Biggie was killed over the hip hop rap beef the east coast had with the west coast and more specifically with
2pac Tupac Shakur and
Death Row Records,
Deathrow records consisted of snoop dogg, kurupt, daz , and this beef stemed from a shooting in
New York.
while a prolonged era of
peace has settled over rappers who hail from the
East Coast and those from the
West, last month the conflict, which culminated in the murders of
L.A.’s Tupac Shakur and
Brooklyn’s Notorious B.I.G., returned to the news.
Dexter Isaac, who is serving life for an unrelated murder-for-hire, confessed to the
1994 shooting of
Tupac that triggered the war. Isaac alleges that a music manager named
James “
Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond paid him $2,
500 for the attack. Shortly thereafter, Rosemond was arrested on a separate charge. Are the cases about to be cracked?
While starring in
Poetic Justice (alongside
Janet Jackson), Tupac meets and befriends Biggie.
Later, Biggie chalks it up to a “
Gemini thing. We just clicked.”
NOVEMBER 30, 1994
Then Tupac is robbed and shot (five times!) in a midtown recording-studio lobby; when he makes it into the studio, he finds Biggie, along with music producers
Sean Combs and
Andre Harrell, seemingly unconcerned. “I noticed nobody would look at me.”
APRIL
1995
Tupac all but accuses Biggie, Combs, and Harrell of being behind the shooting in an interview with
Vibe. The three men deny it in a later issue.

Meanwhile, there’s an East Coast–
West Coast rivalry going, typified by L.A.-based Death Row Records
CEO Suge Knight’s public derision of Combs’s habit of inserting himself in his artist’s work.

Tupac gets out of prison (he’d been in for a sexual-abuse charge) and is signed to West Coast powerhouse

Biggie and Tupac’s crews spar verbally; a gun is pulled.
SPRING 1996
In Tupac’s video for “
2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted,” a stand-in for Combs is depicted telling a stand-in for Biggie that he was going to be ascendant after Tupac’s demise.
SUMMER 1996
Tupac releases “
Hit ‘Em Up,” on which he makes death threats; peevishly revisits his feelings of betrayal (“Biggie, remember when I let you sleep on the couch?”); and claims to have slept with Biggie’s wife,
Faith Evans.
SEPTEMBER 13, 1996
Tupac, 25, is shot to death in
Las Vegas. No one is caught.
MARCH 9,
1997
Two days after being booed at the Soul Train Awards Biggie, 24, is shot and killed in L.A.
Again, no one is caught.
2002
An
L.A. Times report alleges that Biggie was responsible for Tupac’s murder. Meanwhile, Biggie’s mother, Voletta
Wallace, files suit against the
City of L.A., accusing the police of negligence in investigating her son’s murder.
2005
Rolling Stone points to allegations that Suge Knight may have had a role in both of deaths, possibly because Tupac was going to leave his label. Why he’d have Biggie killed is less clear, but the mag claims
Knight admitted it to various associates. It also alleges that members of the
LAPD were on Knight’s take.
2008
The L.A.
Times runs a story alleging Combs’s involvement in the 1994 shooting, followed by a front-page retraction.
JANUARY
2011
The LAPD’s investigation into Biggie’s murder is reinvigorated after undisclosed information comes to light.
JUNE 2011
While the
NYPD looks into the validity of Isaac’s confession, Rosemond is under arrest by the
DEA for conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
