Living in the Shadows of a Volcano
Kagoshima City is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Kagoshima Prefecture and is a castle town dating back to the 14th century. The city and its suburbs are located on the northeastern part of Satsuma Peninsula and face the Kagoshima Bay, which is more commonly known as Kinko Bay.
The smoking Sakurajima centered in Kinko Bay is one of the main symbols of Kagoshima Prefecture. Throughout history Sakurajima (4 km from central Kagoshima City) has been the site of multiple massive eruptions and continues to be one of the most well-known active volcanos in the world. Sakurajima was originally an isolated island however, as a result of the eruption of 1914, the island was joined to the adjacent Osumi Peninsula. The leva fields can still be seen on the island as testament to the history of the volcano's eruptions. - Japan Tourism

In this episode:
- walking through the Kagoshima famous Tennonkan arcade (天文館アーケード). It is the busiest part of the city - full with shops and restaurants. Tenmonkan means observatory - once upon a time there was such in the center of the city.
Also we tried the famous Kagoshima ramen (鹿児島ラーメン) and kurobuta gyoza (黒豚餃子). Kagoshima ramen is very different in taste from the rest of the Japanese ramens but it is delicious - may be one of the best!
It was also very interesting to find bags with volcanic trash in the center of the city. Despite the big cleaning the remnants of the big eruption from 18/8 were still ubiquitous!
We also saw the statue of a famous samurai and his wife (Kagoshima was the place of the last Samurai's rebellion).
Finally we reached the Kagoshima Water Front and the kids had a lot of fun with the fountains! :) Follow us on twitter:

Kagoshima (鹿児島市, Kagoshima-shi?) is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the southwestern tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the "Naples of the Eastern world" for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and impressive stratovolcano, Sakurajima.
As of 1 January 2010, the city had an estimated population of 605,855 and a density of 1,107.49 persons per km². The total area is 546.71 km². In 2003, the city had an estimated population of only 554,136 and density of 1,911.41 persons per km². The total area was 289.91 km².
The city's total area nearly doubled between 2003 and 2005 as a result of five towns—the towns of Kōriyama and Matsumoto, both from Hioki District, the town of Kiire, from Ibusuki District, and the towns of Sakurajima and Yoshida, both from Kagoshima District—merging into Kagoshima on November 1, 2004.
Kagoshima is approximately 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and the city features large shopping districts and malls, is served by trams, and has many restaurants featuring Satsuma Province regional cuisine: kibi (a kind of tiny fish), tonkatsu (caramelized pork, as opposed to the breaded version encountered elsewhere in Japan), smoked eel, and karukan (sweet cakes made from steamed yams and rice flour). A large, modern aquarium has been installed on the old docks overlooking the volcano. The Sengan-en (Isoteien) Japanese garden is just outside the city.

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Marine Steve and I made a beeline to a small street near the Kagoshima train station for Pork Tonkatsu, Japanese for a good 'ole deep fried pork cutlet or schnitzel, more popular than chicken in Japan. Kagoshima is a leading producer of pork, and the Kagoshima kurobuta (black pig) is perhaps the most highly regarded variety. Once we found the recommended restaurants by stopping to point at Japanese characters written down by guide, it wasn't easy to decide on sirloin, filet, and other cuts of black pork. It was yummy but I couldn't decipher any difference in taste between the "black" pig or any ordinary pig.. -

Godzilla Attacks Kagoshima and Kumamoto
Well, he passes through, anyway. This is from "Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla" from 1994. It's cool that the places they show in Kagoshima are places I go to or am around three or four times a week. Sakurajima was originally an isolated island however, as a result of the eruption of 1914, the island was joined to the adjacent Osumi Peninsula. Also we tried the famous Kagoshima ramen (鹿児島ラーメン) and kurobuta gyoza (黒豚餃子). Kagoshima ramen is very different in taste from the rest of the Japanese ramens but it is delicious - may be one of the best!
It was also very interesting to find bags with volcanic trash in the center of the city. Despite the big cleaning the remnants of the big eruption from 18/8 were still ubiquitous!
We also saw the statue of a famous samurai and his wife (Kagoshima was the place of the last Samurai's rebellion).

Marine Steve and I made a beeline to a small street near the Kagoshima train station for Pork Tonkatsu, Japanese for a good 'ole deep fried pork cutlet or schnitzel, more popular than chicken in Japan.
Kagoshima is a leading producer of pork, and the Kagoshima kurobuta (black pig) is perhaps the most highly regarded variety. Once we found the recommended restaurants by stopping to point at Japanese characters written down by guide, it wasn't easy to decide on sirloin, filet, and other cuts of black pork. It was yummy but I couldn't decipher any difference in taste between the "black" pig or any ordinary pig... What do I know...

Part of a larger tourist facility that includes a hotel, shops and restaurants, the Magma Onsen has hot spring baths that are open to day trippers. It should be noted that the baths have large windows and you can look out across water to Kagoshima City.
Hours: 10:00 to 22:00
Every Wednesday open from 13:00-for cleaning)
Admission: 300 yen
Closed: No closing days
A hand towel is available for 200yen.
About Sakurajima
Sakurajima, one of Japan's most active volcanoes and is the symbol of Kagoshima. The volcano emits smoke constantly, and minor eruptions often occur many times per day. Located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, Sakurajima is the area's most splendid geographic feature as it is located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay. It has an elevation of 1117 meters and a circumference of about 50 kilometers. A Powerful eruption happened and burned everything in 1914, however, grasses and plants are growing these days.

In Sakurajima
Travelers visiting Sakurajima can find many attractions just around the Ferry Terminal, including an onsen, foot baths, short hiking trails and an information center. Those who would like to further explore the volcano should travel by rental car, which can be taken across the water from Kagoshima by the ferries. Sightseeing buses, regular buses and rental bicycles are other possible methods of travel.
The way up to Sakurajima
Kagoshima and Sakurajima are connected around the clock by frequent ferries. The one way ride takes 15 minute and costs 160 yen. The ferry terminal is a ten minute walk from JR Kagoshima Station or a five minute walk from the Suizokukan-guchi tram stop, and is also served by the City View Buses.
There are also regular city buses that run infrequently from the ferry terminal along the northern coast (departures every 1-3 hours) and along the southern coast (departures every 40-90 minutes) of Sakurajima.

A volcano erupted Friday in southwest Japan, sending bursts of lava flowing out of the side. Mount Sakurajima unleashed grey smoke and streaking flashes of lightning. There were no immediate reports of injuries, according to the Guardian, but officials did ban entry to the site. The eruption was minor compared to previous fits by Mount Sakurajima.
