Nationwide Organization of Revolutionary Anarchists in the United States?

Over 150 years of the anarchist theoretical and organizing tradition have passed, yet anarchist influence in the United States is practically non-existent. In some local contexts, we do see occasional anarchist influence, but in a nationwide context anarchists are practically irrelevant.

There has been a conversation brewing for a few years among some anarchists. This conversation has moved forward specifically in a grouping of organizations that have come together in recent years around the Class Struggle Anarchist Conferences. Since the first Class Struggle Anarchist Conference in New York City in 2008, it’s been increasingly clear that these different organizations have a great deal of agreement and could be strengthened by unification into a nationwide anarchist organization.

In anticipation for an upcoming conference of these organizations that intends to found this single, nationwide organization, this article is an effort to bring together the many arguments for why such an organization is desirable. More than that, I hope to show the inspirational possibilities of such an organization in the broader anarchist movement, so that this organization can take off after its founding.

Towards More Effective Political Organizations

The debate over whether or not anarchists should organize is a long and rich one. Much has been written on the subject. So it is likely that most anarchists, at least those who have been politically involved for a significant length of time, know where they stand on this topic. At any rate, the value of organization will not be argued here. Rather, this text is addressed to those who are already convinced of the value of anarchist organization, but who may have doubts about what form such organization should take or, more specifically, about what should be the role of those whose personalities incline them to be at the front of most efforts, and who have ideas that they believe to be in advance of the rest of the membership. In other words, what are we to do about "leadership" in our organizations?

Anarchism And The Platformist Tradition

Platformism is a current within libertarian communism putting forward specific suggestions on the nature which anarchist organzation should take.

The Question Of The Revolutionary Anarchist Organization: A Common Struggle Position Paper (adopted September 15, 2002)

Common Struggle - Libertarian Communist Federation is still a small anarchist federation and, in our mind, there is still a lot of work to do in order to see the emergence of the type of revolutionary organization we advocate in our region. Our federation is composed of activists coming from different movements of resistance who identify with the communist tradition within anarchism. Our activities are organized around theoretical development, anarchist propaganda, and intervention in the struggle of our class, be it autonomously or by direct involvement in social movements.
