An inside look at Metropolis Studios in West London from an entirely fresh perspective. Flight.

Previously a grand Victorian power station, Metropolis has become the studio home of many great recording artists, notably Freddie Mercury who recorded some of his greatest works on the Fazioli piano in Studio A (pictured 00:41).
At the turn of the twentieth century, the building hosted the power generators for West London's Tram network but fell into disuse after 1920. Following a masterful architectural conversion in 1989, the building assumed its current role as a major recording studio.
Metropolis features some of the finest studio space, recording technology, and production and mastering engineers in the world, and many of the biggest global music hits released every month pass through its doors. It is a monument to thriving creativity and excellence, all housed in a stunning architectural environment.

The world famous Metropolis studios, Music Gateway caught up with Miles Showell one of Metropolis's chief mastering engineer's and got his insight into his career and advice on mastering.
A team of world class, award winning mastering engineers supplying stereo & 5.1 surround mastering for CD, iTunes, vinyl, Blu-ray, DVD, DSD, and beyond.
5 mastering rooms featuring custom consoles, SADiE DAWs, Prism Convertors, including DSD, 2 x modified Neumann VSM 80s, PMC monitoring, utilising a broad selection of the highest quality digital and analogue equalisers, compressors, limiters and processing.
With 2 large recordings studios, 4 mixing rooms (stereo / 5.1), and a large selection of microphones to choose from, there is something for everyone at Metropolis. Occupying a Grade II listed former power station in Chiswick, West London, our studios evoke Fritz Lang's 1926 film vision of the future, after which they are named. The future is something Metropolis is all about.
They can record full band sessions, string sections (up to 16 piece), overdubs, Protools & Logic DAWs and have a wide range of analogue and digital tape machines available.
Mixing can be done on one of our four analogue mixing consoles. We can also mix to picture and offer Stereo and 5.1 mixing for PCM, SACD & DVD Audio, DVD & Blu-ray. Alongside these, we have four production & programming rooms which house a variety of world-renowned producers and mix engineers.
Metropolis is well renowned as a world class facility. They have recorded & mixed some of the most classic artists albums of all time at Metropolis including Queen, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Libertines, Lauren Hill, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, and Rihanna. However, they don't only work with major labels, global icons and household names. They are able to cater for smaller artists with development deals & private projects. We can tailor packages to suit your needs.

Metropolis Group
Metropolis Group is a music production and entertainment industry company established in 1989 by Gary Langan, Carey Taylor and Karin Clayton. It is located in the Powerhouse, a Grade II listed building, at 70 Chiswick High Road in Chiswick, London, England. Over the last twenty years the group has expanded and now consists of three principal divisions: Metropolis Studios, Metropolis Mastering, and Digital Media/Productions.
Metropolis Group was bought out on 31 May 2013 by MLML (Metropolis London Music Limited) by Ian Brenchley.
History of the Powerhouse
The Powerhouse was built in 1901 by a young architect William Curtis Green to power the trams of West London. This substantial building was conceived to be so large as to prevent any of the houses in the neighbourhood (which still tended to be large properties with influential owners) suffering from the vibration and dust caused by the steam powered generators. Due to competition from Lots Road power station in Chelsea, power was only generated until 1920 when the building was decommissioned and stripped of its equipment. Being mainly used as a storage facility, the Powerhouse gradually fell into disrepair.

Metropolis
A metropolis is a large city or urban area which is a significant economic, political, and cultural center for a country or region, and an important hub for regional or international connections, commerce, and communications. The term is Greek and means the "mother city" of a colony (in the ancient sense), that is, the city which sent out settlers. This was later generalized to a city regarded as a center of a specified activity, or any large, important city in a nation.
A big city belonging to a larger urban agglomeration, but which is not the core of that agglomeration, is not generally considered a metropolis but a part of it. The plural of the word is most commonly metropolises.
For urban centers outside metropolitan areas that generate a similar attraction at smaller scale for their region, the concept of the regiopolis, short regio, was introduced by German professors in 2006.
History
In the past, metropolis was the designation for a city or state of origin of a colony. Many large cities founded by ancient civilizations have been considered important world metropolises of their times due to their large populations and importance. Some of these ancient metropolises survived until the modern days and are among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.

Demon Music Group
Demon Records is a British record label, founded in 1980 by former United Artists A&R executive Andrew Lauder and Jake Riviera, who had previously started Stiff Records. The pair had also founded Radar Records in 1978 and F-Beat in 1979.
History
The label was originally planned to release one-off singles, with early releases from the Subterraneans (featuring NME journalist Nick Kent), the Spectres (formed by Glen Matlock), TV21, and Department S. Demon's first chart success came with Department S's "Is Vic There?", which reached #22 in the UK Singles Chart.
Further chart success followed with Bananarama'a "Aie-a-Mwana". The label then changed direction towards launching long-term artists. Lauder left to join Island Records in 1981, and Demon started a subsidiary label, Edsel Records, the same year, for reissues of 1960s and 1970s albums. By 1982, Lauder had returned, and Demon had spawned further sub-labels, including Hi Records (the Memphis soul label), and Drop Out (psychedelic rock).

An inside look at Metropolis Studios in West London from an entirely fresh perspective. Flight.

Previously a grand Victorian power station, Metropolis has become the studio home of many great recording artists, notably Freddie Mercury who recorded some of his greatest works on the Fazioli piano in Studio A (pictured 00:41).
At the turn of the twentieth century, the building hosted the power generators for West London's Tram network but fell into disuse after 1920. Following a masterful architectural conversion in 1989, the building assumed its current role as a major recording studio.
Metropolis features some of the finest studio space, recording technology, and production and mastering engineers in the world, and many of the biggest global music hits released every month pass through its doors. It is a monument to thriving creativity and excellence, all housed in a stunning architectural environment.

The world famous Metropolis studios, Music Gateway caught up with Miles Showell one of Metropolis's chief mastering engineer's and got his insight into his career and advice on mastering.
A team of world class, award winning mastering engineers supplying stereo & 5.1 surround mastering for CD, iTunes, vinyl, Blu-ray, DVD, DSD, and beyond.
5 mastering rooms featuring custom consoles, SADiE DAWs, Prism Convertors, including DSD, 2 x modified Neumann VSM 80s, PMC monitoring, utilising a broad selection of the highest quality digital and analogue equalisers, compressors, limiters and processing.
With 2 large recordings studios, 4 mixing rooms (stereo / 5.1), and a large selection of microphones to choose from, there is something for everyone at Metropolis. Occupying a Grade II listed former power station in Chiswick, West London, our studios evoke Fritz Lang's 1926 film vision of the future, after which they are named. The future is something Metropolis is all about.
They can record full band sessions, string sections (up to 16 piece), overdubs, Protools & Logic DAWs and have a wide range of analogue and digital tape machines available.
Mixing can be done on one of our four analogue mixing consoles. We can also mix to picture and offer Stereo and 5.1 mixing for PCM, SACD & DVD Audio, DVD & Blu-ray. Alongside these, we have four production & programming rooms which house a variety of world-renowned producers and mix engineers.
Metropolis is well renowned as a world class facility. They have recorded & mixed some of the most classic artists albums of all time at Metropolis including Queen, The Stone Roses, The Verve, The Libertines, Lauren Hill, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, and Rihanna. However, they don't only work with major labels, global icons and household names. They are able to cater for smaller artists with development deals & private projects. We can tailor packages to suit your needs.

Enormous caravan trains once traversed the Sahara Desert that extends for nine million square kilometres and is the largest desert in the world. Just a few kilometres beyond Sudan’s metropolis of Khartoum in Omdurman is the splendid burial place of the famous 19th century Islamic leader, Al Mahdi, one of the most important exponents of Sufism. It was also Al Mahdi who invaded Khartoum, a city founded by the Egyptians that was later ruled by the British. In the 19th century the infamous warriors of the Hadendoa people were also the courageous soldiers of Al-Mahdi´s army. Today they live in the environs of the Red Sea Mountains where the camel is the only means of transport. Those travelling across the Sahara have always had to cope with the savage climate of the desert and in ancient times, as well as today, the overwhelming heat saps the strength of both man and beast as the daytime temperature can reach a scorching fifty five degrees Celsius. At the foot of the mountain range that we must cross in order to travel deep into the homeland of the Hadendoa we meet a group of wood gatherers. In addition to the trading of camels and goats, the gathering and selling of wood is one of the main sources of income for this unique nomadic people. Without a sound several mounted Hadendoa warriors have approached us. The atmosphere is anything but relaxed and our uncertainty seems to please the warriors who, mounted on camels, are truly menacing. In the past the British army also experienced the wrath of these people. The looks on the faces of the Hadendoa further increases the tension. Finally, after what seems like several minutes, we tentatively step forward. In broken Arabic we try to explain to the warriors that we have journeyed far to meet them. Our initial scepticism is replaced by a long and amicable handshake with their leader that sets our fears to rest. Surrounded by the desert and the Red Sea Mountains and cut off from most of the influences of modern civilization, the legendary Hadendoa Tribe has somehow managed to maintain its unique cultural identity and freedom.

Some signs of affluence are beginning to appear and in future years, Vientiane may become yet another Asian metropolis with skyscrapers, smog and manic rush hours. South Korea (한국), officially the Republic of Korea (대한민국), is a sovereign state in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is a metropolitan railway system consisting of 20 rapid transit, light metro, commuter rail and people mover lines located in northwest South Korea. The system serves most of the Seoul Metropolitan Area including the Incheon metropolis and satellite cities in Gyeonggi province. Some regional lines in the network stretch out to rural areas in northern Chungnam province and western Gangwon province that lie over 100 km away from the capital.
The network consists of numbered lines 1–9, which serve Seoul City proper and its surroundings and named regional lines that serve the greater metropolitan region. Most of the system is operated by four companies – Seoul Metro, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (SMRT), Korail (Korea National Railroad) and Metro 9.
Its first metro line, Line 1, started construction in 1971 and opened in 1974, with through-operation to Korail suburban railways. Today, it is one of the largest and most efficient metro systems in the world, with 331.5 km (206.0 mi) of track on lines 1–9 alone; wireless and internet service on all trains; and platform screen doors at the majority of stations.
The first line of the Seoul Subway network started construction in 1971 with economic and technical assistance from Japan.[8] The first section of subway was built using the cheaper cut and cover construction method. Line 1 opened in 1974 with through services joining surrounding Korail suburban railway lines similar to the Tokyo subway. Today, many of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway's lines are operated by Korail, South Korea's national passenger and freight railway operator. South Korea (한국), officially the Republic of Korea (대한민국), is a sovereign state in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula.
The Seoul Metropolitan Subway is a metropolitan railway system consisting of 20 rapid transit, light metro, commuter rail and people mover lines located in northwest South Korea. The system serves most of the Seoul Metropolitan Area including the Incheon metropolis and satellite cities in Gyeonggi province. Some regional lines in the network stretch out to rural areas in northern Chungnam province and western Gangwon province that lie over 100 km away from the capital.
The network consists of numbered lines 1–9, which serve Seoul City proper and its surroundings and named regional lines that serve the greater metropolitan region. Most of the system is operated by four companies – Seoul Metro, Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit (SMRT), Korail (Korea National Railroad) and Metro 9.
Its first metro line, Line 1, started construction in 1971 and opened in 1974, with through-operation to Korail suburban railways. Today, it is one of the largest and most efficient metro systems in the world, with 331.5 km (206.0 mi) of track on lines 1–9 alone; wireless and internet service on all trains; and platform screen doors at the majority of stations.
The first line of the Seoul Subway network started construction in 1971 with economic and technical assistance from Japan.[8] The first section of subway was built using the cheaper cut and cover construction method. Line 1 opened in 1974 with through services joining surrounding Korail suburban railway lines similar to the Tokyo subway. Today, many of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway's lines are operated by Korail, South Korea's national passenger and freight railway operator. Since antiquity this special location has brought it both power and wealth. On the northernmost tip of the island is the fascinating metropolis of Chora Ródos whose harbour entrance was once adorned by the Seventh Wonder Of The World, the Colossus of Rhodes. For more than two hundred years the Grand Master Palace and the Knight’s Hospital were the island’s most important buildings and today the Order’s well-preserved hospital is open to the general public. It was in Rhodes that the sun was born and where gods, knights and tourists have always sought good fortune and have been captivated by the enchanting islands of the Dodekanissa.

The most colorful church in Russia is the Resurrection of Christ Cathedral which was built on the orders of Tsar Alexander III on land where, in 1881, his father, Alexander II, had been killed by a bomb planted by a revolutionary group.Russian Baroque and Russian Classicism were established in St. Petersburg, a city of monumental events, outstanding architecture and an Imperial metropolis on the grand scale.
