Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, former chief minister Sashikala Kakodkar, several other politicians and citizens paid homage to memory of Goa's first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar on the occasion of his 41st death anniversary on Tuesday.Parrikar laid a garland at the Samadhi of the leader at Miramar while Kakodkar, other members of Bandodkar's family and others too paid floral tributes.
Devotional songs were sung by students of schools.
Later in the day, Parrikar inaugurated a life-size statue of Bandodkar at the Legislative Assembly complex at Porvorim were cabinet ministers, legislators, former ministers and legislators besides top bureaucrats and other prominent citizens also paid homage to the state's first chief minister.
As always, students of Sunitabhai Bandodkar School of Bicholim did not miss their date with Bandodkar and prepared the leader's samadhi decorating it with flowers at Miramar.

The bitter rivalry between former chief minister Sashikala Kakodkar, the daughter of Dayanand Bandodkar, and the white-haired 'lion' from Mandrem Ramakant Khalap, came to the fore on Tuesday, a day when the duo themselves and all and sundry in Goa's political arena put up a facade of bonhomie to pay tributes to the first Chief Minister of Goa.
The latest bone of contention between Khalap and Kakodkar, who've been bitter political foes over decades in Goa, is control of the Bandodkar Pratishtan, a trust formed in the name of the departed patriarch of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.
Some years ago, the trust was formed under the leadership of Khalap, and Ms Kakodkar was seemingly left out of it. The late Dr Kashinath Jhalmi, former speaker Surendra Sirsat and former MLA Dharma Chodankar were the trustees along with Khalap.
Recently, the vacancy caused by the death of Dr Jhalmi, was filled by Porvorim MLA, Rohan Khanvte, ignoring the claims of Ms Kakodkar.
The power-play apart, several plans of the trust have remained in limbo. The move to acquire land at Porvorim, which incidentally was approved and even alloted by the Serula Communidade, lapsed for some reason or the other.
The only activity that the trust has to show is the erection of a statue in Mandrem, the constituency that Bandodkar first became an MLA and Chief Minister from in 1963.
Both Sashikala, and PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavlikar, the man who now controls the MGP, are keen to take control of the trust, but Khalap is reportedly averse to the idea. Dhavlikar in fact has proposed that he will bring to fruition all the plans of the trust but the others involved are averse to it as they feel the Dhavlikars have no stake in the legacy of Bandodkar.

Dayanand Bandodkar
Dayanand Balkrishna Bandodkar (12 March 1911 – 12 August 1973) was the first Chief Minister of Goa after the territory was returned to India by Portugal. A wealthy mine owner, he sought to merge the territory with the state of Maharashtra. He swept the polls in 1963, 1967 and in 1972 and remained in power until his death in 1973.
His proposal however to merge with Maharashtra was met by stiff opposition by the local population. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India then offered him two options:
The move was ratified in both houses of the Indian Parliament, the Lok Sabha (on 1 December 1966), and the Rajya Sabha (on 7 December 1966). It was signed into effect by the President of India, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan on 16 December 1966. An opinion poll was subsequently held on 16 January 1967 to decide the fate of the union territory which voted to retain its status as a union territory by 34,021 votes.

The bitter rivalry between former chief minister Sashikala Kakodkar, the daughter of Dayanand Bandodkar, and the white-haired 'lion' from Mandrem Ramakant Khalap, came to the fore on Tuesday, a day when the duo themselves and all and sundry in Goa's political arena put up a facade of bonhomie to pay tributes to the first Chief Minister of Goa.
The latest bone of contention between Khalap and Kakodkar, who've been bitter political foes over decades in Goa, is control of the Bandodkar Pratishtan, a trust formed in the name of the departed patriarch of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party.
Some years ago, the trust was formed under the leadership of Khalap, and Ms Kakodkar was seemingly left out of it. The late Dr Kashinath Jhalmi, former speaker Surendra Sirsat and former MLA Dharma Chodankar were the trustees along with Khalap.
Recently, the vacancy caused by the death of Dr Jhalmi, was filled by Porvorim MLA, Rohan Khanvte, ignoring the claims of Ms Kakodkar.
The power-play apart, several plans of the trust have remained in limbo. The move to acquire land at Porvorim, which incidentally was approved and even alloted by the Serula Communidade, lapsed for some reason or the other.
The only activity that the trust has to show is the erection of a statue in Mandrem, the constituency that Bandodkar first became an MLA and Chief Minister from in 1963.
Both Sashikala, and PWD Minister, Sudin Dhavlikar, the man who now controls the MGP, are keen to take control of the trust, but Khalap is reportedly averse to the idea. Dhavlikar in fact has proposed that he will bring to fruition all the plans of the trust but the others involved are averse to it as they feel the Dhavlikars have no stake in the legacy of Bandodkar.
