"A budget airline, well I have not yet found out if it (the cancellation) has something to do with the small-size company failing to get approval or other reasons
. If the authority has no confidence with a small sized company and are therefore not granting an approval, then I will lose confidence in the airline too."

"
We are not the only airline to encounter such problems. But at this period of time we have to reserve the rights to say nothing as we don't want to shift the responsibility to anyone. But we are clear that we had the approval and suddenly were told in the afternoon that there wasn't an approval. Therefore we had to make the best decision in these circumstances."

STORYLINE:
In an embarrassing mishap, the inaugural flight of a much-publicised local budget airline was abandoned on Wednesday because it wasn't cleared to fly over
Russian airspace.
Officials at
Oasis Hong Kong Airlines, however, insisted the delay of flight O8700 from
Hong Kong to
London's Gatwick Airport wasn't their fault.
The flight was scheduled to depart Hong Kong at 0500
GMT but after a five-hour delay was finally cancelled.
Oasis chairman Raymond Lee, who was on board, said the delay was due to a last-minute hold-up in approval to fly over Russian airspace.
"We had the approval and suddenly were told in the afternoon that there wasn't an approval," he said adding, "therefore we had to make the best decision in these circumstance."
Lee said the airline is seeking an explanation from senior Russian officials.
In a statement, the airline said its paperwork was in order and its flight path over
Russia had been approved.
"We are clear that we had the approval and suddenly were told in the afternoon that there wasn't an approval," Raymond Lee, Chairman of Oasis
Airline said.
Russian aviation officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment, and phone calls to the
Federal Air Navigation Service in
Moscow rang unanswered on Wednesday.
A spokesman for the
Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department said it had not as yet received a flight plan from Oasis for a Thursday departure.
