As if you didn’t know - July 1st marks the 20th anniversary of the HKSAR. Streets and tunnel entrances have been decked out in a sea of red flags and Communist-style welcoming banners for President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit. It is Mr Xi’s first visit to Hong Kong since becoming China’s leader in 2012. Some areas of Admiralty and Wan Chai are in a state of lock down with roads closed and massive barricades erected to shield the big-wigs plus, of course, stringent security checks. With me in the studio are Ronny Tong, a new member of the Executive Council and we also have a former member of the Hong Kong Basic Law Drafting Committee, Martin Lee.
During his tenure as Hong Kong’s last governor, Chris Patten was called all sorts of names by Chinese top officials and state media. He was labeled a whore, a serpent, a tango dancer and “a sinner for a thousand years”. But to most people in Hong Kong, he was affectionately known as “Fat Pang” and remembered for his liking of egg tarts and engagement with the public. 20 years after boarding the royal yacht Britannia to leave Hong Kong, he says the city is still close to his heart. Producer Nina Loh talked to Chris Patten in London. where he recalled his five years as Governor as being his “happiest years”.

Hong Kong Oratorio Society and Voices of the Valley of San Fransisco Bay Area co-organize two concerts entitled ‘A Musical Journey’ at Herbst Theatre, San Francisco 8-9:30pm on 23 June Friday and The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles 8-9:30pm on 25 June Sunday for Cultural Exchange between China-HK and USA as well as to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
Designed by the American Architect Frank Gehry and home of the LA Philharmonic, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles will overwhelm you with its magnificent Organ (6,125 pipes) sounds blending both Western and Chinese instruments with a strong choral tone.
The two concerts will perform music written by various American Composers in the first half conducted by Ms Stephanie Chan of VOV 陳鳴鶯老師 whom was the former Music Director of the St Paul Co-educational College in HK. A Chinese music ensemble (i.e. Dizi & Xiao竹笛、簫, Pipa 琵琶, Sung 笙 and Gaohu & Erhu 高胡、二胡) lead by Dr Ricky Yeung from HK will present the traditional Chinese Folk Music. The highlight is a joint force of over 100-member joint-choir accompanied by the Pipe Organ 管風琴, the Western Orchestra augmented by the Chinese instruments. This unique combination is unprecedented.
World Peace is one of the main themes of the concerts as described in the singing text of the USA Premiere ‘Symphony No.8: This Boundless Land’ 第八交響曲 : 蒼茫大地 composed and conducted by the HK composer Prof. Chan Wing Wah 陳永華教授 with lyrics written by San Francisco-based writer Dr Sonia Ng 吳瑞卿博士. This Boundless Land, Chan’s Eighth Symphony commissioned by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra won the Golden Sail Award for music and lyrics of the CASH in 2008.
香港聖樂團 與 美國三藩市灣區清韻合唱團 聯合舉行两場名為 “慶祝香港回歸20周年暨港美音樂文化之旅" 音樂會 先在6月23日 晚上 8 至 9:30 假 美國三藩市赫伯斯特劇院 舉行 ; 並在6月25日 晚上 8 - 9:30 假 洛杉機的華特.迪士尼音樂廳 舉行。這是一個中國 香港 美國 的文化交流活動，同時亦是為慶祝中國成立香港特別行政區20週年纪念。

The new Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Saturday vowed to "resolutely do everything" within her ability to implement the "one country, two systems" principle.
Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the new chief executive, delivered a speech at the swearing-in ceremony in Hong Kong, as the special administrative region marks the 20th anniversary of its return to China.
With a humble heart that she accepts this greatest honor of her life and prepare to take on the greatest challenge in her public service career, she said in her inauguration speech.
"To accurately and comprehensively fulfill my duties as chief executive, I will resolutely do everything within my ability to implement the 'one country, two systems’ principle, uphold the Basic Law of the HKSAR, defend the rule of law, and promote a deep and positive relationship between the central government and the HKSAR.
"In the new circumstances and conflicts of the society over the past few years, these seemingly straightforward and necessary tasks will test my political wisdom, ability to mediation and patience. I will, as I always have, rise to these challenges and firmly take actions in accordance with the law against any acts that will undermine the country’s sovereignty, security and development interests, ensure the implementation of 'one country and two systems' principle in Hong Kong in a comprehensive manner," she vowed.
"I will live up to the great trust of the central government and the people of Hong Kong," Lam said.
In the conclusion of her speech, she said: "I look forward to going along with you all to build a better Hong Kong."
Before the speech, Lam was sworn in before President Xi Jinping, who oversaw the swearing-in ceremony. Then, the principal officials of the fifth-term HKSAR government also took their oaths before Xi.
Members of the Executive Council of the HKSAR were sworn in by Lam.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with outgoing chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Leung Chun-ying, on Thursday.
Xi said the central government has fully acknowledged his work during his five-year tenure of office.
Xi also met with senior representatives of the region's executive, legislative and judicial bodies later on Thursday.
Xi arrived in Hong Kong earlier the same day for a three-day inspection tour. The president is scheduled to attend celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the HKSAR's fifth-term government, to be led by incoming chief executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngo.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. With around 7.2 million inhabitants of various nationalities, Hong Kong is one of the world's most densely populated metropolises.
After the First Opium War (1839–42), Hong Kong became a British colony with the perpetual cession of Hong Kong Island, followed by Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 and a 99-year lease of the New Territories from 1898. Hong Kong remained under British control for about a century until the Second World War, when Japan occupied the colony from December 1941 to August 1945. After the Surrender of Japan, the British resumed control. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Disputes over the perceived misapplication of this principle have contributed to popular protests, including the 2014 Umbrella Revolution.

Xi Jinping
Xi Jinping (pronounced [ɕǐ tɕînpʰǐŋ], Chinese: 习近平; born 15 June 1953) is the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, the President of the People's Republic of China, and the Chairman of the Central Military Commission. As Xi holds the top offices of the party and the military, in addition to being the head of state through the office of president, he is sometimes informally referred to as China's "paramount leader". As general secretary, Xi is also an ex-officio member of the Politburo Standing Committee, China's top decision-making body.
Son of communist veteran Xi Zhongxun, Xi Jinping rose through the ranks politically in China's coastal provinces. He served as the governor of Fujian between 1999 and 2002, then as governor and party secretary of the neighboring Zhejiang between 2002 and 2007. Following the dismissal of Chen Liangyu, Xi transferred to Shanghai as the party secretary for a brief period in 2007. Xi joined the Politburo standing committee and central secretariat in October 2007, and was Hu Jintao's successor. He served as vice-president, between 2008 and 2013.

A chief executive officer (CEO in American English) or managing director (MD in British English) describes the position of the most senior corporate officer, executive, or administrator in charge of managing an organization. Streets and tunnel entrances have been decked out in a sea of red flags and Communist-style welcoming banners for President Xi Jinping’s three-day visit. It is Mr Xi’s first visit to Hong Kong since becoming China’s leader in 2012. Some areas of Admiralty and Wan Chai are in a state of lock down with roads closed and massive barricades erected to shield the big-wigs plus, of course, stringent security checks. With me in the studio are Ronny Tong, a new member of the Executive Council and we also have a former member of the Hong Kong Basic Law Drafting Committee, Martin Lee.
During his tenure as Hong Kong’s last governor, Chris Patten was called all sorts of names by Chinese top officials and state media. He was labeled a whore, a serpent, a tango dancer and “a sinner for a thousand years”. But to most people in Hong Kong, he was affectionately known as “Fat Pang” and remembered for his liking of egg tarts and engagement with the public. 20 years after boarding the royal yacht Britannia to leave Hong Kong, he says the city is still close to his heart. Producer Nina Loh talked to Chris Patten in London. where he recalled his five years as Governor as being his “happiest years”.

The two concerts will perform music written by various American Composers in the first half conducted by Ms Stephanie Chan of VOV 陳鳴鶯老師 whom was the former Music Director of the St Paul Co-educational College in HK. A Chinese music ensemble (i.e. Dizi & Xiao竹笛、簫, Pipa 琵琶, Sung 笙 and Gaohu & Erhu 高胡、二胡) lead by Dr Ricky Yeung from HK will present the traditional Chinese Folk Music. The highlight is a joint force of over 100-member joint-choir accompanied by the Pipe Organ 管風琴, the Western Orchestra augmented by the Chinese instruments. This unique combination is unprecedented.
World Peace is one of the main themes of the concerts as described in the singing text of the USA Premiere ‘Symphony No.8: This Boundless Land’ 第八交響曲 : 蒼茫大地 composed and conducted by the HK composer Prof. Chan Wing Wah 陳永華教授 with lyrics written by San Francisco-based writer Dr Sonia Ng 吳瑞卿博士. This Boundless Land, Chan’s Eighth Symphony commissioned by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra won the Golden Sail Award for music and lyrics of the CASH in 2008.
香港聖樂團 與 美國三藩市灣區清韻合唱團 聯合舉行两場名為 “慶祝香港回歸20周年暨港美音樂文化之旅" 音樂會 先在6月23日 晚上 8 至 9:30 假 美國三藩市赫伯斯特劇院 舉行 ; 並在6月25日 晚上 8 - 9:30 假 洛杉機的華特.迪士尼音樂廳 舉行。這是一個中國 香港 美國 的文化交流活動，同時亦是為慶祝中國成立香港特別行政區20週年纪念。

Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the new chief executive, delivered a speech at the swearing-in ceremony in Hong Kong, as the special administrative region marks the 20th anniversary of its return to China.
With a humble heart that she accepts this greatest honor of her life and prepare to take on the greatest challenge in her public service career, she said in her inauguration speech.
"To accurately and comprehensively fulfill my duties as chief executive, I will resolutely do everything within my ability to implement the 'one country, two systems’ principle, uphold the Basic Law of the HKSAR, defend the rule of law, and promote a deep and positive relationship between the central government and the HKSAR.
"In the new circumstances and conflicts of the society over the past few years, these seemingly straightforward and necessary tasks will test my political wisdom, ability to mediation and patience. I will, as I always have, rise to these challenges and firmly take actions in accordance with the law against any acts that will undermine the country’s sovereignty, security and development interests, ensure the implementation of 'one country and two systems' principle in Hong Kong in a comprehensive manner," she vowed.
"I will live up to the great trust of the central government and the people of Hong Kong," Lam said.
In the conclusion of her speech, she said: "I look forward to going along with you all to build a better Hong Kong."
Before the speech, Lam was sworn in before President Xi Jinping, who oversaw the swearing-in ceremony. Then, the principal officials of the fifth-term HKSAR government also took their oaths before Xi.
Members of the Executive Council of the HKSAR were sworn in by Lam.

Xi said the central government has fully acknowledged his work during his five-year tenure of office.
Xi also met with senior representatives of the region's executive, legislative and judicial bodies later on Thursday.
Xi arrived in Hong Kong earlier the same day for a three-day inspection tour. The president is scheduled to attend celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the HKSAR's fifth-term government, to be led by incoming chief executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngo.

First method to travel HK with 20 bucks:
Book a hostel (~$18) and buy an egg sandwich at 7/11.
Second method to travel HK with 20 bucks:
MAKE A FRIEND, sleep on their couch, have 20 bucks left over do actually do stuff for the whole day (the method I chose).
