The Congress of Vienna: Metternich's Conservative Order (AP Euro)
http://www.tomrichey.net/euro
The Congress of Vienna met in 1814-1815 after Napoleon's defeat to create a blueprint for a peaceful and stable Europe. Prince Klemens von Metternich of Austria was instrumental in laying the groundwork for a conservative order that would last for a generation. It would be nearly 100 years before Europe erupted in another major war of Napoleonic proportions.

Lyrics:
Napoleon did some good things,
Bettered education and helped the military
Exiled to St. Helena,
For using nepotism and conquering all of Europe.
With Napoleon out of power
Europe's in chaos, lost without the Empire,
Four rulers had some ideas,
So they gathered together, to solve what to do:
Russia, Prussia, France
Britain, Austria
Called the conference
To share their ideas,
Russia, Prussia, France
Britain, Austria
Called the conference
The Congress of Vienna.
Every day for a year,
Representatives meet, representatives meet
Metternich takes control
While the others play along
Try establishing peace
Castelreagh from Britain,
Tallyrand from France,
And William of Prussia,
Metternich from Austria
Russian Alex the first
All combined their goals:
They tried to balance power,
To make sure another country
Couldn't get out of hand;
They had conservative views,
Tried to restore European monarchy, yeah
The policy of containment,
Was to keep France in line from taking over again
The quadruple alliance
Included Russia, Prussia, Britain and Austria
Russia, Prussia, France
Britain, Austria
Called the conference
To share their ideas,
Russia, Prussia, France
Britain, Austria

Klemens von Metternich
Aristocracy’s savior
I'm the man of the hour
Gonna carefully restore
Europe's Balance of Power
Eatin’ Nationalists for breakfast
Liberals for my dinner
Gotta be conservative
If you wanna be a winner
I’m the Coachman of Europe
So you better hold your horses
Because all the Great Powers
Are about to join forces
Napoleon thought he was
Too big for Elba
So we threw him on a boat
Straight to St Helena
Threatened European peace
So we set him adrift
Shake the French Revolution
Off like Taylor Swift
Come on, Talleyrand
Take a seat at the table
Because Europe needs a France
That is strong and stable
There’s no need to punish France
I just wanna keep order
And restore the old
1791 borders
The liberals have ideas
That they wanna express
But I shut their mouths up
When I censored the press
Stability between and
Within European States
It’s the goal of this order
That I’m trying to create
SO JOIN ME IN VIENNA
WHERE A CONGRESS IS IN SESSION
TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THE
REVOLUTION FROM PROGRESSIN’
THIS CONSERVATIVE ORDER
NO IT AIN'T GONNA FALL
CAUSE I BUILD COALITIONS
LIKE TRUMP BUILDS WALLS
The Concert of Europe
I'm conducting the show
Try to start a Revolution and
We’ll go toe to toe
You better step in line
Don't be tempted toward defiance
Because I'll crush you like a bug
With the Holy Alliance
Russia Prussia Austria
Stand together, you see
Against secularism
And democracy
Fighting nationalism
It’s a threat that’s pretty dire
Cause we need to hold together
Multi-ethnic empires
Warm Water is the label
That I represent
But I don't like
representative government
Greek Independence
No I couldn't stop that
Once the Romantic poets
Lent their pens to the task
In Central Europe I
Oversaw the formation
Of a 39 state German
Con-federation
Try to keep things stable
Diplomatic statecraft
Gotta keep a watchful eye
On the Burschenschaft
In 1848
I was under attack
I had to flee to England
But NOW LOOK WHO'S BACK!
Revolutionary punks
I’ma make your lives shorter
When you try to mess around
With my conservative order
SO JOIN ME IN VIENNA

The post-Napoleonic 1814 meeting of Europe's heads of state provides a case study of exploiting divisions among your opponents during any sort of negotiation.
Fredrik Stanton: The Congress of Vienna was sort of an all-star negotiating event. It was the first major get-together of all of the heads of Europe. At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Europe had been turned totally upside down by Napoleon. And the heads of Europe got together to redraw the borders. France, of course, had just been defeated and France's Foreign Minister was able to pull off one of the greatest negotiating upsets in history by using a division between the victorious allies to reinsert himself as a major player and secure France's stature on the world stage.
Often a weaker party can capitalize on divisions or differences of interest between the other counter parties. What the French Foreign Minister did, and something we can use and take advantage of in our everyday lives, is he saw that the other people across the table had different interests from each other. And when their division became apparent, he realized that he could throw his weight to one side or the other and tip the balance in their favor. That gave him tremendous leverage, which he used to his advantage.
Question: What lesson does this teach us about everyday negotiations?
Fredrik Stanton: if there's a division, and you see this in politics occasionally as well, the person who throws their weight and tips the balance gets a great deal of power. And even someone who starts out at a disadvantage can multiply their leverage that way.
Generally the last Congressman or Senator to sign onto a vote that's very close to passing is able to get all sorts of benefits and goodies out of it because his vote become the necessary vote to cross the line. You see that all the time.
Question: So does it make sense to hold out as long as possible during negotiations?
Fredrik Stanton: Some people think that you should. That the smart ploy is to wait until the very last moment, until they really need your vote before making your move. So, if that's your game, then sure.

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. ~ Ephesians 5:21
This passage applies to the body of believers in fellowship with one another, so it naturally applies to husbands and wives as well. However, just how husbands and wives are to submit to one another is easily misunderstood in our current culture.
That's what Dance With Me is all about -- learning what submission looks like in the 21st Century. In this workshop couples learn to pay attention to one another's needs and to be responsive to one another in light of his/her unique design and purpose.

The first historical reference to Warsaw dates back to the year 1313, when initially Kraków served as the Polish capital city. Due to its central location between the Commonwealth's capitals of Kraków and Vilnius, Warsaw became the capital of the Commonwealth and the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland when King Sigismund III Vasa moved his court from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, Warsaw was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars, the city became the official capital of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, a puppet state of the First French Empire created by Napoleon Bonaparte. With accordance to the decision of the Congress of Vienna, Warsaw in 1815 was annexed by the Russian Empire and became part of the "Congress Kingdom". Only in 1918 it regained independence from the foreign rule and emerged as a new capital of the independent Republic of Poland. Along with the German invasion in 1939, the massacre of the Jewish population and deportations to concentration camps led to the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto in 1943 and to a major and devastating Warsaw Uprising between August and October 1944. For this Warsaw gained the title of the "Phoenix City" because it has survived many wars, conflicts and invasions throughout its long history. Most notably, the city had to be painstakingly rebuilt after the extensive damage it suffered in World War II, during which 85% of its buildings were destroyed. On 9 November 1940, the city was awarded Poland's highest military decoration for heroism, the Virtuti Militari, during the Siege of Warsaw (1939). (wikipedia)

[dt.]
[en.] Vienna is the capital and at the same time a state of Austria. Many of the sights are in the 1st district -- the old town - and on the Ringstrasse, a broad boulevard that encloses this city district.
Our tour begins at the State Opera. The members of the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra are elected from of the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Their famous Vienna New Year's Concert, taking place January 1, is broadcasted worldwide from the house of the Viennese Music Association (Musikvereinshaus). Past the Hotel Sacher and the Albertina -the most renowned art museum of graphic arts - we reach the Heroes Square -Heldenplatz - with the equestrian statues of Prince Eugene and Archduke Charles.
In the inner yard of the Hofburg Palace you will find the statue of Emperor Franz I representing Emperor Augustus. The imperial crown cannot be overlooked.
The Swiss gateway leads into the oldest section of the castle - the Swiss Court. Here you should definitely visit the Treasury. Among other interesting objects, the Imperial Insignia of the Holy Roman Empire and the inalienable heirloom of the House of Habsburg are shown.
Through the Michaelertor -- St. Michael`s Gate - we leave the Hofburg Palace and touch the pedestrian precinct crowded by tourists and locals.
Today the Austrian Federal Chancellery is located in the Leopold Wing of the Hofburg Palace at the Ballhausplatz . In the opposite building, where the Congress of Vienna met once, are the offices of the Chancellor.
From the Imperial Court Theatre (Burgtheater), one of the most important German language theaters in the world, one arrives at the folks' park (Volksgarten) built in 1819 with the Theseustemple set up the 1819.
Across the trench (Graben), one of the most exclusive streets of the city, you reach the Stephansplatz. It was formerly the trench in front of the Roman fort, which became the ditch in front of the city wall in the Middle Ages. In one of the side streets you will find the Café Hawelka - Vienna's most famous artists' café.
The St. Stephen's Cathedral is the landmark of Vienna. The glass facade of the Haas house is in a lively architectural contrast to the St. Stephens cathedral.

ABOUT WARSAW:
Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa [varˈʂava] ( listen); see also other names), is the capital and largest city of Poland. It is located on the Vistula River, in east-central Poland, roughly 260 kilometres (160 mi) from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres (190 mi) from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population is estimated at 1.740 million residents within a greater metropolitan area of 2.666 million residents, which makes Warsaw the 9th most populous capital city in the European Union.[2][3][4] The city limits cover 516.9 square kilometres (199.6 sq mi), while the metropolitan area covers 6,100.43 square kilometres (2,355.39 sq mi).[5]
In 2012 Warsaw was ranked as the 32nd most liveable city in the world by the Economist Intelligence Unit.[6] It was also ranked as one of the most liveable cities in Central and Eastern Europe. Today Warsaw is considered an Alpha– global city, a major international tourist destination and a significant cultural, political and economic hub.[7][8][9] Warsaw's economy, by a wide variety of industries, is characterised by FMCG manufacturing, metal processing, steel and electronic manufacturing and food processing. The city is a significant centre of research and development, BPO, ITO, as well as Polish media industry. The Warsaw Stock Exchange is one of the largest and most important in Central Europe. Frontex, the European Union agency for external border security, is headquartered in Warsaw. Unusually for a European city, Warsaw has a prominent skyline with many skyscrapers and high-rise buildings in the city center. Warsaw is one of only a few cities in the European Union that have such a skyline, together with Frankfurt, London and Paris.
The first historical reference to Warsaw dates back to the year 1313, when initially Kraków served as the Polish capital city. Due to its central location between the Commonwealth's capitals of Kraków and Vilnius, Warsaw became the capital of the Commonwealth and the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland when King Sigismund III Vasa moved his court from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596.[10] After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, Warsaw was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia. The city is the seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese (left bank) and diocese (right bank of the Vistula), and possesses various universities, most notably the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Warsaw University, an opera house, theatres, museums, libraries and monuments. The historic city centre of Warsaw with its picturesque Old Town in 1980 was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other main architectural attractions include the Castle Square with the Royal Castle and the iconic King Sigismund's Column, St. John's Cathedral, Market Square, palaces, churches and mansions all displaying a richness of colour and architectural detail. Buildings are representatives of nearly every European architectural style and historical period. Warsaw has wonderful examples of architecture from the gothic, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical periods and around a quarter of the city is filled with grand parks and royal gardens.

Named for good sailing winds, Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and home to nearly a quarter of the country’s two million residents. Come for the stunning European architecture, and stay for delicious cuts of meat, the city’s zest for soccer, and, of course, the tango.
“The Paris of South America” boasts outstanding shopping and a friendly populace. A tour of Buenos Aires should cut through La Boca Harbor, where you’ll find numerous street vendors, restaurants, and street dancers willing to give you a spin. Wander down the streets to take in colorful artwork, and make a game out of asking the locals what neighborhood you should tour next. Here’s a hint: with so much to see, everyone will give you a different answer!
Some will tell you to visit San Telmo for souvenirs, patio shopping, and crumbling historical buildings. Others will suggest Puerto Madero, a refurbished shipping port that boasts a mixture of old-world glamour and modern buildings. What everyone will suggest, however, is a stop by Plaza de Mayo. There you can take in the rosy architecture of the Casa Rosada, which was made famous by Argentine First Lady Eva Peron and the musical about her life, “Evita.” Take a tour and learn about her life, from her humble beginnings to her rise to power.
Cap off your Buenos Aires sightseeing with an evening walk through Puerto Madero, where you can get a late dinner and dance until the next day arrives.

Travel video about destination Helsinki in Finland.
Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

(0:05) In today's rapidly changing urban environments, we rely on information more than ever to make sense of our journeys. But, what if all the information we need found its way to us before we knew we needed it? Cubic Transportation Systems, the world leading integrator of revenue management systems and services for the transportation industry, introduces its vision for the future of urban travel- NextCity, a vision for a fully integrated payments, information and decision management system that takes us further than we've ever been before.

NextCity allows operators to provide fare incentives, encouraging travelers to modify their journey choices. Special offers from commercial partners can help make journeys more enjoyable and productive. NextCity provides service updates that react to changes in travel information passing on alerts direct to Chris, making sure he gets to the office on time for his meeting.

By using the near-field communications technology in his smart phone, he can follow a quick, one-step registration process. Now he can pay for his travel using his mobile phone, stay up-to-date with relevant travel alerts and receive exclusive deals and a range of special offers.
(2:31) NextCity can also ensure multistage journeys run smoothly. Sarah receives notification of an incident on the road she normally uses. The intelligent system knows her regular journey choice and encourages her to take the fairy instead by sending a combined parking reservation and ferry ticket, both discounted, straight to her mobile device. NextCity systems allow flexible travel choices, switching between private and public modes of transport. Sarah's journey continues seamlessly, be it by car, train, bus or fairy.
(3:09) In today's fast moving world, Cubic's NextCity vision is at the cutting edge of travel technology and services. A single, integrated transport account opens up a range of information and incentives that increase the value and comfort of their routine travel. NextCity promises a fully integrated, intelligent, urban network, a data rich environment that affords transport operators and planning authorities the optimum resource for planning and utilization while benefiting from shared and reduced costs. The ability to relay information direct to travelers enables prompt and pertinent responses to unplanned disruption of services and facilitates management of demand through dynamic fair structures and other incentives, increasing passenger comfort and satisfaction while reducing congestion.
(4:05) The vision to harness evolving technology. The solutions to keep tomorrow on the move. NextCity- intelligent travel made real.

Presentation at the Audio Branding Congress in New York on November 17, 2011.
Abstract from Herwig Kusatz:
The Vienna Tourist Board developed in 2009/2010 a new destination brand for Vienna. To check the current touristy view about Vienna and the future direction of the destination brand Vienna over 10,000 persons from target markets (U.S., DE, USA, U.S., IT, FR, IT, RU,JP) and over 550 experts were interviewed in the branding development process. Furthermore, an image benchmarking was made with other cities.
The modern Vienna Sound Identity, composed of a Soundlogo and Soundscape for the Vienna Tourist Board, is a downtempo opera, which makes the sensuality, refinement, high class and timelessness of Vienna hearable. The acoustic elements are applied in the worldwide destination marketing of Vienna for all touchpoints for example in Events in Citys like London or Milan to televisions spots in CNN.

Hofburg Palace is a palace located in Vienna, Austria, that has housed some of the most powerful people in European and Austrian history, including the Habsburg dynasty, rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It currently serves as the official residence of the President of Austria. It was the Habsburgs' principal winter residence, as the Schönbrunn Palace was their preferred summer residence.
The Hofburg area has been the documented seat of government since 1279 for various empires and republics. The Hofburg has been expanded over the centuries to include various residences (with the Amalienburg), the Imperial Chapel (Hofkapelle or Burgkapelle), the Naturhistorisches Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Austrian National Library (Hofbibliothek), the Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer), the Burgtheater, the Spanish Riding School (Hofreitschule), the Imperial Horse Stables (Stallburg and Hofstallungen), and the Hofburg Congress Center.
The Hofburg faces the Heldenplatz ordered under the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, as part of what was to become a Kaiserforum that was never completed.
Numerous architects have executed work at the Hofburg as it expanded, notably the Italian architect-engineer Filiberto Luchese (the Leopoldischiner Trakt), Lodovico Burnacini and Martino and Domenico Carlone, the Baroque architects Lukas von Hildebrandt and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach (the Reichschancelry Wing and the Winter Riding School), Johann Fischer von Erlach (the library), and the architects of the grandiose Neue Burg built between 1881 and 1913.

Ljubljana, capitol of Slovenia, is unmistakably European, with a gentle whiff of a Mediterranean breeze.
This city at the foot of a citade,l was always a melting pot for cultural, economic, and political diversity.
It is an eagerly modern city, inching towards becoming a swank capital of the new Europe.
The city's medieval character has been slightly modified by the modern architecture. The transition to the new political system was fortuitously peaceful.
Named after the renowned Slovenian poet, the Preseren Square is still the lively pulsating heart and turning point in the historic part of town.
Architecturally and historically most significant structures are snuggled within a 2-kilometre radius of the Preseren Monument.
Simple public transportation provides for effortless accessibility. A slow train brings the sightseers comfortably to the castle hovering over the city. The ride includes crossing the centrally located Tromostovje -- a web of three bridges.
The caste dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. From here one has a wonderful view of the city and far beyond.
A great part of the city life takes place near the river. While strolling along the Lubljanica, soundlessly flowing through the city, one should take time and wander off into the ancient streets. Booksellers, cafés and relentless saunters animate the cityscape all year round.
Street musicians, often boasting a distinctly higher quality standard as those of other world capitals, and the open market, reflect the inhabitants' cultural agility and a sense for the mercantile.
Come nightfall and Ljubljana reveals its Mediterranean charm: street cafes, restaurants and bars are always brimming with life. The din from the thronged promenades resounds through out the city.
A carefree finale of a day in Ljubljana. Tomorrow one can continue to explore this elegant city.

Tradition is the enjoyment of timeless beauty.
"Sound of Vienna's" range of services is as wide-ranging and varied as the city whose name graces the name of our concert and artiste agency.
Founded in 1999 by Josip Susnjara as a concert and artiste agency, "Sound of Vienna" has taken on the task of carrying the fame of Viennese music out into the wide world. In addition to over 400 classical concerts in Vienna each year, countless tours of Europe, Asia and the USA emphasise the outstanding artistic quality of "Sound of Vienna".
"Sound of Vienna" -- the concert agency
The focal point of the work of "Sound of Vienna" is undoubtedly the Strauss & Mozart concerts by the Salonorchester Alt Wien, which take place daily in the Kursalon Wien. In this exquisite palace in Vienna's City Park, where the famous golden Strauss statue is also located, the Strauss brothers had their greatest successes. The regular concert evenings in the Kursalon Wien are a cultural must for all those who have lost their hearts to the music of Vienna, and more especially to the music of Johann Strauss and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. With over 400 events per year, "Sound of Vienna" has not only great experience in the provision of artistes, but in addition has excellent contacts with Viennese and Austrian artistes. "Sound of Vienna" is thus the best address for all who are seeking suitable acts for their own events. Beyond the boundaries of any one particular genre, we supply classical ensembles of all sizes, light music of every style, as well as the full diversity of variety acts such as magicians, clowns, fire-eaters, etc.
Johann Strauss - the Waltz King
Johann Strauss (Son) was born on 25 October 1825 in Vienna. With his compostions in light classical style, he put everything comparable in the shade. In the year 1844 he made his sensationally successful debut in Dommayers Casino in Hietzing with his own small orchestra. An unprecedented triumphal progress began that led him, together with his brothers Joseph and Eduard, to the Kursalon Wien, among other locations. Wide-ranging concert tours throughout Europe, and the 1872 American concert series, triggered off a real "Strauss hysteria". His popularity was unsurpassed.
Besides waltzes, Strauss also applied himself to the composition of other dance forms, such as polkas, galops, marches and csárdás. Through his contact with Jacques Offenbach he discovered operetta, which he himself called "comic opera". With works like "Die Fledermaus" and "The Gypsy Baron" he brought the golden era of Viennese operetta to its pinnacle. Johann Strauss Jnr died on 3 June 1899 in Vienna.
Viennese waltzes
The origins of the waltz reach back to the Middle Ages. Although initially considered coarse and too folksy, from the Congress of Vienna (1814/15) onwards it spread around the world and captivated all levels of society. From 1800, Vienna became the centre for the waltz. In the course of the 19th Century, the waltz developed into a concert form in its own right, fashioned by the Grand Masters of the waltz: Josef Lanner, Johann Strauss Senior and his sons Joseph and Eduard. But when one speaks of the "Viennese Waltz", then without a doubt the waltz compositions of Johann Strauss Jnr spring to mind, representing as they do a pinnacle in the development of the form. The classical concert waltz begins with an introduction, which is followed by a series usually of five waltz melodies, and ends with the coda, which brings a reprise of the preceding melodies. The ¾ time of the waltz gains its characteristic Viennese swing through the slight, intuitive anticipation of the second beat. Undoubtedly the most famous of the Viennese waltzes is Johann Strauss Jnr's "The Blue Danube", opus 314, which has practically become Austria's secret national anthem.
