead of its time with much of it's technology only appearing in common vehicles within the last ten years or so. The Porsche 918 Spyder Tested - CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS
The plug-in hybrid, mid-engine hypercar: The Porsche 918 Spyder. Tested by /DRIVE's Chris Harris at the Valencia circuit in the winter of 2013. The Porsche 918 Spyder has come a long way since when we first saw it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Competing against the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it is the cheapest of the trio of new hypercars at a base price of $845,000. The engine weights 140 kg according to Porsche and it delivers 608 horsepower (453 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 528 N·m (389 lbf·ft) of maximum torque. This is supplemented by two electric motors delivering an additional 279 hp (208 kW) - One 154 hp electric motor drives the rear wheels in parallel with the engine and also serves as the main generator. -

This beautiful Porsche 918 Spyder showed up the the Streetcar Takeover Atlanta, Georgia event to compete in both a drag racing and roll racing class! You typically don’t see one of these prestigious supercars trying their hand at the drag strip, but low and behold this guy wasn’t afraid to use the car to it’s full potential! This car is a hybrid powered vehicle, so the torque the electric motor provides off the line is PERFECT for stellar 60 foot times! Turbo Camaros, Corvette, Turbo Porsches, and a few others try their hand at showing who’s boss on the drag strip, but were likely quite surprised at the outcome of these races! Tested by /DRIVE's Chris Harris at the Valencia circuit in the winter of 2013. The Porsche 918 Spyder has come a long way since when we first saw it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010. Competing against the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it is the cheapest of the trio of new hypercars at a base price of $845,000.
The engine weights 140 kg according to Porsche and it delivers 608 horsepower (453 kW) at 8,500 rpm and 528 N·m (389 lbf·ft) of maximum torque. This is supplemented by two electric motors delivering an additional 279 hp (208 kW) - One 154 hp electric motor drives the rear wheels in parallel with the engine and also serves as the main generator.

You typically don’t see one of these prestigious supercars trying their hand at the drag strip, but low and behold this guy wasn’t afraid to use the car to it’s full potential! This car is a hybrid powered vehicle, so the torque the electric motor provides off the line is PERFECT for stellar 60 foot times! Turbo Camaros, Corvette, Turbo Porsches, and a few others try their hand at showing who’s boss on the drag strip, but were likely quite surprised at the outcome of these races! These guys even did a little roll racing while they were at it!
