The weather resistant double coat consists of a long, flat, thick, outer coat of coarse hair, straight or slightly undulating, and lying over a dense, fine, woolly undercoat. The coat is more profuse about the neck and shoulders where it forms a ruff or mane, which is more pronounced in males so that it may fend off wolf attacks. The longer hair on the tail forms a plume. There is also feathering along the back of the front legs and along the back of the thighs, giving a "pantaloon" effect. The hair on the face and ears is both shorter and of finer texture.
This dog has a medium sized, wedge shaped head with a slightly rounded crown. The eyes are dark brown and almond shaped. The body is slightly longer than it is tall. [9]
The main coat color is white and can have varying shades of gray, badger {mixture of gray, tan and black hairs (black should not go to the root of the hair)}, red (rust), or tan around the face (including a full face mask), ears and sometimes on the body and tail. As Great Pyrenees mature, their coats grow thicker and the longer colored hair of the coat often fades. Sometimes a little light tan or lemon will appear later in life around the ears and face. Being a double-coated breed, the undercoat can also have color and the skin as well. The color of the nose and on the eye rims should be jet black.[10] Grey or tan markings that remain lend the French name, "blaireau", (badger) which is a similar grizzled mixture color seen in the European badger. More recently, any color is correctly termed "Blaireau".[11]
One singular characteristic of the Great Pyrenees is the unique double dew claws on each hind leg.

Andorra Travel Video Guide People may tell you Andorra's nothing but skiing and shopping. They might add that Andorra la Vella, its capital and only town, is a fuming traffic jam bordered by palaces of consumerism. (Fact: Andorra has over 2000 shops -- more than one for every 40 inhabitants). They're right to a point, but also way off course. Shake yourself from Andorra la Vella's tawdry embrace, take one of only three secondary roads in the state and discover some of the most dramatic scenery in all of the Pyrenees.
Andorra Travel Video Guide wedged between France and Spain offers by far the best skiing in the Pyrenees, like in Canillo & Soldeu or Arinsal & Pal. In the last five years, its resorts have invested over €50 million in mountain cafés and restaurants, chairlifts and gondolas, car parks and snow-making machines. And once the snows have melted, summer activities are to be had in Ordino & around. There's great walking in abundance, ranging from easy strolls to demanding day hikes in the higher, more remote reaches of the principality.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8kOSQnSC-M
A warning though: this may not be the case a few years from now. Greed and uncontrolled development risk spoiling those side valleys. Already the pounding of jackhammers drowns out the winter thrum of ski lifts and threatens the silence of summer.

The Pyrenees in Catalonia encompass some awesomely beautiful mountains and valleys. Above all, the Parc Nacional d’Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici, in the northwest, is a jewel-like area of lakes and dramatic peaks. The area’s highest mountain, the Pica d’Estats (3143m), is reached by a spectacular hike (suitable only for experienced hikers) past glittering glacial lakes. On arrival at the top, you enjoy a privileged point with 360-degree views over France and Spain.
As well as the natural beauty of the mountains, and the obvious attractions of walking, skiing and other sports, the Catalan Pyrenees and their foothills have a rich cultural heritage, notably the countless lovely Romanesque churches and monasteries, often tucked away in remote valleys. They are mainly the product of a time of prosperity and optimism in this region in the 11th and 12th centuries, after Catalonia had broken ties with France in 988 and as the Muslim threat from the south receded. You may find that some villagers are wary of outsiders as the hand of Franco’s retribution reached deep into these rural parts after the Civil War.
When looking for a place to kip, keep an eye out for cases rurales or cases de pagés (country houses converted into accommodation), usually set in old village houses and peppered across the Pyrenees. The annual Guia d’Establiments de Turisme Rural guide, published by the Generalitat (regional Catalan government), covers most of them.

Thanks to a great climate suitable for activities all year round and fantastic natural settings ranging from the high mountains down to the sea. One third of the area of Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees is a natural protected area. The region includes seven spectacularly contrasting natural parks, with just a few kilometres separating the snow-capped Pyrenean peaks from the Mediterranean’s most charming beaches and coves. Explore fishing villages and high mountain rural towns, for Romanesque monasteries and churches, for Iberian settlements, Greek and Roman ruins, Jewish quarters and medieval fortifications, and for the surrealist legacy of Salvador Dalí.

Roussillon is one of the historical counties of the former Principality of Catalonia, corresponding roughly to the present-day southern French département of Pyrénées-Orientales (Eastern Pyrenees). It may also refer to Northern Catalonia or French Catalonia, the first used by Catalan-speakers and the second used by French-speakers. A 1998 survey found that 34% of respondents stated they speak Catalan, and a further 21% understand it.
History
============
Also a French province before the Revolution (and Spanish before the Thirty Years' War), Roussillon derived its name from Ruscino (Rosceliona, Castel Rossello), a small fortified place near modern-day Perpignan where Gaulish chieftains met to consider Hannibal's request for a conference. The region formed part of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis from 121 BC to AD 462, when it was ceded with the rest of Septimania to the Visigoth Theodoric II. His successor, Amalaric, on his defeat by Clovis in 531 retired to Hispania, leaving a governor in Septimania.
In 719, the Saracens crossed the Pyrenees and maintained political hegemony of Septimania until their final defeat by Pepin the Short in 759, who went on to occupy Roussillon after conquering Narbonne. Roussillon was occupied by Carlolengians in 760. On the invasion of Hispania in 778, Charlemagne found the Marca Hispanica wasted by war and the inhabitants settled in the mountains. He granted some lands in the plains to Visigothic refugees from Moorish Hispania and founded several monasteries. In 792, the Saracens again invaded France, but they were repulsed by William, Count of Toulouse - regent of the child Louis the Pious, King of Aquitaine - whose hegemony extended into Catalonia.
The different portions of his kingdom in time grew into allodial fiefs, and in 893, Sunyer II became the first hereditary Count of Roussillon. But his rule only extended over the eastern part of what became the later province. The western part, the Cerdanya (French, Cerdagne), was ruled in 900 by Miró as first count, and one of his grandsons, Bernat, became the first hereditary count of the middle portion, or Besalú. The Counts of Roussillon were allied to their cousins the Counts of Empúries in a centuries-long conflict with the surrounding great nobles. Count Girard I participated in the First Crusade in the following of Raymond IV of Toulouse, and was one of the first to set foot in Jerusalem when it was stormed by the Crusaders in 1099. At the beginning of the 12th century, the prestige of the Counts of Barcelona began to rise to such a height that the Counts of Roussillon had no choice but to swear fealty to them.
In 1111, Ramon Berenguer III, Count of Barcelona, inherited the fief of Besalú, to which was added in 1117 Cerdanya. The possession of Roussillon by its last count, Girard II, was challenged by his illegitimate brothers. To ensure that his brothers would not inherit his territories, in his will Girard II left all his lands to Alfonso II of Aragon, who took possession in 1172. Under the Aragonese monarchs, economic and demographic growth of the region continued, and Collioure (Catalan: Cotlliure), the port of Perpignan, became an important locus of Mediterranean trade.[citation needed]
As the French and Spanish crowns grew in power, the region of Roussillon, forming part of the border between them, was frequently a site of military conflict. By the Treaty of Corbeil (1258), Louis IX of France formally surrendered sovereignty over Roussillon and his claim to the title of Count of Barcelona to the Crown of Aragon, recognizing a centuries-old reality.[citation needed]
James I of Aragon had wrested the Balearic Isles from the Moors and joined these islands with Roussillon to create the Kingdom of Majorca, with its capital at Perpignan. In 1276, James I granted this kingdom to his son, who became James II. The subsequent disputes of this monarch with his brother Peter III were exploited by Philip III of France in his quarrel with Peter III for the crown of the Two Sicilies. Philip III espoused James II's cause and led an army into Aragon but, retreating, died at Perpignan in 1285. Lacking the resources to continue the struggle, James then became reconciled to his brother Peter, and in 1311 the former was succeeded by his son Sanç I, or Sancho I, who founded the cathedral of Perpignan shortly before his death in 1324. His successor, James III of Majorca, refused to do homage to Philip VI of France for the seigneury of Montpellier, and applied to Peter IV of Aragon for aid. Peter not only refused, but declared war and seized Majorca and Roussillon in 1344.

During our bike ride - somewhere in between Bilbao and Barcelona - we decided to include some famous Tour de France cols: Marie Blanque, Aubisque, Tourmalet, Aspin and Peyresourde. With our camera - luckily waterproof - ingeniously taped to Sanders helmet, we were able to film this impression. Was biking these cols the clever thing to do? Well, for 90 % of the time at least. Which possibly explains why we met no - zero - other camp-site-packed travel bikes on the cols. When we were here it was a 100 percent lightweight carbon framed racing bikes environment.
Nevertheless a great - healthy, tiring, testing, interesting, challenging - but most of all fun first time experience. On this specific stretch the total climb was 6.981 metres. For these investments we got 6.531 metres of downhill in return. Total distance to cover all five cols - plus a decent rest in mountainous getaway Gavarnie - is 292 kilometres.

The Pyrenees is a range of mountains in southwest Europe that forms a natural border between France and Spain. It separates the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of continental Europe, and extends for about 491 km (305 mi) from the Bay of Biscay (Cap Higuer) to the Mediterranean Sea (Cap de Creus).
For the most part, the main crest forms a massive divider between France and Spain, with the small country of Andorra sandwiched in between. The Crown of Aragon and the Kingdom of Navarre have historically extended on both sides of the mountain range, with smaller northern portions now in France and larger southern parts now in Spain.

Cycling from the Pyrenees to the Costa Brava in Catalonia is a great way to explore this diverse region. The Ruta Del Pirineu a la Costa Brava takes you through four very different regions of Catalonia giving you a great overall experience of the area.
Starting at the small town of San Joan de Les Abadesses we spent three days cycling through the foothills of the Pyrenees all the way to Llançà on the Costa Brava taking in small villages, beautiful landscapes and fantastic, local food (and wine) along the way.
▲ THE ROUTE ▲
✦ DAY 1: San Joan De Les Abadesses to Vall D'en Bas
Leaving the small historic village of San Joan De Les Abadesses, we began our trip to Vall D'en Bas taking in the lovely town of Ripoll along the way before the big descent into Olot.
✦ DAY 2: Vall D'en Bas to Banyoles
Continue on your cycling tour from the Pyrenees to Costa Brava, the road leads you from Olot to the magical beach forest, La Fageda de la Jordá. The fun starts again after a short climb with the fast hills taking you to the tranquil Lake Banyoles.
✦ DAY 3: Banyoles to Llançà
Leaving Banyoles early, the route takes you to the incredible viewpoint of Sant Pere De Rodes. A short hike above this amazing, ancient monastery an incredible 360 degree panoramic view of the area, with the Pyrenees to the north and the beautiful beaches of the Costa Brava stretching out as far as the eye can see. The steepest section of road on the whole trip takes you back to sea level and then it's onto the small fishing town of Llançà where your cycle trip comes to an end.
