Previews and Openings
‘The Audience’ (in previews; opens on Sunday) Long live the queen! And the dame, too. In Peter Morgan’s play, Helen Mirren portrays Queen Elizabeth II as she conducts weekly meetings with 12 different prime ministers over 60 years. The play also stars Judith Ivey as Margaret Thatcher, Dylan Baker as John Major and Dakin Matthews as Winston Churchill. Stephen Daldry, who directed this play’s London debut, oversees the Broadway run. Schoenfeld Theater, 236 West 45th Street, 212-239-6200, theaudiencebroadway.com. (Alexis Soloski)
‘Brothers From the Bottom’ (previews start on Friday; opens on Sunday) The streets on the cusp of Fort Greene and Downtown Brooklyn are smartening up at a head-spinning clip. Resonantly, the Billie Holiday Theater, temporarily located there, will offer this new play about gentrification. Wendell Pierce (“The Wire,” “Treme”) stars as one of two brothers confronting a changing New Orleans neighborhood. Brooklyn Music School Playhouse, 126 Saint Felix Street, near Lafayette Avenue, Fort Greene, 718-636-0918, thebillieholiday.org. (Soloski)
‘The Evening’ (previews start on Thursday; opens on March 15) A fighter, a manager and a prostitute walk into a bar and find themselves in the midst of a Richard Maxwell play. The playwright and director Mr. Maxwell, a paragon of undramatic theater, returns with this brief show, partly inspired by his father’s death. The first installment of an imagined triptych, it explores how we live our lives and how we escape and transform them. The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street, Chelsea, 212-255-5793, Ext. 11, thekitchen.org. (Soloski)
