44 Days: 75 Squadron's Defence of Port Moresby 1942 (Part 1)
Geoffrey Robertson presents a unique story of real Australian heroes. It's a story full of emotion and humour as the survivors of the 75 Squadron recall their times as Australia's front line defence. In the early weeks of 1942, Japan had seized most of the Pacific and were poised to launch their offensive against Australia. It was obvious that Australia had little, if any, form of defence. With the Japanese in New Guinea, it was imperative they be held there or Australia would be lost - this ominous task went to the men of 75 Squadron. Australia's airmen at the time were fighting in the skies over Britain and Africa, having been seconded in the 'Save Britain First' policy. Prime Minister Curtin wanted them back to save Australia. What he got was an order of Kittyhawks, originally destined for England, and a handful of pilots. Most of 75 Squadron were trained in ten days in Townsville before setting off for Port Moresby. Of the 24 planes sent to defend Australia, only one returned after 44 days of intensive fighting. Not only were young pilots having to fly against a superior and more experienced enemy each day, but sanitary conditions also threatened their performance. Even so, only 23 Kittyhawks were lost to an unbelievable 86 enemy planes. In this special, Robertson interviews Saburo Sakai, Japan's only living war ace who fought the 75 Squadron in those early days, who credits the Aussies with having incredible courage and skill. This is also a tribute to the late John Jackson, 75 Squadron's first leader who, at one time, was shot down and had to crawl through the crocodile infested terrain while being chased by a Japanese patrol. Jackson died later in action.- published: 26 Aug 2013

World War 2 Heroes - Saburo Sakai (Ft. War Thunder Gameplay)
READ DESCRIPTION :) Subscribe like Comment Favorite Share Hey guys, its cow here, and today I will be doing a special video. Now I guess most of you don't know who Saburo Sakai is. He is the ace of the month on war thunder, but he is a real person as well. Saburo Sakai is a japanese fighter pilot, who flew the A5M2 Reisen, Zero, which you are seeing right now. Now this, on itself, wasn't that special, but what is special, is the things Saburo Sakai actually did. One of the things he is known for, is his outstanding flying skills, he was an ace pilot in the japanese airforce, which is special already, because just a very select ammount of people actually were aces, but he also has got some historical takedowns on his name. On the 8th of december 1941, Saburo Sakai was one of the 45 Zero fighters who attacked Clarke Air Base, an airbase in the Philippines. They flew out to neutralize or destroy the base, facing american fighter pilots. Saburo Sakai was the first pilot, worldwide, taking down a P-40 kittyhawk, which was one of America's newest and most advanced fighters. This takedown, on itself, got repeated my multiple pilots in the future, but this is actually quite an special acheivement because the kittyhawks were better equiqed with weapons, and they were faster. The only thing the Zero's would beat the Kittyhawks on, were manouvrability. On the third day of combat, during the same mission, america send out several B-17 Flying Fortresses which were bombers, to counter-attack the japanese. Untill that day, there were no B-17's being shot down in combat, but that chanced when Saburo Sakai lined his airplane up with the Flying Fortress and fired away. Now this might sound easier then it actually is: the B-17 is known for its immense capability of absorbing damage. It would actually take a lot of firepower, or time, to take one down. Yet Saburo Sakai managed to do this, which was an huge acheivement. But Sakai did not only take lives away: he saved lifes as well. In 1942, sakai flew out on a patrol over Java, an Indonesian island. He got ordered to take down any enemie aircraft: both armed and unarmed. During this patrol, just after Sakai shot down an enemie aircraft, he encountered a Douglas DC-3, which was an Dutch airplane. This airplane was unarmed, and transported civilians. Sakai did not know about the last, he assumed the airplane was transporting important people. Those people could actually hold valuable information for the Japanese, so Sakai signalled the pilot to follow him, but the pilot did not obey. Flying closer to the Douglas DC-3, Sakai spotted a woman, with her child through a window. At this point he realized that the airplane was actually transporting civilians, trying to flee away from the war, so he decided not to shoot down the airplane. He signaled the airplane that it could move on, and he left them alone. Doing this could cost your head in the Japanese airforce, but they did not find out about this untill after the war. This really shows that not all Japanese were dicks back in the day. Japanese used to be hated, because of their attack on Pearl Harbor, and their extremely violent behaviour against prisonners. But people tend to forget that there were also people such as Sakai, actually being honorable men, fighting for their country. Enjoy the video :)- published: 27 Aug 2013
