DECEMBER 2, 2014 - Disguised as a special holiday kick-off event, The U.S. Air Force Band surprised the visitors of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center on Tuesday, Dec. 2, with another innovative flash mob. Unsuspecting museum visitors were quickly surrounded by instrumentalists and vocalists as they filled the Boeing Aviation Hangar with holiday music. Fittingly, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, one of the museum's most popular attractions, served as the backdrop for this performance. Led by The U.S. Air Force Band's commander and conductor, Col. Larry H. Lang, this year's performance brought together more than 100 Airmen musicians from the Band's six performing ensembles offering renditions of "Greensleeves" and "Carol of the Bells." The flash mob was a follow up to the group's surprise performance last year at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. After the success of that viral video, The U.S. Air Force Band decided to expand on that concept and once again partner with the Smithsonian.

Bringing an Object to Life is the topic for the Smithsonian's What's New in Aerospace? Series and presented in collaboration with NASA. In this segment, researchers preparing objects for an exhibit require more than just selecting something from a list. Conservators must examine the object, treat problems they see, and ensure the object has proper support for the duration of its display. At the National Air and Space Museum, a team including the exhibition curator, a conservator, a designer, and an object mount maker collaborated on bringing one special object to the Museum floor for the first time. After his Apollo 17 moonwalk, Gene Cernan returned his Oxygen Purge System cover to Earth, and NASA sealed it in a package just weeks after the mission’s completion. For decades, it sat untouched and virtually unknown in Museum storage until it was rediscovered in 2013 and became a candidate for the new Outside the Spacecraft: Fifty Years of Extra-Vehicular Activity exhibition.
This What’s New in Aerospace? program tells the story of the inclusion of the object in the exhibition and how Museum conservator Lisa Young prepares an object for display using microscopic examination of the materials. The exhibition’s curator, Jennifer Levasseur, and a representative from the United Technologies Corporation also spoke about the design and construction of life support systems for work outside the spacecraft.

The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) of the Smithsonian Institution holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world in 161,145 square feet (14,970.9 m2) of exhibition floor space. It was established in 1946, as the National Air Museum and opened its main building in 1976. Located in Washington, D.C., United States, it is a center for research into the history and science of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics. Almost all space and aircraft on display are originals or backups to the originals. It operates an annex, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, at Dulles International Airport, which opened in 2003 and itself encompasses 760,000 square feet (71,000 m2). The museum currently conducts restoration of its collection at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland while steadily moving such restoration and archival activities into its Udvar-Hazy annex facilities as of 2014.The Air & Space Museum announced a two-year renovation of its main entrance hall, "Milestones of Flight" in April 2014. The renovation to the main hall (which had not received a major update since the museum opened in 1976) was funded by a $30 million donation from Boeing. The gift, which will be paid over seven years, is the largest corporate donation ever received by the Air & Space Museum. Boeing had previously given donations totaling $58 million. The hall will be renamed the "Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall". The renovation (whose total cost was not revealed) began in April 2014, and will involve the temporary removal of some exhibits before the hall is refurbished. Because some exhibits represent century-old achievements which no longer resonate with the public, some items will be moved to other locations in the museum while new exhibits are installed. The first new exhibit, a 1930s wind tunnel, will be installed in November 2014. When finished, the hall will present a "more orderly" appearance, and allow room for the placement of future new exhibits (which will include moving the filming model of the USS Enterprise from the original 1960s Star Trek television series into the hall). The renovation will also include the installation of a "media wall" and touch-screen information kiosks to allow visitors to learn about items on display. An additional gift from Boeing is funding the renovation of the "How Things Fly" children's exhibit, new museum educational programming, and the creation of an accredited course on flight and space technology for elementary and secondary school teachers.

International Spy Museum
All is not what it seems at one of Washington's most fun museums. Through multimedia presentations, hands-on exhibits and audiovisual effects, the focus is on educating the public about espionage's impact on current and historic events. Examine spy paraphernalia such as decoder machines, miniature cameras and a lipstick pistol, and test your powers of observations, analysis and surveillance at interactive stations. 'Operation Spy' allows visitors to assume a cover, and among other things, conduct video surveillance, carry out a polygraph test on a suspect agent and escape from a high-security compound.
Opening Times: Times vary each month but generally daily 0900-1900 (Mar-Aug) and daily 1000-1800 (Sep-Feb). Check the website for exact times.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: Yes
Unesco: No
Address: 800 F Street, NW, Washington DC, United States
National Air and Space Museum
The most popular of all the Smithsonian Museums, the National Air and Space Museum traces the development of air and space travel. It is home to the original Wright Brothers' 1903 Flyer, Charles Lindbergh's Spirit of St Louis, the Bell X-1 (the plane that broke the sound barrier in 1947), the Apollo 11 lunar command module and a vast collection of aviation and space technology memorabilia. Free 90-minute tours trace the history of air and space at 1030 and 1300. The museum also houses an IMAX film theatre and the Albert Einstein Planetarium. A second vast NASA museum next to Dulles airport houses historically significant craft including Space Shuttle Enterprise and the Enola Gay (www.nasm.si.edu/udvarhazy).
Opening Times: Daily 1000-1730 (Sep-Mar); daily 1000-1930 (Apr-Aug).
Admission Fees: No (charge for the planetarium and IMAX)

National Museum of Natural History
The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History has a superb collection of dinosaur fossils, an insect zoo, the world's largest preserved bush elephant, the 45.5-carat Hope Diamond and an IMAX film theatre. The Mammal Hall is devoted to mammal and human diversity, evolution and adaptation. The Sant Ocean Hall uses state-of-the-art technology to demonstrate the oceans' essential role and includes a coral reef teeming with marine life. The newest exhibition, the David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins, tells the epic story of the evolution of man.
Opening Times: Daily 1000-1730.

National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)
NMAI is a tribute to Native Americans. The impressive structure is circular and faces east in accordance to American Indian traditions. Decorated in earthy tones, it is designed to reflect indigenous aesthetics. The museum is divided into four sections: 'Our Universe' focuses on Native philosophies related to creation and the relationship between man and the universe; 'Our Peoples' relates the life of Native Americans via videos; 'Our Lives' focuses on the contemporary life and identities of eight Native Communities; and there is also a changing contemporary exhibit. In the Lelawi Theater, the audience is put in the middle of a unique multi-media presentation about tribal life.

Take in the many splendors of the nation’s capital when you arrive at Washington, D.C.
Your Washington, D.C. tour should start at the National Mall, where you’ll find monuments, memorials, and government buildings instead of tons of shopping. If you’d like to get around town easily but don’t want to rent a car, the Capital Bikeshare program will let you cruise around the city without wasting gas or getting stuck in traffic.
Check out the Watergate Hotel and Kennedy Center when you stop at Foggy Bottom, then move on to Georgetown, the oldest district in D.C. It’s filled with 18th-century buildings and, of course, the university itself. After a stop at the National Cathedral, make your way to the Smithsonian National Zoo, the perfect stop for the young and the young at heart.
If you’re feeling the need to channel your inner 007, go to the International Spy Museum, and learn about the covert operations and intelligence agencies that have shaped the world we live in. Of course, you can’t enjoy any Washington, D.C., tourism without admiring the White House, so make sure that’s on your list too.

The National Air and Space Museum Story of Flight (1997)

The National Air and Space Museum (NASM) of the Smithsonian Institution holds the largest collection of historic aircraft and spacecraft in the world in 161,145 square feet (14,970.9 m2) of exhibition floor space.[5] It was established in 1946, as the National Air Museum and opened its main building in 1976. Located in Washington, D.C., United States, it is a center for research into the history and science of aviation and spaceflight, as well as planetary science and terrestrial geology and geophysics.[5] Almost all space and aircraft on display are originals or backups to the originals. It operates an annex, the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, at Dulles International Airport, which opened in 2003 and itself encompasses 760,000 square feet (71,000 m2). The museum currently conducts restoration of its collection at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland while steadily moving such restoration and archival activities into its Udvar-Hazy annex facilities as of 2014.
The museum was originally called the National Air Museum when formed on August 12, 1946 by an act of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman.[8][9] Some pieces in the National Air and Space Museum collection date back to the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia after which the Chinese Imperial Commission donated a group of kites to the Smithsonian after Smithsonian Secretary Spencer Fullerton Baird convinced exhibiters that shipping them home would be too costly. The Stringfellow steam engine intended for aircraft was added to the collection in 1889, the first piece actively acquired by the Smithsonian now in the current NASM collection.[10]
After the establishment of the museum, there was no one building that could hold all the items to be displayed, many obtained from the United States Army and United States Navy collections of domestic and captured aircraft from World War I. Some pieces were on display in the Arts and Industries Building, some were stored in the Aircraft Building (also known as the "Tin Shed"), a large temporary metal shed in the Smithsonian Castle's south yard. Larger missiles and rockets were displayed outdoors in what was known as Rocket Row. The shed housed at large Martin bomber, a LePere fighter-bomber, and an Aeromarine 39B floatplane. Still, much of the collection remained in storage due to a lack of display space.[10] The combination of the large numbers of aircraft donated to the Smithsonian after World War II and the need for hangar and factory space for the Korean War drove the Smithsonian to look for its own facility to store and restore aircraft. The current Garber Facility was ceded to the Smithsonian by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission in 1952 after the curator Paul E. Garber spotted the wooded area from the air. Bulldozers from Fort Belvoir and prefabricated buildings from the United States Navy kept the initial costs low.
The space race in the 1950s and 1960s led to the renaming of the museum to the National Air and Space Museum, and finally congressional passage of appropriations for the construction of the new exhibition hall which opened July 1, 1976 at the height of the United States Bicentennial festivities under the leadership of Director Michael Collins, who had flown to the Moon on Apollo 11. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center opened in 2003, funded by a private donation.
The museum received COSTAR, the corrective optics instrument installed in the Hubble Space Telescope during its first servicing mission (STS-61), when it was removed and returned to Earth after Space Shuttle mission STS-125. The museum also holds the backup mirror for the Hubble which, unlike the one that was launched, was ground to the correct shape. There were once plans for it to be installed to the Hubble itself, but plans to return the satellite to Earth were scrapped after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003; the mission was re-considered as too risky.
The Smithsonian has also been promised the International Cometary Explorer, which is currently in a solar orbit that occasionally brings it back to Earth, should NASA attempt to recover it.
