A brake is a mechanical device which inhibits motion. Its opposite component is a clutch. The rest of this article is dedicated to various types of vehicular brakes.
Most commonly brakes use friction to convert kinetic energy into heat, though other methods of energy conversion may be employed. For example regenerative braking converts much of the energy to electrical energy, which may be stored for later use. Other methods convert kinetic energy into potential energy in such stored forms as pressurized air or pressurized oil. Eddy current brakes use magnetic fields to convert kinetic energy into electric current in the brake disc, fin, or rail, which is converted into heat. Still other braking methods even transform kinetic energy into different forms, for example by transferring the energy to a rotating flywheel.
Brakes are generally applied to rotating axles or wheels, but may also take other forms such as the surface of a moving fluid (flaps deployed into water or air). Some vehicles use a combination of braking mechanisms, such as drag racing cars with both wheel brakes and a parachute, or airplanes with both wheel brakes and drag flaps raised into the air during landing.

24 muzzle devices for .30 caliber are tested for recoil reduction on a Lancer Systems L30 Heavy Metal .308 (AR-10 / SR-25). Each brake gets tested two times on my recoil sled system and recoil distance is compared to a bare muzzle to see which brake reduces rearwards recoil energy the most. Only one round of Gorilla Ammunition's .308 with 175 grain Sierra MatchKing is loaded for each shot. The Lancer L30's Syrac gas block is turned off, so the action stays locked in battery the entire time. Everything is measured by me in 1/16th inch increments, then converted to decimals in Excel for the final graphs and charts. Here is a full length version of a video that I posted some time ago, this way you can watch the entire thing in one sitting instead of switching from one video to the next. If your watching this for the first time I'm aware that sandals are not the best thing to wear when doing auto repair. In addition there IS a jack stand just out of frame in the video I just leave the floor jack in place while I work normally where it is so that it's quicker to let the car down when I'm done.

24 muzzle devices for .30 caliber are tested for recoil reduction on a Lancer Systems L30 Heavy Metal .308 (AR-10 / SR-25). Each brake gets tested two times on my recoil sled system and recoil distance is compared to a bare muzzle to see which brake reduces rearwards recoil energy the most. Only one round of Gorilla Ammunition's .308 with 175 grain Sierra MatchKing is loaded for each shot. The Lancer L30's Syrac gas block is turned off, so the action stays locked in battery the entire time. Everything is measured by me in 1/16th inch increments, then converted to decimals in Excel for the final graphs and charts. I'm reading it all out in eighths and not reducing fractions so every single result is expressed in the same unit of measurement for convenient comparison. When dealing with brake fluid, take care not to spill the fluid onto a hot engine. Seek assistance immediately if the brake pedal travel is unusually long or if there is any significant loss of brake fluid. Brakes are a common DIY project but I often get asked about brake calipers and how to check if they're bad. This video not only shows how to find a bad brake caliper but also how to replace it. It is recommended that you do both sides when you find a faulty brake caliper but it's not necessary. If you're on a budget you can just do one but you might experience a pull to one side when braking if you do this. Otherwise you can follow the steps in this video for caliper replacement. I use my 1997 Subaru Legacy L in this video but the principals and techniques apply to many vehicles both domestic and imported.

In the past few videos I've been getting my Fairmont ready to take to the drag strip. Since I discovered some brake issues I thought it best to address those. In this video I rebuild the right front caliper. Turns out after I replaced the brake hoses that it was sticking and not releasing. Not wanting to spend the money on a new caliper, I decided to go for a rebuild. Now may of you may question the logic of doing this, especially when you see the caliper piston, but keep in mind my intention is to replace the entire brake system when I upgrade the engine and suspension on this car so it doesn't make sense to make a huge investment in this car as it is now. So for the naysayers, it's temporary, chill out. Either way I hope you enjoy this video and that it helps you if you find yourself needing to rebuild a front brake caliper. It is a cheap alternative IF your piston isn't all corroded. BTW it's not likely your piston isn't going to be all corroded. Good luck.
