Taoyuan International Airport Corporation unveiled a transparent double-deck jet bridge for use by the Airbus A380 airliner. In addition to speeding up boarding and deplaning, the new jet bridge will be equipped with smart sensors that prevent incidental contact.This transparent jet bridge allows visitors the chance to enjoy the airport scenery when they board and exit the plane.To service the Airbus A380, a superjumbo airliner which can transport 560 passengers, Taoyuan International Airport not only combined the C1 and C2 boarding gate but also installed this transparent, double-decker jet bridge. The jet bridge can telescope in just one minute. Special smart sensors reduce the possibility of accidents.Sun Hung-binTaoyuan Airport Maintenance Director When replacing jet bridges, we will add facilities like this with smart features.The new jet bridge became a necessity when Emirates Airlines received permission to land the A380, the world’s largest civilian aircraft, on July 19. A jet bridge (also termed jetway, loading bridge, aerobridge/airbridge, air jetty, portal, passenger walkway or passenger boarding bridge) is an enclosed, movable connector which extends from an airport terminal gate to an airplane, allowing passengers to board and disembark without having to go outside. Depending on building design, sill heights, fueling positions and operational requirements, it may be fixed or movable, swinging radially or extending in length.
Jetway is a registered trademark of JBT AeroTech. However, it is often used in North American parlance to refer to any jet bridge, regardless of manufacturer.
Prior to the introduction of jet bridges, passengers would normally board an aircraft by walking along the ground-level ramp and climbing a set of movable stairs, or up airstairs on aircraft so equipped. Mobile staircases or "ramp stairs" are still employed at many airports around the world, particularly smaller airports and terminals supporting low cost carriers.
The first jet bridge in the United States was installed on July 29, 1959 at San Francisco International Airport.

A jet bridge dropped several feet Tuesday as passengers were exiting a Southwest Airlines flight at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, but no one was injured, officials said. The end of the walkway, where it was attached to the plane, fell 6 to 8 feet. Some passengers were on the bridge at the time, but it was unclear how many, said airport spokesman Perry Cooper. The cause of the drop was described as a mechanical failure. Thanks to a backup system - a large screw under the jetway that turns as it is raised or lowered - the bridge fell slowly, and those who were on it walked up to the gate, Cooper said. American Airlines accident: Mechanic Dave Ostang fatally injured in fall from jet bridge
American Airlines mechanic Dave Ostang was fatally injured in a fall from a jet bridge Tuesday morning. The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. at Terminal D of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Ostang was working on a jet bridge near gate 30. A jet bridge, is used to transport passengers from the terminal gate to the aircraft. Ostang was trying to lock the aircraft door when he fell between the jet bridge walkway and the Boeing 767. The mechanic was fatally injured by the 14-foot fall to the tarmac below. He was transported to Baylor Regional Medical Center where he later succombed to his injuries. (Correction: The video mentions Ostang was 67 — Ostang was only 54 years old.) He had worked for American Airlines for 30 years. --------------------------------------------------... -

A jet bridge dropped several feet Tuesday as passengers were exiting a Southwest Airlines flight at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, but no one was injured, officials said.
The end of the walkway, where it was attached to the plane, fell 6 to 8 feet. Some passengers were on the bridge at the time, but it was unclear how many, said airport spokesman Perry Cooper.
The cause of the drop was described as a mechanical failure. Thanks to a backup system - a large screw under the jetway that turns as it is raised or lowered - the bridge fell slowly, and those who were on it walked up to the gate, Cooper said.
About half of the passengers - 60 people - had exited the aircraft when the walkway fell. The rest left by a stairway brought to the other side of the plane.
A canvas covering designed to protect passengers from the weather also caught on the aircraft's door, pulling the nose of the plane toward the ground. The plane was taken out of service pending inspections for possible damage, a Southwest Airlines official said.
By Tuesday afternoon, crews had brought in a large crane to lift the walkway and allow the plane to back away from it.
The plane, operating as Flight 570, had arrived from Phoenix and was supposed to continue on to Chicago's Midway International Airport.
