Fushimi Inari Taisha(伏見稲荷大社?) is the head shrine of Inari, located in Fushimi-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines.
Since in early Japan Inari was seen as the patron of business, each of the Torii is donated by a Japanese business. First and foremost though, Inari is the god of rice.
Merchants and manufacturers worship Inari for wealth. Donated torii lining footpaths are part of the scenic view.
This popular shrine is said to have as many as 32,000 sub-shrines (bunsha(分社?)) throughout Japan.
The shrine became the object of Imperial patronage during the early Heian period. In 965 Emperor Murakami decreed that messengers carry written accounts of important events to the guardian kami of Japan. These heihaku were initially presented to 16 shrines including the Inari Shrine.
From 1871 through 1946, Fushimi Inari-taisha was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha(官幣大社?), meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.

Both of us finally travelled around Kyoto by bike (click here to read our Cycling Tips in Kyoto) and our first destination was this stunning Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine. It's the place that you should go while in Kyoto. The thousands of gates are fascinating! We explored the mountain or hiking trails and the shrine buildings where everything is so attractive.
Kyoto's Fushimi Inari Shine's 10,000 Gates Explored ★ WAORYU! ONLY in JAPAN
Adventure in Kyoto! Loads of culture and history in one city.
We've got all that and more in this episode of ONLY in JAPAN.
Kyoto's "Shrine of 10,000 'Torii'" or Gates is simply awesome. It's also ranked as Japan's no.1 attraction for foreign tourists*
Yes, it can be crowded during the day, but we'll explore this mysterous shrine at night when no one is around -- except the wildlife and a few stragglers.
This time, John will explore and explain Kyoto's most popular shrine, Fushimi Inari.
HISTORY:
Fushimi Inari is full of history going back to the year 717!
John interviews one of the Shinto priests and unravel some of the history that might not be in guidebooks. The lengend of Fushimi Inari is revealed!
Are those gates orange or red?
What's the meaning behind the color?
Which big Hollywood movie was this shrine featured in?
Who cleans all these gates?
John wants to know.
WHEN TO VISIT:
It may seem impossible to escape the crowds here, but you can!
The hours are officially listed as 10:00 to 16:00 but the shrine is open to all free of charge 24 hours a day.
Best of all it's FREE! Why? The gates!! They're all bought by people and businesses to bring them luck.
The best time to see it is at night. It's when most locals go with thewir friends, high school couples can be seen climbing up together. Night time adventurers will also see a lot of cats! That rustling you hear on the woods outside the orange gates may not always be a cat though ....
KYOTO BY BICYCLE:
How do you get to Fushimi Inari from Kyoto Station?
I could draw you a map, but it's much better to show you by bicycle!
Rent a cycle for the day and see more of Kyoto. Cheap and easy.
KCTP (Kyoto Cycling Tour Project) has a good variety of city bicycles for the surrounding hills or the city. You can reserve online or call and have the bike waiting for you as soon as you arrive.
The city is not always cycle friendly so keep to the left side, use the light after dark and try to avoid pedestrian sidewalks.
HOW TO GET THERE:
Here's the Google Map https://goo.gl/maps/qXalt
Take the JR Nara line from Kyoto Station for 3 stops or rent a bicycle :) Taxi takes about 10-15 minutes.

Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the head shrine of Inari, located in southern Kyoto, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of Mt. Inari which is 233 metres above sea level, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines which span 4 kilometers and takes approximately 2 hours to walk up.
Since early Japan, Inari was seen as the patron of business, and merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshipped Inari. Each of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha is donated by a Japanese business. First and foremost, though, Inari is the god of rice.
This popular shrine is said to have as many as 32,000 sub-shrines throughout Japan.

Kyoto Script:
JAPAN TRAINS AND JAPAN RAILWAY PASS:
No seriously, these things are shockingly punctual, we’re talking an average delay time of only 36 seconds punctual. The Shinkansen network of high speed trains has been operating in Japan for over half a century when the first line opened in 1964 connecting Tokyo and Osaka…Since then, the network has expanded into one of the most modern and reliable transportation systems in the world, with nearly 10 billion passengers served to date. Exactly 2 hrs and 17 mins after leaving Tokyo, we arrived at our destination, eager to explore… but of course murphy's law had to kick in and mess everything up….
JAPANESE HEALTHCARE / HOSPITAL VISIT:
It was only 3 weeks ago that I found myself in a South Korean hospital with chest infection.. and now here I was again in Japan with a UTI… Annoying? Yes, but we were also lucky to have this happen in two of the best countries to get sick in as an uninsured foreigner. The whole ordeal only took about an hour and a half, which included a consultation, testing, and a prescription for antibiotics…
FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE:
About 10 mins outside of downtown kyoto at the base of Mount Inari sits the shinto shrine: Fushimi Inari Taisha. A site famous for hundreds of vermilion torii gates, which straddle a network of trails that lead you 4 km into a wooded forest. Once we got past the hordes of people all vying for that perfect shot of the torii gates, we found ourselves pretty much alone deep within the gardens and sub-shrines. Fushimi Inari was built to worship the shinto and buddhist deity named Inari, the God of rice and prosperity and his fleet of messenger foxes. In Japan, the fox is considered a powerful ally in warding off evil influences as they themselves are magical and tricky shape-shifters. We didn’t see any foxes roaming the shrine but from the looks of it, another tricky creature had taken their place….
ARASHIYAMA BAMBOO GROVE / BAMBOO FOREST:
On the outskirts of Kyoto lies another iconic and photogenic site “The bamboo forest of Arshiyama” - much like the Fushimi Inari shrine, this was another one of those super idyllic, desktop wallpaper type places that we've dreamt about visiting for years. Now, if you do an image search on this place, the results will come back with what looks like a magical and forgotten trail where you’ll be alone amongst the towering bamboo stalks. That was the expectation, but the reality was something more like this…
KYOTO THOUGHTS:
So what can I say about Kyoto? Am I thankful for my time here? Yes. Is it everything I thought it would be? Not really. Now in all fairness, the whole going to the hospital thing definitely had an impact on our momentum ,but if I had to sum it up in one thought, it would be that while we SAW things in Kyoto… we EXPERIENCED Tokyo. For us, our Kyoto visit served as a reminder that having a memorable trip isn’t defined by how many desktop wallpapers you check off the list. Rather, it’s about experiencing the place you’re in by interacting with your environment, and getting a sense of the local vibe. Less seeing, more doing. So with that in mind, we set out with our remaining time in Kyoto looking for a uniquely Japanese experience that we still hadn't fully explored
IZAKAYA:
Ok so this is it, the most memorable part of our short stop in Kyoto was the food, now... our restaurant going experience was great, if a bit embarrassing at times due to our cluelessness, but things really got serious when we stumbled upon our first Izakaya
Think of an Izakaya as a small pub with tons of atmosphere and most importantly, some of the best food you’ve ever tasted. This is exactly the experience we were looking for.

On a crisp day in early November the Kyoto Fan team took a trip to Fushimi Inari Taisha, one of the most famous shrines in the whole city. With the harvest season at an end, it was time for the Ōhitaki Fire Festival!
Being the head shrine for the 30,000 plus Inari Shrines around the country, Fushimi Inari attracts a great number of visitors and parishioners from around Japan, and many come to Kyoto to participate in this event. The first part of the ritual begins in the shrine's main hall where priests present offerings of food and drink, the head priest reads prayers aloud, priestesses perform a sacred kagura dance to classic gagaku music, and the priests lead those gathered in paying their respects to the deity Inari.
From 13:00 the priests and parisioners move on to a cleared space on the shrine grounds where three bonfires have been set up. Once everyone is assembled the fires are simulatenously lit. Once the smoke clears priests begin tossing bundles of prayer sticks in to fires in large, dramatic throws, scattering the wishes of Inari shrine visitors in to the fire. A copy of the purification prayer is passed out in the crowd so that not only the priests, but any attendee who wants to participate can join in on the sacred prayer chanted for everyone’s good health, fortune, and the country’s prosperity.
The heat and flames provide a dramatic backdrop as priests undertake cleansing rituals in front of each fire using water, salt, and sakaki leaves, and sacred kagura dances are performed intermittedly by shrine priestesses carrying golden bells. Slowly the mass of prayer sticks assembled before the ritual date begins to dwindle until the last word of the prayer rings out and the fire ritual ends. Set against the autumn sky and foliage, it's said that this ritual and the fires calls to Inari to come back to Mt. Inari to rest for the winter months after its hard work in the rice fields during the harvest- and it certainly called to us as well!

Even though there were a lot of visitors at the temple, the further we go it's getting quieter. We took a lot of pictures, especially when we were inside the "tunnel" of red gates along the way. It was truly beautiful, unlike anything else we've ever seen.

Like what we do?
Buy us Lunch at: http://tinyurl.com/donate-to-the-camps
