Messina (Italian pronunciation: [mesˈsiːna] (
listen), Sicilian: Missina; Latin: Messana) is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, Italy and the capital of the province of Messina. It has a population of about 250,000 inhabitants in the city proper and about 650,000 in the province. It is located near the northeast corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, just opposite Villa San Giovanni on the mainland.
The main economical resources of the city are: the port (commercial and military), provided with several shipyards; agriculture (including wine production and the cultivation of lemons, oranges, mandarin oranges and olives); tourism.
The city has been a Roman Catholic Archdiocese and Archimandrite seat since 1548 and is home to a locally important international fair.
Founded by Greek colonists in the 8th century BC, Messina was originally called Zancle, from the Greek: ζάγκλον meaning "scythe" because of the shape of its natural harbour (though a legend attributes the name to King Zanclus). A comune of its province, located at the southern entrance of the Strait of Messina, is to this day called 'Scaletta Zanclea'. In the early 5th century BC, Anaxilas of Rhegium renamed it Messene in honour of the Greek city Messene (Greek: Μεσσήνη). (See also List of traditional Greek place names.) The city was sacked in 397 BC by the Carthaginians and then reconquered by Dionysius I of Syracuse.

"Danny's Song" written by Kenny Loggins, first appeared on Sittin' In, the debut album by singer-songwriters, Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina, released in 1971 on the Columbia Records. It was later released on CD on the Sony label. The song was a big hit for Anne Murray in 1972. The personnel on the original recording were: Kenny Loggins - vocals, guitar, harmonica, Jim Messina - vocals, bass guitar, Lester "Al" Garth - violin, recorder, saxophone, steel drum, background vocals, Michael Omartian - concertina, keyboards, steel drum, Jon Clarke - horn, oboe, saxophone, steel drum, Larry Sims - bass instrument, background vocals, Merel Bregante - drums, background vocals, and Milt Holland -- percussion. If we mention Messina everybody thinks of Messina Strait. This is the point where we can reach Sicily from Italy by ferry.
As the two and a half thousand-year old city was almost destroyed in the two catastrophes, one of which was the earthquake in 1908 and the other was World War II. They can't boast as many monuments as its neighbors. Its huge harbor itself is a stirring colorful sight. Its worth-visiting San Francesco church was named after Saint Francis of Assisi. In front of it is the life size statue of the saint opening his arms towards us can be seen.
Annunziata dei Catalani Church is the only Norman monument of Messina. In front of it, the statue of Don Juan de Austria who beat the Greek and the marine battle at Lepanto can be found.
The minister in Messina has kept nothing of its original form after being converted twice. The Montreal Soli most famous work "The Orion Well" made in 1547 was very beautiful. The four figures of this well signify the four big rivers -- the Tiberius, the Nile, the Ebro, and the Cameramus. The statues of the original work can be found at the Museo Nazinale in Nacina. The one that stands in the square is a certified copy. A trip up to the 60-meter bell free of the minister is worth it because of the view of the city and the harbor. The spectacular, astronomical clock is not as old as we would think. It was made in 1933. Its gold figures come to life every 15 minutes to designate the passing time with the—
The three old gates of the façade with some Gothic sculptures remained from the 15th and 16th centuries. The rest was destroyed by earthquakes and bombs. On the dials of the astronomical clock, we can observe the changes of the moon and the stars.
The three aisle interior with the carpeted frame roof is a result of renovations after World War 2. Only some tombs and the mosaics of the Apses are original; but, the painting and sculptures are also very beautiful.
The romantic atmosphere of Sicily has inspired several artists, sculptors, painters, and of course, poets. Up the hill, the—narrow road between two stone barriers, our northern eyes see an orange. Palm trees flowing on the stone walls, Tuscolanum, dell sound of a cricket. Cicero listen to it at night. White, cool wine at the cellars, Casanova drank this.

The best pizza in town is Pizza Capitano just off Piazza Cairoli. The owner is a little gruff however the wood oven gives an authentic Sicilian flavor. Its also excellent value and is always busy especially during Series A football matches when the atmosphere reaches fever pitch.

The picturesque Baroque of the city has such monuments as a San Giorgio Church or the Santa Maria delle Scale Church dating back to the 15th century or the Pro Patria monument. In his famous work, "Italian Journey", Gouda writes about the antique monuments of Sicily with enthusiasm. Before and after him, many people have shared this order.
The diverse sides of the island are due to its mixed history. The native Siccans were conquered by Punic and Greek people. In 212 B.C., they were followed by the Romans who made the island their independent probincia. A thousand years later, Saracants, that is, Arabian people arrived. They were beat by the Norman -- a French origin. After the [Foreign Language] Dynasty died out, the German Howenstaus then the French Anju finally succeeded. The Famous folk rising called the Sicilian even song "Dispel the Anju". Then, with the help of the pope the Spanish Oregonion house gained power later following to the Hapsburgs hand. They were succeeded by the Savoy and Bourbon house until the island joined the Untied Italian Kingdom.
Siracusa is the most severely city on the Ionic Sea and was founded on 734 B.C. by the Greek Conrintha's on the island of Artesia. During its hay-day, it's a as big as it is today. Today, the island to the mainland is connected with a bridge. The place of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides used to be performed in the Greek theater. Today, we can adore the sunset from its semi-circle benches. Archimedes controlled the technical defenses of Siracusa besieged by the Romans with catapults and among other things, paraball and mirrors. The scholar was killed by a Roman soldier who didn't care about Archimedes famous saying "Don't disturb my circles". The scholar's tomb was alleged to be near Latomia Del Paradiso, a quarry. The huge castle-like quarry with its collapsed top became well-known when 7,000 prisoners of war were imprisoned here.
Dionysus Theranus heard the prisoners talking to each other in an echoing cave and the cave has been called Dionysus Ear ever since. All over the island the products of craftsmen are popular. In Siracusa, the custom-made products of ceramics are especially popular with tourists.
The ships going to Malta set-off from the harbor of the city. A small alley, Paseo Aretusa, leaves to the harbor from where bay sis beautiful especially at sunset. The main square is decorated by a spectacular Diana fountain dating back to 1906. The side of the old town lining the peninsula reminds us of Dubrovnik that the buildings seen here represent several centuries in several styles. Frederick II was responsible for the building of the fortress Castella Mariachi extending to the sea. The building of Palazo Bellomo dates back to the 13th century, the showpiece of its museum, and the painting Angelic Reading by Messina. St. John's catacombs remain from old Christian times from the yard of a monastery which fell into decay.
The minister was built on the side of the Minerva Church partly using its reminders. Its exterior pats were converted in Baroque style later on. Some columns of the huge three-aisle building belong to the Minerva Church. In the chapel, we can see the silver sculpture of Saint Lucia who scratched off her own eyes because one of the admirers complimented them. The beautiful altar pictures are also a work by Messina.
Siracus boast everything that the other cities of Sicily have. Siracusa can hold its own with any other city of Sicily. There's an excavation and archaeological museum -- the Apollo sanctuary and cathedral, the Greek theater and Roman anti-theater, Gothic fortress and medieval catacombs. But it has something that no other Sicilian cities have.
There's a legend about the spring of Arathusa. The nymph has turned into a spring here by Alphaes, the God of Rivers. Another curiosity that plays is that in Europe the papyrus of the Nile which was planted here by the Arabians can grow only here in the warm water of the pool.

The side of the old town lining the peninsula reminds us of Dubrovnik that the buildings seen here represent several centuries in several styles. Frederick II was responsible for the building of the fortress Castella Mariachi extending to the sea. The building of Palazo Bellomo dates back to the 13th century, the showpiece of its museum, and the painting Angelic Reading by Messina. St. John's catacombs remain from old Christian times from the yard of a monastery which fell into decay.
The minister was built on the side of the Minerva Church partly using its reminders. Its exterior pats were converted in Baroque style later on. Some columns of the huge three-aisle building belong to the Minerva Church. In the chapel, we can see the silver sculpture of Saint Lucia who scratched off her own eyes because one of the admirers complimented them. The beautiful altar pictures are also a work by Messina.
Siracus boast everything that the other cities of Sicily have. Siracusa can hold its own with any other city of Sicily. There's an excavation and archaeological museum -- the Apollo sanctuary and cathedral, the Greek theater and Roman anti-theater, Gothic fortress and medieval catacombs. But it has something that no other Sicilian cities have.
There's a legend about the spring of Arathusa. The nymph has turned into a spring here by Alphaes, the God of Rivers. Another curiosity that plays is that in Europe the papyrus of the Nile which was planted here by the Arabians can grow only here in the warm water of the pool.

Later came the Arabs and the Normans. Catania is Sicily’s second largest city and has been strongly influenced by earthquakes and also the volcanic activity of Mount Etna. Therefore only a few historical remnants have survived. However, after each disaster the city was rebuilt and the result is a Baroque city dominated by fascinating sights full of character and charm. A devastating earthquake in 1693 destroyed the original town of Noto and left it in ruins. Construction of the new town took almost a hundred years until at end of the eighteenth century most of its buildings had been rebuilt. In addition to the geometrical design of its streets the remarkable architectural harmony of the town has been created by much use of ochre-coloured sandstone. The privately-owned train, the Ferrovia Circumetnea, travels around Mount Etna from Catania to Riposto. A couple of kilometres outside Catania there are vast fertile fields. In the background is the mighty and over three thousand metre high Mount Etna, one of the most active and famous volcanoes in the world. Taormina is situated on a rock high above the Ionic Sea. The Teatro Greco was built out of the stone of Monte Tauro in the third century A.D. and five hundred years later it was enlarged by the Romans for gladiatorial battle. The old town ended at Porta Messina whose medieval palaces and villas have been preserved right up until the present day. A few kilometres from Palermo and set within a beautiful bay is Mondello sheltered by the slopes of Monte Pellegrino that contains a grotto, an altar and a pilgrims church, the Santuario Di Santa Rosalia. Here this fascinating journey comes to an end. Sicily is exquisite, an ancient island of both discovery and pleasure.

If you ever travel in the very south of italy you will certainly experience to cross the Messina strait. The 3.1 km wide water corridor separates Sicily from the Italian peninsula. It is a must do experience even only for a one day trip.
This path once crossed by ancient Phoenician and Greek ships, in the aim to spread their power and grow their wealth has seen myriads of sicilians going to find better luck in the North carrying their heavy luggages on board of packed trains, looking with huge melancholy at their island slowly disappearing at their backs. Of course many of them returned several times back to their home towns, but the feeling of leaving their island will pervade their souls even if they are going away for holiday. Such a strong relationship have Sicilians with their roots, and maybe only them can understand it well.
If you have time and a strong stomach you should take the chance to enjoy the cue at the small bars on the deck and taste the famous arancini (or arancine): deep fried rice balls coated in breadcrumbs and filled wit ragù and cheese. The legend tells the ones you get on the ferry be the best in all Sicily. Even if we can't assure it why don't you put it in your to do list in Sicily.

The belfry mechanically animated statues, which illustrate events from the civil and religious history of the city every day at noon, are a popular touristic attraction.
Church: The building had to be almost entirely rebuilt in 1919-1920, following the devastating 1908 earthquake, and again in 1943, after a fire triggered by Allied bombings.

Owing to the impossibility of getting my camper van under a low and narrow bridge at San Alessio Siculo, I am forced to take the motorway. Nonetheless there cannot be many motorways that offer such wonderful views of the Straights of Messina and Calabria, as well as of the wonderful Sicilian countryside.
This is my longest camper van journey to date - from Catania in Sicily to Tomaszów Lubelski in eastern Poland! In fact the journey is even longer but parts of it are not included. The journey started in Brucoli, Sicily and will finish in Ternopil, Ukraine - and then I will return to Poland and possibly go to the UK.
I will be stopping at various places en route to see what is interesting there as well as to visit friends. I think this could be even longer than the series I did six years ago called Europe 2007. Europe 2013 could end up being 6,000km - and it is far more exciting by being in my camper van!

Visit Mazara Del Vallo on the South Coast for it's Tunisian Quarter.
Visit the Zingaro Reserve on the West Coast of Sicily for some of the best nature walks, natural beaches and examples of the dwarf palm that the area is famous for.
Visit the town of Noto on the South Coast, a Unesco World Heritage site due to the best examples of Baroque Architecture left in Europe today.
Visit the world's largest astronomical clock and the Museo Regionale in Messina .
