Episode 1822 - Japan : Tradition & Culture This week Dennis Wholey experiences the profound cultural depth of Japan. Throughout the country Dennis finds that despite being one of the most modern countries on earth, Japan is still rooted in its traditions and culture. Segments focus on meditation in the mountain temples of Koyasan, traditional Washoku cuisine in Kyoto and Shinto beliefs at the Meiji Shrine in the heart of Tokyo.
Japan is an awesome place to visit, and no one should let "rules" get in the way of that! But Japanese culture can be very different to what we're used to at times, and some things we do that may be acceptable for us can be surprising and rude in Japan. My husband, Jun, and I put together a list of the most common things we see that can cause trouble (I speak from the perspective of having done all of these!) Mainly, this is if you plan on establishing yourself in a Japanese community through work/family--if you're visiting as a tourist then you don't really have to worry so much about it. :) As a foreigner you won't be held to the same standards as Japanese people, but if you want to give a really good impression then these are some guidelines you can follow! None of these are things you...

Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "what you like" or "what you want", and yaki meaning "grilled" or "cooked". Okonomiyaki is mainly associated with the Kansai or Hiroshima areas of Japan, but is widely available throughout the country. Toppings and batters tend to vary according to region. Tokyo okonomiyaki is usually smaller than a Hiroshima or Kansai okonomiyaki.

Bamboo Listen/bæmˈbuː/ (Bambuseae) is a tribe of flowering perennial evergreen plants in the grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family. In bamboos, the internodal regions of the stem are hollow and the vascular bundles in the cross section are scattered throughout the stem instead of in a cylindrical arrangement. The dicotyledonous woody xylem is also absent. The absence of secondary growth wood causes the stems of monocots, even of palms and large bamboos, to be columnar rather than tapering. Bamboos are some of the fastest-growing plants in the world, due to a unique rhizome-dependent system. Bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia, being used...

Secrets of the Samurai Sword. Japanese Culture English archers had their longbows, Old West sheriffs had their six-guns, but samurai warriors had the most fearsome weapon of all: the razor-sharp, unsurpassed technology of the katana, or samurai sword. In this program, NOVA probes the centuries-old secrets that went into forging what many consider the perfect blade. The beauty and lethality of the curved steel blade became identified with the distinctive culture of those who wielded it so expertly: the samurai warriors of medieval Japan, celebrated in countless Japanese woodcuts, prints, and films. Fifteen traditional Japanese craftsmen spent nearly six months creating the sword that NOVA follows through production, from smelting the ore to forging the steel to sharpening the blade to a k...
